Survey says! Police oppose new #guncontrol regulations

Pretty significant, I’d say, since the cops have to deal regularly with violent criminals and the aftermath of violent crime. If a majority of them say new gun regulations won’t do any good and might do harm, then why pass them? (1)

An authoritative new poll of more than 15,000 cops released on the eve of this week’s Senate anti-gun debate shows that a sweeping majority of officers don’t believe gun control will work or keep them safer, and nearly nine in 10 believe having more armed citizens would curb gun violence.

According to the lengthy survey of law enforcement professionals, one of the largest ever of street cops, 85 percent believe that President Obama’s gun control plan to ban assault weapons, limit the size of ammo magazines and expand background checks won’t improve their safety, with just over 10 percent believing it will have a “positive effect.”

The poll from PoliceOne.com, a site dedicated to police policy and news, also found surprising support for arming citizens. The poll found that 86 percent of officers believe that casualties would be decreased if armed citizens were present at the onset of a shooting. Another 81 percent backed arming teachers, as the National Rifle Association has called for.

I’m willing to bet this doesn’t include LAPD Chief Charlie Beck

Read the rest for more intriguing results, including broad support for police organizations that have stated they will refuse to enforce new gun control legislation.

PS: This morning a “compromise” bill featuring increased background checks, sponsored by Senators Manchin (D-WV) and Toomey (R-PA) is being introduced. I’m withholding final judgement until more details are known, but my gut feeling is that this is a bill that will fail to prevent more mass shootings, but will further burden our Second and Fourth Amendment rights. In other words, a bill written to be seen to be “doing something, anything.” Very disappointed in Senator Toomey, if this is the case.

  1. Sing it Sister!

The President likes to place police officers as a backdrop while speaking on his gun control proposals. But the poll clearly shows by an overwhelming margin police disagree with Obama on the issue.

A poll shows a good many of those stage prop cops did not wish to be standing behind Obhammud while he made his inane remarks.

Former Secret Service agent Bongino nails it. This is not gun control for safety’s sake but people control for tyranny’s sake. It is called “inserting the thin end of the wedge first” or “being lulled into a false sense of security”.

Google the Columbine massacre from the early ’90s and notice the rhetoric and objectives then are almost verbatim today’s. Read also the Secret Service’s after-action report, especially the two items that detail how most shooting incidents are stopped by “other than law enforcement means” and “are usually over by the time law enforcement arrives”. Studies overwhelmingly show the vast majority of firefights are over in seconds.

The survey basically showed what has been “common knowledge” for years – MANY years. A survey in Canada of RCMP non-administration serving officers showed the same – just before the disastrous (and beyond-comedy-gold expensive) registry was passed there.

This survey has been criticised, perhaps rightly, for methodology but nonetheless is in line with my own (limited) experience. LEOs want enforceable laws and support against criminals, not jailing Grampa for teaching a 12–year-old how to shoot a turkey for dinner.

  4. Carlos says:

Aww, the sweet siren song of “common sense” is such music to the ears of the low-information voter incapable of forming his/her own thoughts. They’re gonna “common sense” us into the registry that will allow unimpeded confiscation, and then all the feel-gooders will wonder how that could have possibly happened because they promised it wouldn’t.

    ‘Nuff said.

  5. Tom TB says:

Take a survey of convicted home invaders. They fear the armed citizen FAR more than law enforcement officers. The career criminal always knows the cops play by the rules, and sends them back to their jail home with their homies. The ARMED CITIZEN might not!

What need to be banned are liberal mamby pamby judges that give out slaps on the wrists instead of real time!!!!…….
