In some ways this is starting to feel like Iran just before the fall of the Shah.

As a side note, I would disagree with Ledeen’s assertion that South Africa is a democracy. Like many African countries it holds periodic elections, but is basically a one-party state so the elections are largely meaningless. A corrupt oligarchy increasingly runs things there.

Either we believe that freedom – including the freedom to do really stupid, self-defeating things like voting in the Obamacrats or the Muslim Brotherhood – is a natural right, given to all men, or we betray our own dear-bought freedom.

Looking over the commentary in the rightosphere concerning Egypt, we seem to have more Tories than actual believers in freedom.

My goodness, how great it is to be ruled by elitist, intelligencia arrogancia that have the entire world figured out. Now, if those dang fools upsetting the apple cart (or camel dung cart, as the case may be) in Egypt would just follow the script written out by the really great world leaders, everything would be just fine…

Is Obama up to the task facing him with this crisis in Egypt ? Obama will not be able to soothe the seething Arab masses unless he kowtows to them. The Arabs don’t want democracy. How do I know this to be true ? Read the Koran.

Thank you, Walter! It is not that the situation doesn’t matter to us; it is a situation we can do–should do–nothing until the dust settles. As for the Obama administration and all the damage to our country–we can blame the MSM for some of that! They failed to vet him, failed to ask any relevant questions, etc. and then viciously attacked one woman and her family. Sometimes we have to go to the edge of the cliff and maybe hang over before we get it. I keep praying he’s a one-time Prez. He certainly has done nothing for world respect.

Ever notice how the left has little problem with anti-American dictators but are fully against those that cooperate with us?
The same left that urged moderation and negotiation with Iraq, Iran and Cuba condemn the US for cooperating with Egypt.

Consider the fact that Mubarick has been greatly influential for keeping the peace in his region of the world…by that standard alone we should be standing by him. If the left is so focused on peace, etc, they should consider the alternative for Arabic countries. They should proceed cautiously before they say the great outpouring of dissatisfaction in the Arab street is not coming from the “average” person, but if they delve deeply in the public’s action they may find it is spurred on by imams and Islamic leaders who have a very focused agenda of establishing Sharia law and a worldwide campaign to do the same in non-Arabic countries.

So what will it be…peace for the sake of keeping things balanced in the Middle East or a tipping point of a more secular semi-democratic government into a Islamic orthodoxy based government?

I have a friend who is married to an Egyptian businessman. They have two children and he is a Muslim; however, since he was raised in Egypt, lived in Italy (where they met) and came to the U. S. with a business enterprise, he is has allowed both his children to take the spiritual path they choose. I guess you could say he has been Americanized….and of course his wife has influence over this. His wife has full autonomy and they enjoy a happy marriage. I believe most of his extended family still live in Egypt and I have a feeling they are the ones who will end up leaving Egypt if such a radical change takes place. I pray for their safety. I pray that there will be a way to reconciled the demands of the Egyptian public and their leaders.
