Here’s a must-read piece from today’s American Thinker that essentially asks what if we fought WWII in 2005?

Yeah. I like this line, “An average of 215 American soldiers and sailors are dying every day in a war we shouldn’t have let ourselves get into.

10 days of WW2 was more losses than we’ve seen in 2 years of Iraqi Freedom.

What I want to know is…. why did we fight Hitler if it was Japan that bombed us?

We declared war on Japan on december 8, 1941; we did not declare war on Germany. The Axis agreement called on Germany, Italy and Japan to come to each other’s aid if they were attacked; since Japan attacked us, Germany and Italy were not obligated to declare war on the United States, but, despite that, Germany declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941.

President Roosevelt adopted a “Germany first” policy, because he knew that Germany could win without help from Japan, but the reverse was not true. And if Germany had been just a little more successful in its Russian campaigns in 1941 and 1942, the Nazis might well have won.

In a lot of ways, Hitler sealed Germany’s doom by declaring war on the United States: had he not done so, and the US not been at war with Germany, the pressure would have been to put all of our war materiÃ©l into the Pacific theater, thus ending the Lend-Lease supplies to the USSR, perhaps allowing Germany to win on the Eastern front.

With the current crop of Democrats, I could see Howard Dean, etc. calling on the US to surrender to Japan as it would only be fair. I wonder if we the people still have enough independent spirit to take such defeatists out back and shoot them?

I have long wondered why Hitler did declare war on us. He had more than enough enemies already on his plate. To be sure, he had a treaty of alliance with Japan, but he never kept any other treaty promise that would be against his own interests.

The best explanation that I have seen is that he had a copy of Roosevelt’s supreme-top-secret strategic plans. He “knew” that the USA would soon be declaring war on him, and he wanted the world to know
that he, and not Roosevelt, was the supreme source of world-shaking decisions like war or peace. So he acted before Roosevelt could.

The sweet part of this story is that those supreme-top-secret plans were faked. US Military Intelligence made an accurate guess on how Hitler would react, and they supplied one of his spies with a phony document. Roosevelt knew, and approved, because he saw the danger of the USA being committed to a war in the Pacific while the Nazis completed their conquest of Europe. Roosevelt also knew that there was no way he would be able to get a declaration of war against Germany through the US Congress unless Germany attacked us, or issued their declaration first.

In 1941 the looney right was saying “Roosevelt knew about the Pearl Harbor attack in advance. He gave no warning because he wanted an outrage to justify a war with Japan.” If the spy story about the top-secret plans is correct, Roosevelt was indeed setting up a war with the Axis; but his chosen enemy was Germany, not Japan.

As far as I am concerned, the looney right was as wrong then as the looney left is now. Roosevelt loved the fleet and would never have betrayed 2000 of its sailors and the entire Pacific line of battle to their destruction.

As for the spy story: I have also read that the manuscript for Mein Kampf, part II, has been found and authenticated, and that it describes Hitler’s long-term plans for war with the USA. The book was never published until quite recently because Hitler realized that it would stir up more trouble than he could handle. So perhaps the spy story is false, and Hitler just wanted war.

But since Hitler betrayed every other treaty he ever signed, that spy story certainly is plausible.
