Boxer campaign breaks law, tries to recruit students through teachers – UPDATED

Posted by: Phineas on October 27, 2010 at 6:26 pm

Ooops. The campaign of Senator Ma’am Boxer has been caught with both hands in the cookie jar on this one. According to the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, Boxer’s campaign (let’s not forget she is Chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee) sent a letter (PDF) to LA Unified School District teachers, asking them to recruit their students to help out with Boxer’s campaign. One problem: this breaks the California Education Code. As Michael Higby at Mayor Sam’s Sister City explains:

This is a big violation of the California Education Code which states:

California Education Code, section 51520: “During school hours, and within one hour before the time of opening and within one hour after the time of closing of school, pupils of the public school shall not be solicited on school premises by teachers or others to subscribe or contribute to the funds of, to become members of, or to work for, any organization not directly under the control of the school authorities, unless the organization is a nonpartisan, charitable organization organized for charitable purposes by an act of Congress or under the laws of the state, the purpose of the solicitation is nonpartisan and charitable, and the solicitation has been approved by the county board of education or by the governing board of the school district in which the school is located.

You can see the letter the HJTA sent to the Superintendent of Schools for LAUSD here (PDF)

Naughty, naughty, Senator Ethics! And, gee, just what would your allies in the teacher’s unions expect in return for facilitating this illegal campaign donation in kind educational experience for LA’s school kids?

And how desperate is Babs when she has to beg for illegal help? Not enough volunteers? Internal polls looking bad? If Fiorina can split the ring around metro Los Angeles, Boxer loses and will have to go back to that million-dollar house in Cokeland Oakland she failed to declare.

PS. Did you know the Chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee was one of the leading figures in the House Banking Scandal?

PPS. Vote Carly.

UPDATE: Even while saying they weren’t really doing what the letter shows they were doing, the Boxer campaign has apologized… for not doing anything. Okay…

Well, Phineas, who are we to deny such an educational experience for our school children. (I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.)

How much press is this getting in the Golden State? And does Ethics mean anything to anyone anymore–especially those watchdogs of the MSM (again, I gag) I think they expect their elected officials to get pork to their district by hook or by crook.

  2. Great White Rat says:

Silly move. Boxer should do what Patty Murray’s doing in Washington state – sign up illegal aliens to do their canvassing and help out with the campaign. After all, there’s no shortage of illegal aliens in CA.

I guess that’s another case of illegals doing the jobs Americans won’t do….

Seriously, the LA Times and the SF Chronicle are almost total Democratic house organs. (Oddly, the Chron has a wee bit more integrity, but not much.) This might play in a small regional or something as big as the Orange County paper, but… nah.

The only way this would get major coverage is if Fiorina’s campaign had done it. Then it would be THE. GREATEST. OUTRAGE. EVER!!!

  4. Frank says:

    Can anyone say “FAKE”?

This is supposed to be a faxed or scaned copy of the letter from the Boxer Campaign to LA Teachers.

Just a quick scan of the “letter” reveals several problems.

    1. No distortion in letters that appear over what look like folds and wrinkles in the “paper”.

    2. Distorted lines in the email addresses for the Boxer staff listed at the bottom of the letter.

    3. Totally indistinguishable logo on letterhead looks like it came through on a VERY old fax machine that can’t produce grayscale images. I doubt that the Boxer Campaign or the LA teachers union (or HJTA for that matter) would be using such an old machine.

You can delete this post again but I will keep posting it. You have every right to whatever conspiracy theory you want to spin but don’t resort to forgery to generate controversy. Produce an original copy of the letter (or at least one that doesn’t look like an obvious fake).

  5. Phineas says:

You may want to check the update. If it’s a fake letter, why is the Boxer campaign apologizing?

BTW, the only comment of yours I deleted was a duplicate under a different user name, but with the same email and IP. They were in moderation, which you perhaps mistook for deletion.

  6. Steve Hussein Skubinna says:

Thanks for setting us straight, Frank. We need clear headed citizens such as yourself to put us hateful racist RethugliKKKans in our place.

Now you better get back to your misspelled and racist “tea party” sign you’re gonna be waving in front of the cameras – that union bus isn’t going to wait forever, you know.

  7. PE says:

Miss Barbara is a Senator for the people of California. She knows what’s good for her subjects.

  8. Carlos says:

PE, the only reason she “knows” what’s best for her subjects is Duh-1 and his circle of light has told her.

Left to her own devices, Babs is the kind of intellectual giant who would light a match to see if any gas were still in the tank. That’s why she’s on a leash from the admin.

  9. Michael Sweeney says:

    – What we’re looking at here is a 3rd or 4th Generation Copy – No, Howard Jarvis and SisterToldjah weren’t on the original “Distribution List” Some Teacher who was on the “Distribution List” probably (there are Teachers who aren’t Socialists) Faxed (most Teachers still don’t have access to modern computers and email accounts in the classroom) the letter she received (Via Fax – see above) to someone associated with the Howard Jarvis Association, who made that copy of a copy into a pdf…
    – Obviously, the Boxer Campaign knows someone high up in the Campaign did this, and that the Campaign shouldn’t have done this, or they wouldn’t have apologized.

  10. Michael Sweeney says:

    Sister Toldjah:
I’ve seen those ads saying how “cruel” and “mean” Carly Fiorina was to close the over-regulated, overtaxed H.P. plants in California and to reopen them in China & India…
    – Why Nothing about the Regulatory & Tax Climate that gave H.P. (& Carly Fiorina) the choice between closing the plants in California and having H.P. go into Chapter 7 (and losing over 110,000 American jobs?
    – Why nothing about the 15,000 farmers who lost their farms after the environmentalist friends of Senator Boxer shut off the Water to the Central Valley? Why nothing about the farmers who lost everything, including those who committed suicide because it was just too much for them???
    – Why nothing about the 250,000 Farm Workers who lost their jobs as a direct result of the policies Boxer & friends put into place? and why nothing about the fact that Boxer & friends couldn’t care less about them and their jobs? or the H.P. employees she’s using now??
    – Why doesn’t Carly put a face on that disaster and show that Boxer is the one who is self-serving who will do anything and use anyone to get elected??

  11. Brontefan says:

I have not seen anyone except Sean Hannity make a big deal about the farm workers who lost their jobs when they shut off the water. It seems to be a pattern that Dems can break the law without regard to consequences—look at Dodd, Frank, & Waters. Mrs. Obama at the polls. Al Franken’s election. ACORN . . .need I list more?
