Is it him?

A US airstrike may have taken out Al Qaeda’s number two Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri. This will be HUGE, if confirmed:

Jan. 13, 2006 — Today, according to Pakistani military sources, U.S. aircraft attacked a compound known to be frequented by high-level al Qaeda operatives. Pakistani officials tell ABC News that al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s top lieutenant, may have been among them.

U.S. intelligence for the last few days indicated that Zawahiri might have been in the location or about to arrive, although there is still no confirmation from U.S. officials that he was among the victims.

The attack took place early this morning Pakistan time in a small village a few miles from the border with Afghanistan.

Villagers described seeing an unmanned plane circling the area for the last few days and then bombs falling in the early morning darkness.

Eighteen people were killed, according to the villagers who said women and children were among the fatalities.

But Pakistani officials tell ABC News that five of those killed were high-level al Qaeda figures, and their bodies are now undergoing forensic tests for positive identification.

Officials say Zawahiri was known to have used safe houses in this area last winter and was believed to be in the area again this winter.

Zawahiri, who appeared just last week in a new videotaped message, had increasingly been taking the operational reins of al Qaeda, and is thought by U.S. officials to be the current true mastermind of the terrorist group.

Here’s more on Ayman al-Zawahiri.

The Counterterrorism Blog has a link this morning to an AP story that quotes two senior Pakistani officials as saying AQ’s number two guy was not at the site.

Stay tuned.

    Hi, SisterToldjah \:d/

I guess Al Queida doesn’t teach its slimy, swarthy little minions even the basics of Security and Survival.

NEVER use an important location twice.

    Gotta love Hellfire equipped Predators!

I have my fingers crossed on this one. If Zawarhiri and a small cadre are dismembered and dead… Good!

If not, another “sanctuary” has been erased.

    Jack.

Fox News is reporting a miss. :((

  3. Rob says:

Unfortunately, he wasn’t there. Even worse, it may turn into a PR nightmare.

  4. - Hopefully at some point the people in the area will just flee when the Jihadist thugs come around looking for sanctuary… The tatic of hiding amoung civilians and in Mosques is a time honored retreat for the cowards they all are.

    - Bang

The libs are making a lot of noise about civilian casualties. Those are unfortunate, of course, but come nowhere close the the many slaughtered by Hussein & Co. That little detail they’ve naturally (conveniently?) “forgotten”… :-?

  6. Pam says:

What alarmed me was that the “civilians” said it was a miss before any government offical did.

If they don’t want to be hurt, they should stay away from terrorists. Hell, even we know this. It’s basic. Like, you don’t stand in front of the man shooting at the police from behind you. You go elswhere.

Same with these civilians. Be a host to terrorists, take a chance of being blown up. It ain’t rocket surgery.

    Yhoo News Story

In it has McCain saying, “We apologize, but I can’t tell you that we wouldn’t do the same thing again” and “We have to do what we think is necessary to take out al-Qaida, particularly the top operatives. This guy has been more visible than Osama bin Laden lately

Trent Lott said, “My information is that this strike was clearly justified by the intelligence“. I’m sure leftist leaders will claim that Bush manufactured and manipulated the intelligence rather than recognizing the intelligence was faulty again.

Yahoo news reported, “Islamic groups staged demonstrations across Pakistan on Sunday to denounce the attack. A protest in Karachi drew 10,000 people, and chants of “Death to America” were heard. Is any group saying Death to Pakisatan or death to Iran or Death to Iraq? No. If they were they would be called out for their hate speech.

No, the Left will say that this kind of bombing is very imprudent. Your reputation suffers when you kill 7 women and 6 children and your target is in the next country over. Just because we “think” something is true does not make it so and the population in the world will eventually stop giving you a bye. Violence is always counter-productive, always. Peace
