ABC cancels “Commander In Chief” show

Posted by: Sister Toldjah on January 31, 2006 at 10:53 am

Perhaps America wasn’t interested in being prepped for a Hillary run after all?

(Hat tip: Rightwinged.com, who you should bookmark – good stuff there all the time)

Update 2/27/06: See the comments section for an update to this story – apparently the show has been put on “hiatus” with the last four episodes in the season expected to air in April. What I’ve read from a Google search tonight is that there is a worry from CIC fans that the show will indeed be cancelled and they are encouraging viewers to write ABC to show support.

Smartest thing the Dems could do is put Hillary on the ballot. Would clench a Rep. Victory in ‘08. :)

  2. ArizonaTeach says:

I’m actually a little surprised by this…not because I ever watched the show or anything, but about how much the MSM rallied behind it and crowned it with glory when it scored huge ratings when it debuted.

Oh well. Like I said, I never watched it, so really can’t and won’t comment on its merits.

    Pikachu.

  3. Do you realize that with this and the cancellation of the West Wing (while having horrid politics was one of the best-written shows on television) there will be no TV presidency? Had there only been a show called “Second-In-Command” or “The Speaker” to constitutionally take the vacancy left by these shows.

Unfortunately, I fear a military coup by “E-Ring” Indeed, these are dark days for TV democracy.

  4. blogagog says:

Wow, that was unexpected I have not seen it, but I thought it was a popular show. It just won some award like a week ago!

  5. Lorica says:

I was thinking just the other day that after the initial curiosity of this show, that ratings should drop pretty fast. YAY!!!!! I couldn’t be happier it is gone. I agree with Sis, American’s aren’t ready for a Hillary run. Now Condi, that is a whole other story. =)) – Lorica

Hello SisterToldjah, blogagog, Teach and Mohrgan::)

Jeeeeez… Wasn’t that show a BIG winner at the Golden Globes two weeks ago? :-"

Chalk up another last minute “Turd In A Punchbowl” Award for Steven Bochco.

First was “Bay City Blues”. Followed by “Beverly Hills Buntz”, “Cop Rock” and most recently; “Over There” and “Commander And Chief”. \:d/

I’ll stick with “NCIS” because Abbie ROCKS!:d

    Jack.

  7. PCD says:

Don’t expect any good shows to come out of Hollywood for years to come. My daughter sent me some stuff from the USC Film School. It was all crap based on the liberal memes we fend off here constantly. None of it had any connection to reality.

  8. ArizonaTeach says:

Hey, Jack, let’s not diss the Cop Rock, ok? That show was totally Airwolf.

  9. andrew says:

“None of it had any connection to reality.”

Truly a dark age when fiction is not real.

  10. PCD says:

andrew, you know how big a Edited. –ST you make yourself look when you authoritatiely comment on something you know nothing about? Now, where in what I said did I say that the scripts were supposed to depict fiction?

  11. andrew says:

” Now, where in what I said did I say that the scripts were supposed to depict fiction?”

Isn’t that what hollywood makes? Or maybe you were talking about documentaries. Thats the kind of ’shows’ you bring up in a discussion about the cancelling of ‘commander in chief.’

  12. PCD says:

andrew, since you have a comprehension problem, let me ’splain it to you.

The USC School of Cinema and Television is the farm team for Hollywood writers, actors, producers, and other back of the camera talent.

    Got that?

Now, the scripts I saw was from the school, not Hollywood, but these kids are the people moving into Hollywood as they graduate and find jobs.

Are you beginning to get it andrew?

  13. Jack Deth says:

    Hi, andrew and PCD:

The big three film schools are, according to Roger Corman; the undisputed King of Low Budget cinema:

NYU~ Where Corman discovered Coppola and Scorcese. First as Film Editors and later, Location Diectors.

USC~ Where Corman latched onto Ron Howard
after his Thesis Film. Howard agreed to star in “Grand Theft Auto” at no cost to Corman. If Ron could also direct two films. The deal was sealed with a handshake.

UCLA~ Where Corman found George Lucas and advised the gaduate to transfer his Thesis Film (”THX-1138″) from 16 to 35mm. Add twenty minutes more from what was cut and dropped on the Editing Room Floor and release the film as a first effort.

The talent to make films is in those schools, but the mindset of the students is much different than the 1970s.

Especially when a no-talent Socialist hack like Michael Moore can make millions with reveisonist dreck like “Bowling For Columbine” and “Farenheit 9/11″.

How well will the new talent fare with an extremely discriminationg audience? :-"

We’ll just have to wait and see.

    Jack.

  14. andrew says:

“Are you beginning to get it andrew?”

Are the scripts you saw of fiction, or not?

  15. Severian says:

THX 1138, the best film Lucas ever made.

