Interesting poll results on the Iraq war from a recent Public Opinion Strategies Poll, via James Joyner:

  • 57% believe “The Iraq War is a key part of the global war on terrorism.”
  • 57% “support finishing the job in Iraq, that is, keeping the troops there until the Iraqi government can maintain control and provide security for its people.
  • 50% want our troops should stay and “do whatever it takes to restore order until the Iraqis can govern and provide security to their country” while only 17% favor immediate withdrawal
  • 56% believe “Even if they have concerns about his war policies, Americans should stand behind the President in Iraq because we are at war.”
  • 53% believe “The Democrats are going too far, too fast in pressing the President to withdraw the troops from Iraq.”

Now, I know war policy shouldn’t be decided based on polls, but since we’ve got any number of Defeatocrats playing politics with the war, I wonder if seeing these numbers would change their minds?1

  1. Yes, that was rhetorical. I don’t realllly wonder about that. [back]

  1. [...] I guess we can’t expect the mindless drones of the Left to focus on more than one topic at a time. It just illustrates the fact that the Democrats think they can win the Presidential election in 2008 by focusing all of their energy on the war in Iraq. they think that their anti-war campaign is what won them the majority (despite the fact that the polls tell a different story - see Sister Toldya, Captain’s Quarters). 1. ST,

There is consensus that there is Iraq warming civil war and that the top retired Generals (not in the theater) all think Bush has failed in his execution of the war. Bush, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz all micromanaged the war horribly and should be put to Nuremberg trials for their crimes against humanity.

This ONE polls does not represent the overwhelming majority of experts who all agree that there is a consensus that we should cut and run re-deploy.

Additionally, Bush manipulated the intelligence and lied to get us into war (I give Kerry, Gore, Clinton, Albright a pass even though they said the same things because they were not commander in chief and would’ve used only cruise missiles to annoy Saddam and make him madder at us for the next few decades).

Your credentials as blogger should be pulled because you are a denier….

OK. I tried some lame humor… Don’t ban me even though it’s pretty bad… Not even a knee slapper.. But I’m going to hit the “Say It” button anyway.

  2. I have one question though…..

Why is this being called a ’surge’ and what it should be…Re-enforcements?

Besides, wouldn’t this be easier to put through if people knew these troops are going to help re-enforce the troops already there?

I have been in the military and this is the first time I have ever heard a troop deployment to help existing troops be called a ’surge.’

  3. I will let the article speak for itself, only to say one thing, I have never heard of Republicans going to a Democrats house and assaulting them for their beliefs.

A Fredericksburg man was arrested Saturday on charges he assaulted three strangers at their home during a dispute over politics, police said.

According to a Fredericksburg police report, the suspect went to a home in the 900 block of Marye Street about 5:30 p.m. after finding one of the resident’s name on a Republican Web site.

The resident and his two roommates engaged in a discussion with the suspect, though none of them had ever met or had contact with him before.

The argument got heated and the suspect learned that the young residents had not enlisted in the military and “put their all” behind the Republican-led war effort in Iraq, police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said.

The suspect refused to leave the home after repeatedly being asked to do so, police said. The three roommates were hit multiple times each as they attempted to get the suspect out of the door, authorities said.

The suspect continued to be aggressive and disorderly even after a city police officer arrived, the report states.

Andrew Stone, 23, was charged with three counts of assault and battery. A magistrate released Stone on his own recognizance and he was ordered to have no further contact with the victims.

It was not clear in the report what political agenda Stone was supporting.

I bet I can guess what political agenda he supports….

  4. :((:((:(( You know I always find it amusing when people who never served day one in the military call us on the left Defeatocrats. Now ST is a nice lady so I won’t berate her but I’ll be honest I truly regret that I dropped out of college because if I didn’t maybe I would’ve gotten a job with the secret service and then I would be able to throw Bush 43 the blanket party he richly deserves.

