Churchill on Islam

One of my favorite books is Winston Churchill’s “The River War,” about the Anglo-Egyptian campaign in Sudan in the 1890s. Among its many memorable passages is Churchill’s meditation the nature of Islam. Recent events make me think it’s worth dusting off:

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries!  Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy.  The effects are apparent in many countries.  Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.  A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity.  The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property—either as a child, a wife, or a concubine—must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.  Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities.  Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die.  But the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it.  No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.  Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proseltyzing faith.  It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science—the science against which it had vainly struggled—the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.

Some on reading that will scream “racism” (1) and “Islamophobia.” Whatever. Looking over the events of not just the past few days, but the last 20 years, I can’t help but wonder if instead the future prime minister wasn’t sharp-eyed and wise.

Thanks to Steven Hayward for the reminder.

Footnote:
(1) Even though Islam isn’t a race, but a religion. But it’s a bit much to expect intellectual clarity from the Left; the facts are against them, so all they have left is invective.

  1. The statement “thousands become brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen” is referenced in “Revolt In The Desert” (1925) by T.E. Lawrence. Though the British were successful in using the Arabs to push the Turks (who had aligned with Germany) off the Arabian peninsula during WWI, Lawrence made these same observations but also outlined the cultural difficulties and obstacles keeping Muslim society from being able to advance beyond about a 4th Century mindset and existence. The same impediments are being confronted by US troops in the region today.

Maybe that is why Obama sent the bust back.

    Spot on observation.

EBL — You beat me to it!

  4. Carlos says:

I wonder why they are known as “progressives” when their mindset is so similar to that of Islam, which would take the world back 1-1/2 millenia?

And that’s that’s exactly where the mindset of social order for both Islamists and progressives is, where each little tyrant had his own little kingdom and was fearful of every neighbor because they might take their power, or possessions (including women) or Heaven forbid, their pitiful little existences.

That’s why a century after “the Prophet” the “scholars” decided they’d better give their followers a reason to die for the “cause,” so they came up with a reward of 72 regenerating virgins.

The reward, of course, places women first as unlikely to want to gain such a reward, and also emphasizes the lower status of women in such a stratified society.

So tell me, some feminazi out there: Why is it you fear Republicans but would welcome sharia?

  5. BBHunter says:

    - Hitler accually had an Islamic regiment in North Africa that faught alongside Rommel.

    – Just like WMD’s, and Obama’s desasterous admintration and its mistakes, those Nazi Islamists are invisible to Progressives.

  6. Sefton says:

George Washington had a quote of his own in the years our young country was having to pay tribute to the Barbary Powers due to our lack of any Navy to protect American commerce from the Muslim pirates in the Mediterranean:

“Would to Heaven we had a navy able to reform those enemies to mankind – or crush them into non-existence.”

It later ended up being our first official war as an established nation, because Thomas Jefferson basically told the Muslim pirates to go ___ themselves:

“If we wish our commerce to be free and uninsulted, we must let these nations see that we have an energy [willingness to use force] which at present they disbelieve. The low opinion they entertain of our powers cannot fail to involve us soon in a naval war.”

So we built a navy, sent U.S. Marines to the shores of Tripoli, and kicked ass.

  7. Carlos says:

And had we continued to just sit back and take that crap from the 17th-century Islamists known as pirates, we’d still be paying homage to them.

Kinda like our Apologizer-in-Chief does now.

Remember this, that to a muslim it isn’t stealing if a muslim takes it from anyone not a muslim, and to some, to anyone not a muslim of the same stripe.

Maybe that explains Obhammud’s lack of understanding why people get upset about his theft of people’s hard-earned money for “redistribution,” since his early education was in muslim schools?

Nah. He’s just a common run-of-the-mill marxist thief.

  8. Anna D says:

Maybe we need to stop calling Islam a religion and start calling it what it is – a political and economic ideology bent on global domination?

  9. Dr. Koya says:

I resent Churchill’s use of Mohammedanism instead of Islam – shows man’s lack of education and prejudice against Islam.

The Muslims and Islam as ha been seen in the last century and in the more recent times, are not the true reflection of what the Quran teaches or the Prophet Islam taught.

Quran says, ” Do not create disorder on earth.”

In the Wars that Churchill launched have had to fight, did not create any disorder on the earth. Answer is massive. So he should not be pointing fingers socially, economically and politically disadvantaged Muslims of Africa in Churchill’s time.

With the fall of Islamic powers and degeneration or digression of Muslims from the pristine message of Islam much like their Christian and Jewish brethren – what befall the Muslims when Churchill had the misfortune to see and make his snappy comments about Islam and those disadvantaged Muslims is really pathetic.

The rise and fall of Islamic values and its political powers was clearly predicted and Muslims warned to avoid failure to be cognizant of it was going to cost Muslims heavily and for centuries before they would see a return of the glorious days not by unjust wars that Churchill brought upon the world and the massive damages that he is responsible for. He not hero when compared to the Holy Prophet of Islam who never did any mass killing by bombs and firepower that Churchill possessed and used like a maniac. In all the wars that the Prophet of Islam fought (in defense) during his life time barely 1000 or 2000 people killed. At the prime of his power when Prophet Mohammed returns to Mecca (his home town that he had to flee due to persecution) he had an army of 10000 followers. Not a single person was killed when reentering Mecca.

And Bible had quite rightly predicted this return that Churchill must have a thousand times before he died – ” He shall mach with 10000 saints with words in his left and fairy law in his right.” This does not fit Churchill but precisely fits the Prophet of Islam for Bible say “he shall rise from Mount Paran, from the region of Arabia…”

Churchill’s comments are a poor reflection of both his own Bible and wider knowledge of Islam.

The 20TH Century is the timeline for the reemergence of the glory of Islam but not through the wars like Churchill as Christian wages and which the many misguided Muslims think may be the way but through “power of peace” that world has not seen. The power of pen and not the firepower that the all nations including the misguided Muslim nations like Pakistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia aspire and many misguided Muslims may believe.

The new world order will be established through divine intervention in of two ways (1) either accept the God given wisdom that we the members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community share with to drop all notion of all kinds of warfare (2) or face the consequence of the divine intervention that will sudden, bewildering and far more devastating that Tsunami that Indonesia faced.

  10. foxmuldar says:

Sefton, apparently our Muslim in Chief isn’t familiar with that war. Obama’s version is of Jefferson inviting the Muslim to the White House for an Iftar dinner. just one of many Obama lies.

  11. Sefton says:

Fox – We initially tried diplomacy with the Barbary Powers.
In 1784, Congress authorized American diplomats John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson to negotiate with the Muslim terrorists. Negotiations proceeded, and in 1786, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson candidly asked the Ambassador from Tripoli the motivation behind their unprovoked attacks against Americans. What was the response?

The Ambassador answered us that it was founded on the laws of their Prophet [Mohammed] – that it was written in their Koran that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners; that is was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners; and that every Musselman [Muslim] who should be slain in battle was sure to go to paradise.

In the end, we obliged by sending a lot of them “to paradise”.

@Carlos – your first comment is spot on!

    @Steph: And my second one (#7) wasn’t?

Just kidding. Thank you for the compliment.
