Red-Meat Monday: the truth about the Democratic Party and civil rights

I’ve written before about the dirty history of the Democratic Party when it comes to race and civil rights (1), a history that’s largely been swept under the rug as the Party pretends to have always been a virtuous fighter for civil rights and the welcoming home for African-American voters.

Below is a video from Frantz Kebreau, via Flopping Aces, that juxtaposes great moments in the history of the Democrats and civil rights with images of Democratic supporters.

The irony is so thick, you can cut it with a knife:

Like I said, red meat. One can quibble (2), but the basic facts are right; if we’re to be honest about our history and if American Blacks are ever to free themselves from being played for suckers into giving their votes en bloc to just one party –a party that is not serving their interests– then these facts need to be much more widely known.

PS: I haven’t read Kebreau’s book, Stolen History, so I can’t recommend or comment on it. However I do highly recommend Bruce Bartlett’s “Wrong on Race: the Democratic Party’s Buried Past.” Copiously footnoted and deeply researched in both primary sources and academic journals, it should be the standard one-volume reference on the topic. I reviewed it in 2008.

(1) My apologies to proud average-American Democrats reading this, but it’s the truth and it’s been hidden from you, too.
(2) One can argue that the large blocs in Congress opposing civil rights legislation were “less Democrat” than they were Southern, the legacy of both the region’s history with slavery and the place where Jim Crow originated and was most strongly in force. (Though Jim Crow was not limited to the South, to be sure.) This line of argument also would point out that they were Democratic politicians because of the Civil War, in which a Republican administration first crushed the Confederacy and then imposed the hated Reconstruction. And that would be a fair observation. BUT… it is also fair to note that Northern and Western Democrats continually allied with racist Southern Democrats to win national elections and get legislation passed, each giving the other what it wanted. Which means there is no way around it: the Democratic Party as a whole owns that dirty history.

Sure. Just like the United States owns its dirty history. But the United States and the Democratic Party repudiated that history. The Democratic Party was split by the Civil Rights Movement, with southern whites migrating to the Republican Party.

So tell us all, Zachriel, if dem po’-lovin’ Democraps have been so gooooood to da po’ black folk, how comes not one, no, not one, war on poverty program conceived and pushed through Democrap Congresses have done one thing to help any but the white-collar whites administering the programs and race-baiters like Jackson and Sharpton? And virtually destroyed entire inner city communities? And the crime and out-of-wedlock childbirth rates have skyrocketed since Kennedy’s death? And abortions in minority communities continue to skyrocket (couldn’t have anything to do with racist Sanger’s belief in ridding the country of “the negro race” now, could it?)

I, for one, am really interested in seeing how you justify the trillions mispent on programs that were specifically designed to keep blacks on the modern-day plantation, specifically spurring their fears with tales of getting “cut off” from Uncle Sugar’s largesse if they even thought about voting other than Democrap.

Democraps and progressives: liars, thieves, and not-so-useful idiots whose minds have been so mushed by ideological indoctrination to the point they are absolutely useless.

Carlos: if dem po’-lovin’ Democraps have been so gooooood to da po’ black folk,

Peppering your comment with racist caricatures doesn’t help make your point, nor does a multitude of strawmen make for a stronger argument than just one. Leaving that aside, any reasonable theory of politics has to account for overwhelming black support for the Democratic Party.

  4. Carlos says:

    1) You have no idea whether I am a person of color or not, and by liberal/Democrap standards, if I am a person of color I have every right to use racial stereotypes and overtones. Just because you misread the purpose of the use of those doesn’t make them harmful, unless you simply consider how you personally want to react to them. (BTW, I got exactly the racist reaction from you intended.)

    2) So we are back to “the overwhelming consensus” theory of what is true, are we? Just like AGW “consensus”? Talk about straw men!

    3) Theory has absolutely nothing to do with reality, sir, and no matter what the political theory for wasting trillions of dollars, the social reality is that all the results mentioned in my original comment are true.

Currently, this has not always been true. – Lorica

Carlos: So we are back to “the overwhelming consensus” theory of what is true, are we?

There is no doubt that African Americans have overwhelmingly voted Democratic over the last fifty years.

Lorica: this has not always been true.

That’s true. In the antebellum period, African Americans nearly always voted Republican. But in the twentieth century, Northern blacks started a migration to the Democratic Party, as it was perceived as being more aligned with workers and their concerns. When Barry Goldwater repudiated the Civil Rights Act, virtually the entire African American community threw their support to the Democratic Party. Even conservative blacks were alienated from the Republican Party.

Yeah Zach I am well aware, didn’t really need the history lesson, but thanks anyway.

The problem the Dem party is having now is that they have used the Black American vote as a tool to get their crazy ideas passed. Which are currently killing Black families and Black youth. Even this African American President seems to be just a tool to the crazy agenda of the extreme left in this country. His support of these ideas of the left has done nothing to help Black families or the majority of working people in this country. They have only helped the extreme left hold power over We the People.

Black Conservatives are being taken more and more seriously, and are being given a seat at the table, unlike what is going on in the Dem party. This is shown by the diffences of how Herman Cain is being treated. The extreme left in this country treats the man like he is a traitor. Yet he owes his support not to some idealized foolish thought of “the 1st black President”, or is he half black, I get so confused by the racist determinations. He owes his support to being a thoughtful intelligent man, who does have a history that is open for all to see. A history that shows he has been productive to our society in general not just a select few. I will proudly vote for this man, who I hope and pray will be truly our 1st Black American President. – Lorica