And Roger Corman, OMG! I love his low budget films, he’s the man for dreck! I remember MST3000 making a comment during one of his stinkers “If a tree falls in the forest, does that make a Corman film go over budget?” :d

  16. Jack Deth says:

What’s so cool about Corman, is that his degree was in Engineering. Not film, Severian.

Which, I think allows Roger to have a better eye and understanding of Budget over Product.

Corman was recently a guest of IFC’s (Independent Film Channel) “Dinner For Five”. Opposite host, Jon Favreau, Faizon Love, Bruce Campbell and Rob Zombie.

A superb, Emmy Nomianted half-hour. Both Favreau and Campbell asked excellent questions, and Campbell would have taken notes if he could!

Corman was explaining a fixed budget opposite return when it comes to sequels.

Using his hands to depict both. As the sequel number progressed the distance between the two closed more and more.

With the pitch was made for a sixth sequel, Corman looked at the shrinking closure and stated:

“We’ve had a good run. There will be NO Canasaur 6!”

    Jack.

  17. Dennis Viau says:

FYI: ‘Commander In Chief’ has not been cancelled. ABC is just pulling it from its schedule for the month of March (it’ll be on in Feb. and then return in the Spring). No official decision has been made if the show will be renewed, or not, for next season.

  18. PCD says:

    andrew, you don’t get it.

  19. Severian says:

Jack, I missed that show, will have to watch for a repeat, but I’ve seen Corman speak before on various shows, and he’s on the ball, and it makes sense he wasn’t a film student, he has a completely different approach than most. He made a bunch of stinkers, but he has kept making movies and money, so he has to know something. One of his latest films, “Frankenstein Unbound” I think, was actually pretty good and had some fairly big name stars in it (Raul Julia, Briget Fonda, etc.).

People say he makes stinkers, so, what’s the rest of Hollyweird’s excuse? I haven’t seen so many idiotic remakes and sequels in all my life.

  20. Jack Deth says:

    Hi, Severian:

Corman made an excellent point during “Dinner For Five”. That of his hundreds of films he directed or produced, those with original ideas made money.

Also that of his many, many films, about 80% made money for him or his studio.

Granted, a lot of his films go straight to DVD and cable, but money is saved by not throwing it at ads, trailers and commercials.

Corman also let it be known that today’s method of Media Blitz and Hype for an up-coming film to sink or swim during it’s “Big Weekend” is ridiculously self-destructive.

    Jack. \:d/

  21. andrew says:

    “andrew, you don’t get it.”

I talked about fiction. And then you told me that I didn’t know what I was talking about. Was it fiction or not? Its a simple question.

  22. Bettye says:

95% of these comments were from a female dominant household, cause the male neanderthals have no more sense than to sit around and try to scratch the balls castrated by a female.

  23. Jeremy says:

I’m ambivalent about this show, but I’m wondering, why is this post even still up? ABC has not indicated one way or another about Commander in Chief for next year – it is *not* yet cancelled or slated for renewal.

  24. I, like about 99.9% of the blogosphere, don’t take posts down just because I find out later that the some of the information posted from links in them might have been incomplete or inaccurate. Corrections are usually made if/when information is provided to clarify/correct the error(s) (sidenote: I should point out that corrections *aren’t* made due to mere disagreement with someone else who may think they are correct). I see someone beat you to the punch on this earlier in the thread and I missed it. Thank you (and the other person) for the update.

  25. JohnHolliday says:

I only watched the first episode because it’s like I tell my kids when we have a new vegetable for dinner; you have to try it at least once.

So I watched. I now call the show “Commander of Cheese” because it’s CHEESY! Donald Sutherland so overplayed the “typical hollywood-style” conservative that I could almost hear the bad German accent. I expected him to rub his hands together and say, “Next, ve vill take over za vorld! Muhwa-ha-ha-ha!”

I watch House on FOX. It’s a show about an obnoxious doctor, not an obnoxious show about the most unlikely of political situations.

  26. me again says:

The top execs of this show had too many ties to the Clintons. One of them was Hilary’s social secretary/:).

    The show got so much hoopla I tried to watch it and it was painfulb-(. She was a girl growing up in a man’s world, her husband sexually harassed an intern, and she constantly fights conservatives… wait! Am I talking about Hillary or Geena? hmm. Maybe Geena is Hillary in disguise playing Hillary in real life so Hillary in real life can later play Geena in real life and then Geena can be the actress? Huh! Wait!… Now I’m confused!@-) Are there two Hillaries or two Geenas? Somebody make the spinning stop!8-}

Do you think the series on DVD will be out in time of the 2 hour made-for-television movie;))? I think it’ll make it’s DVD debut in the Wal*mart discount been, then later be used for coasters l-).
