The demagoguery officially begins. Courtesy of the Rev. Jesse Jackson. In an opinion piece titled “Bush nominee slaps Parks’ legacy”:
There are those who will honor her now in the morning while working to overturn her legacy in the afternoon. President Bush honored her and then nominated Samuel Alito, a states’ rights, strict-constructionist throwback to a bygone age, to the Supreme Court. Alito is a “favorite” of the conservative right wing in the nation that has stood on the opposite side of history from Rosa Parks. His legal foundation is clearly adverse to civil rights, women’s right to self-determination and labor. He has even earned himself the nickname “Scalito,” after Justice Antonin Scalia, the court’s most radical reactionary.
Watch for plenty more of this type of scare-tactic nonsense from so-called ‘black leaders’ in the coming weeks, and see how their loyalists in the DNC will fall in line right along with them.
More: Captain Ed notes another attempt at smearing Alito - and it appears this one came directly from the DNC. Sigh.
On the other hand, the NYT has a fair write-up on Alito this morning. (Hat tip: James Joyner)
Update: Read more here about CBS correspondent John Roberts who asked if Alito was “sloppy seconds” at a press briefing with WH Press Secretary Scott McClellan:
Roberts asked the following question: “So, Scott, you said that — or the President said, repeatedly, that Harriet Miers was the best person for the job. So does that mean that Alito is sloppy seconds, or what?”
Sloppy seconds is a slang term for having sexual intercourse with someone immediately following another person.
Roberts later apologized. Whatever. (Hat tip: Drew)
Update II: Ian at The Political Teen has a video segment of Chris Matthews discussing the DNC smear memo. Read the smear memo here.

Did you hear Roberts’ follow-up question?

Regarding Jesse Jackson, what is wrong with states rights, strict constitution constructionist? The Constitution is the law of the land. Anyone, including Jesse that thinks otherwise is missing the point of our system of government and the source of our freedom, even Jesse’s freedom to say stupid things.

“More: Captain Ed notes another attempt at smearing Alito - and it appears this one came directly from the DNC. Sigh.”
Whats the smear? One can’t discuss his competence as a prosecutor? I would think that would be highly relevant. I suppose to a partisan, anything negative is a smear. And this failure is a blot on his record.
““So, Scott, you said that — or the President said, repeatedly, that Harriet Miers was the best person for the job. So does that mean that Alito is sloppy seconds, or what?””
A sloppy way to ask a good question.

Although the question of how Alito did in one criminal case may have some relevance, it is typical of the tone the Democrats take. Just go after the result, but not what led to it. A simple smear.
Gee, a whole blot on his record! Wowee! Perhaps Elliot Spitzer/Spritzer/whatever has a perfect prosecutorial record, but I doubt many competent prosecutors do. How many times did The Teflon Don go to trial before finally being convicted? Does that mean all previous attempts were blots? Hardly.
Typical of the Left. Too, too typical.
