Tales of the Nanny State: Bloomberg commands breastfeeding!

Call me crazy, but isn’t the choice whether to breastfeed one’s baby one the mother should make, perhaps in consultation with her doctor?

Not when Mayor Mike is in charge!

The nanny state is going after moms.

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

“If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”

Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.

Lovely. So not only will Mike Bloomberg and his merry band of statists play hide-the-bottle to force one to breastfeed, but those who don’t get with the program will be nagged until they do — “We know what’s best for your baby. You don’t. Why do you insist on a bottle? WHY DO YOU HATE YOUR BABY??”

That’s the essence of liberal fascism, of the nanny-state, of arrogant would-be Czars like Mike Bloomberg: there is no limit, no point at which they say they control enough. Every minute aspect of your life –how much salt you use, how much soda you drink, how you feed your baby– is subject to the state’s direction.

Every. Single. Bit.

Why do leftwingwackos act like such boobs? Oh wait, they’re not acting :)

  2. Bill says:

Just like most government workers, he just loves sucking on teats.

  3. Lorica says:

What happened to “It’s my body”?? So they can mandate breastfeeding, but not have a law against late term abortions?? These Stalinists will do anything to hold power over the American people. Please someone kick this puke out of our party. – Lorica

    The Commissar knows best.

  5. “Wisdom abides in the mind of a man of understanding, but it is not known in the heart of fools.” Proverbs 14:33

It is incomprehensible that with all the problems associated with governing a city the size of New York, Bloomberg could find time to entertain such idiocy.

  6. The Watcher says:

And the moment they breastfeed in public, they’ll be cited for indecent exposure.

  7. TexasMom2012 says:

This really pisses me off. At least 4 generations of my family have NOT been able to breast feed our kids and this jackwad wants to discriminate and lecture me or anyone who CHOOSES not to breast feed? This man needs to be committed or move to some island so he can be the grand poobah dictator there! He can go to hell. I am sure that he would not allow this same treatment for pregnant women. It is their body then! But apparently, it is no longer my body if I make the choice to have a child rather than abort that child ? How does a man like Bloomberg live with the cognitive disorder of his own mind? I bet he is against the death penalty as well. I know he thinks it is perfectly okay for him to be protected round the clock with armed security but doesn’t believe that I should be able to even own a weapon for my protection in mine own home. Idiot! And, I am sorry, you New York City idiots who voted for this guy… Have gotten what yall choose BUT Please don’t export your nuttiness to Texas! Sorry, this guy just hits my PMS button every time! Rant off.

  8. Esteve says:

I bet the mayor loved the opening ceremony in London.

  9. GerryMaine says:

Can Bloomberg get any more outrageously idiotic?

    I’m guessing YES!

  10. the message of this country’s founding fathers was if you don’t want to live in a tyranny don’t have a government powerful enough to tyrannize you. this fool is setting the american people up to be tyrannized. he thinks he should have this power because he sees himself as a good guy. well what happens to the american people if the next guy is not a good guy?

  11. Roxeanne de Luca says:

If a conservative man did this, every “feminist” in the country would be screaming about how he doesn’t understand what she’s gone through, how women are best able to make their own decisions regarding their bodies, how it’s condescending and patronising to have a talking-to about this. But he’s liberal, so he gets away with it.

NYC has one of the highest abortion rates in the country. How about realising that a kid is better off being bottle-fed than aborted? Common sense? Bueller?

  12. grandforker says:

After my wife gave birth to our first child, she very much wanted to breast feed the baby, but it just didn’t work for whatever reason. My wife was very troubled by this. Most of the nurses were quite sympathetic and assured her that it was fine to bottle feed.

However, some of the nurses were “true believers” in breast feeding. They tormented my wife and (I will use this word) tortured her until she bled. Those breast-feeding Nazis put her under great mental and physical stress, inflicting pain on her to prove their point. To this day, I am stunned that my lovely wife was treated this way by healthcare “professionals.”

When we were asked to evaluate our experience at the hospital, we let them know how we felt about the breast-feeding zealots. We never received an apology or any explanation. All I know is that when our second child was born at the same hospital, we did not encounter the same type of treatment. My wife was so negative about her first breast feeding experience that she didn’t even make an attempt with our second child.

In any event, both my children have grown into happy, healthy, well-adjusted adults, even though neither was breast fed. It’s the epitome of hypocrisy for the same people who claim that a woman has the “right to choose” to abort her unborn child has no right to choose whether she breast feeds a child.

  13. Carlos says:

Back in the day libs were soooo worried about the government being in their bedrooms, telling them how they could and couldn’t have sex, and with whom.

So, what’s the difference here, Mikey? Is it OK to tell people how to do things as a result of uncensored sex, but not OK to tell them how and with whom to have sex?

And Lorica (#3) has it exactly right with “Whatever happened to ‘It’s my body’?”

  14. Steph says:

OMG, this just “chaps my hide”!!:o This liberal wacko has just gone too far. The other comments are right on – they can abort babies but must breast feed if they decide not to kill it? What?? I don’t understand why the citizens of New York put up with this lunatic. Yeah, and what happened to “our bodies”? Not ALL women can breast feed for whatever reason, whether it be physical or emotional or ? Who is this man to tell new mothers what they should or should not do? I would hope that NY women would storm city hall but they won’t. They are all sheeple in NY apparently. I am just furious.

  15. Tibby says:

    I am LIVID!!
Who does this moron think he is?!? He obviously hasn’t got a clue about mothers and what they go through to breast feed their children. It isn’t the piece of cake that the majority of men think it is. It’s hard and painful for a huge amount of mothers. And it is one of the first “I’ve failed my child” intros for many of us. I propose that HE try it. Idiot.

  16. Born Free says:

The biggest boobs are the voters of NYC. Be glad you aren’t one.

  17. Tom TB says:

What’s the first answer that comes to mind when we have over reaching government? Term limits, right? THIS GUY SHOULDN’T STILL BE MAYOR! We end up with a spineless city council who won’t agree with themselves of years previous. If we wanted an Island with a dictator, we would go to Cuba!

  18. darla says:

Please someone, find Bloomberg’s cojones and then give them a swift kick. Then make his significant other sudk them. This guy is cretin and needs to be tarred and feathered and run out of NYC on a rail. Fast!!!!!

  19. Caroline says:

This is what happens when you are a bored Billionaire whose flunkies do all the work and he takes all the credit.
By the way, who is PAYING for this program?
