Eleanor Holmes Norton is the non-voting Delegate to the House of Representatives for the District of Columbia. Even though she cannot vote, she serves as Washington’s representative. She is also a dyed-in-the-wool progressive Democrat and a fan of spending. So, when the Republicans propose to eliminate the use of all government funds for abortion in the District, she gets a wee bit upset:
The Democratic non-voting representative for the District of Columbia told MyFoxDC.com that Congress should go “straight to hell” for trying to meddle in D.C. affairs.
Norton was referring to a provision in the stopgap budget bill House Republicans are pushing that would ban federal and local taxpayer dollars in the District of Columbia from being used to pay for abortions.
“We are absolutely outraged. This is the functional equivalent of bombing innocent civilians,” she said, according to MyFoxDC.com. “It’s time that the District of Columbia told the Congress to go straight to hell.”
Gotta love that “new tone,” eh?
Let’s set aside the laughable and fatuous hyperbole required to compare a budgetary decision to what Qaddafi has been doing in Libya. That’s par for the Democrats’ course. When it comes to “meddling in D.C. affairs,” however, Holmes needs to review the history of the district she represents. Article I, section 8 of the Constitution reads, in part:
To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings;
Said district was created by the Residence Act of 1790, based on the cession of lands by Maryland and Virginia. The Government of the district was established by the Organic Act of 1801 and amended in the Organic Act of 1871. Both these acts (the latter of which is still in force, I believe) were enacted by Congress in pursuance of their powers under the Constitution. Far from meddling where they don’t belong, they have a specific charge under our most basic law to involve themselves in D.C. affairs, including the manner in which local money is spent.
Before she next decides to blow off steam, perhaps Delegate Norton should take the time to review the proper role of the chamber in which she serves — which includes supervising D.C., not funding abortion — and the law regarding the district she supposedly represents.
Unless, of course, she likes making herself look foolish and ignorant.

ST adds (5:04 PM): And to top it all off, Senator Durbin is blasting the GOP on the issue of the vote on the abortion ban cutting off access to health care – in spite of the fact that he himself (along with numerous other Dems, including Obama) voted the same way numerous times in the past (via Amanda Carpenter).
What a bunch of flaming hypocrites!

I’m skeptical that the Constitution even allows a non-voting delegate. True, the position has been tolerated since 1871, but I think it’s time that the House abrogated that practice.
Preach it, Phineas!
Gawd, I love Dick Durbin. Kind of the way I love a rock stuck in my shoe.
Good analogy, Ms. Norton. The prevention of killing unborn babies HAS to be an awful lot like bombing innocent civilians.
Huh?
Isn’t there at least some irony in her talk… she says not killing babies is like bombing the civilians… Hmph. So killing babies is dropping flowers and singing Kum By Yah?
I just don’t understand how they can twist themselves into such a knot with their justification of having taxpayers fund the killing of babies. Yet they are against the death penalty and war. I guess its cause those babies are just so evil… or maybe they are afraid they’ll grow to be conservatives.
The babies aren’t evil, Old Goat, they’re just terribly inconvenient, and Lord knows one can’t be inconvenienced in today’s world.
And as for justification of half of what the guvmint steals from producers to spend as only they can determine: “I want it! Therefore it’s mine! Gimme! And if you vote for me, I’ll give you more so you’ll vote for me more often!”
Justification for murdering babies isn’t needed, pretty much for the same reason.
My question to Ms. Holmes….if you are so unhappy why don’t you just move out of DC where supposedly anyone can get an abortion funded by the federal government with some restrictions?
The progressive have always linked abortion to women’s health which is a farce. Abortion on demand is not a health issue.
Funny you said that, Kate. Kathleen Turner just spoke out on GMA about how terrible it is that the Republican Party is holding “women’s health care” hostage.
Pitiful…
those at the gov trough and their “handlers” only pontificate, agitate, whine, complain, wallow in frenzied-feeding… with so many vacuous words, intentions, and accomplishments, there is no need for them to consider the coherence of their words, the moral implications of their ideology, or the real-world effect of their actions: you are clearly a hate-mongering stumbling block on their journey to the “big rock candy mountain”
if some of the above is so, no rational discussion, persuasive argument, even civil disagreement is possible with those of this ilk
sorry
Civil discourse only happens when the left is screaming obscenities or threatening or actually committing bodily harm.
It’s only when conservatives have the temerity to gently question any ideological Lilliputian idiocy that discord becomes racist, raucous and threatening, or when some leftist attacks and kills some 15-minute leftist icon until the LSM discovers the attacker was a leftist instead of a conservative.
It is my firm belief that there should be NO permanent housing located within the boundries of Washington DC. This woman shouldn’t even have a voice in Congress, as she should not be representing anyone. – Lorica