  7. Media lovefest with themselves denouncing the ‘hateful’ blogosphere….

Tony Snow and White House Reporters Slam The ‘Hateful,’ ‘Polarized’ Blogosphere

In a press roundtable at the National Press Club tonight, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow led a discussion with White House correspondents about the impact of the internet on their respective jobs. Their conclusion? They don’t like being challenged by blogs.

Read the rest and watch the C-Span video HERE

And I’m sorry if this doesn’t seem right, but I am soooo sick of seeing David Gregory’s face, he just seems so ’smarmy’ that it’s sickening.

Just remember, it’s the BLOGS that are the problem…

    The most laughable quote:

Newsweek’s White House correspondent Richard Wolffe added, “[Bloggers] want us to play a role that isn’t really our role. Our role is to ask questions and get information.

Which goes well with Gregory’s coments:

“I think politics and political coverage has become so polarized in this country…because it’s the internet and the blogs that have really used this White House press conferences to somehow support positions out in America, political views. And they will clip and digitize portions of these briefings to fit into their particular argument.”

Which is exactly what the media does….

“[Bloggers] want us to play a role that isn’t really our role. Our role is to ask questions and get information.

[then] clip and digitize portions of these briefings to fit into their OUR particular [BIASED] argument.”

Sometimes you just have to read between the lines in what they are saying…..

  8. I notice that the majority of those polled were in the older demographic, which sort of confirms my suspicion that those people polled are people who are bored, eat their dinner early, do not have caller id and/or mobile phones, and are rather set in their ways. I.e., these are the sorts of people who tune in at 7:00 eastern during the football season “expecting to see 60 Minutes, which will be seen in its entirety at the end of this football game, except for those on the west coast, where it will be seen at its regular time.”

But at least we can see the way the poll was conducted and the questions that were asked. Clearly, it’s professionally done.

    Whatever.

Well, I served 6 years in the Navy and I think that ALL americans should be able to use the term Defeatocrats. Don’t take it personal. Let it go. If you don’t want defeat, then talk about solutions for victory (which you don’t).

Tommy wrote, “I would be able to throw Bush 43 the blanket party he richly deserves.

In boot camp we didn’t give blanket parties to guys who we disagreed with. Disagreeement is a natural part of life and should always be allowed. Defeatocrats have a hard time (after having a monopoly on the news for a few decades) with hearing things they disagree with - they lurch towards calling things “illegal” or people “incompetent”. Leftists are not served well with this harsh language and lack of perspective.

Tommy incompetently wrote, “Well ST not only are they chickenhawks the 43 Admin is just not compent.

Gotta love the irony in that statement… Do you get the joke tommy? :d

You should realize by now tommy - my message has been consistent to you - that you really need to focus on your own actions and words (as that is the only thing you can control) and improve them. We can all stand improving ourselves but the amount of really harsh judgments you heap onto people with lack of perspective and false accusations really doesn’t help your side.

While I would agree that Bush isn’t perfect, I’d hardly call his actions “illegal” or “incompetent” except for in the communications department. He is not a good communicator. Additionally, as a centrist conservative I disagree with him 50% of the time as he is too left of center. We need a president and Congress that is at least centrist and maybe even a little right of center for a decade or two as this government has grown every year for over 6 decades. It is OUT of CONTROL. Beaurocracies are on autopilot and growing and creating needs for their existence.

  11. Yes Leslie, older voters usually vote. The poll clearly says “Likely Voters” in the 1st paragraph. Younger people usually don’t make the time to vote, but they want to be heard. Which I usually take as they want to make a noise about this or about that, but they don’t want to commit. I believed the MSM when they said the “Deaniacs” were going to usher in a new age for voters. Well if that was actually true, then the 2004 Dem nomination should have been Dean, but was Kerry. Seems to me the young folks let poor old Dean down. Of course the week before the Iowa Caucus Dean shot himself in the foot by yelling at an older gentleman about how George Bush was not his neighbor. Why would you not address the more philosophical nature of what the gentleman was saying?? Cuz a good Dem Candidate doesn’t get bogged down in the details, it is about trying to get the best sound bite. Dean shot himself in the foot with older folks, and they come out to vote most often. - Lorica
