John Kerry was on C-Span yesterday and laid this line of horse-hooey on viewers:

Sen. John Kerry said during a C-SPAN appearance that fears of a bloodbath after the US withdrawal from Vietnam never materialized. He says he’s met survivors of the “reeducation camps” who are thriving in modern Vietnam. An award-winning investigation by the Orange County Register concludes that at least 165,000 people perished in the camps.

As one of the comments says at Don Surber’s site, is Kerry really that stupid, or does he think that WE’RE really that stupid?

Just check out Wikipedia’s description of the aftermath:

Hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese officials, particularly ARVN officers, were imprisoned in reeducation camps after the Communist takeover. Tens of thousands died and many fled the country after being released. Up to two million civilians left the country, and as many as half of these boat people perished at sea.

(snip)

After repeated border clashes in 1978, Vietnam invaded Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia) and ousted the Khmer Rouge. As many as two million died during the Khmer Rouge genocide.

Emphasis, mine.

So you can clearly see that millions died as a direct result of our leaving Vietnam the way we did. And that’s just what we know about.

So again, is John Kerry really that dumb? Or does he take us for a bunch of boobs? My guess? A lot of both.

The reason why Kerry wants you to believe that when we left Vietnam, it “wasn’t that bad” is so they can force the notion on the American people that we can leave Iraq and it, like Vietnam, won’t be “that bad.” Nice try at rewriting history, Senator but, like your pal Webb the other day, you fail.

Exactly, Brian. The lives of thousands or even millions of Iraqis mean nothing to your average leftist. Nor does keeping your word to people who trust you and depend on you.

When the jihadists read Kerry’s comments, I’ll bet they’ll be just salivating over the number of heads they can chop off if he gets his way. Of course, if and when that happens, it won’t bother Kerry. I’m convinced that to be a leftist, you need your conscience surgically removed.

  3. The Wikipedia entry about the killing fields brings to mind the last note from Cambodian prime minister Sirik Matak to the US Ambassador in April 1975. This was in response to an offer to escape the country and suffer through the impending holocaust:

    ‘Dear Excellency and Friend:

‘I thank you very sincerely for your letter and for your offer to transport me towards freedom. I cannot, alas, leave in such a cowardly fashion. As for you, and in particular for your great country, I never believed for a moment that you would have this sentiment of abandoning a people which has chosen liberty. You have refused us your protection, and we can do nothing about it.

‘You leave, and my wish is that you and your country will find happiness under this sky. But, mark it well, that if I shall die here on the spot and in my country that I love, it is no matter, because we are all born and must die. I have only committed this mistake of believing in you [the Americans].

‘Please accept, Excellency and dear friend, my faithful and friendly sentiments.’

    (emphasis mine - GWR)

Sirik Matak would be executed by the Khmer Rouge two weeks later, along with the remaining members of the Lon Nol government.

The last words of Sirik Matak should be on the minds of every Iraqi right now, because Kerry and the rest of the leftists have learned nothing from them. They intend to repeat this disgrace if they get the power. Lorica’s right - God help us if they ever regain the White House - but more than that, God help those people who proudly held up purple fingers some months ago.

  4. Excellent post, and a great point, GWR.

The left fails to realize that the damage done to our credibility is going to be huge, just as it was in the wake of Vietnam. Our friends and allies will say “sure, you SAY you will help us…but your past shows us otherwise.”

Or maybe they don’t fail to realize it…maybe they just don’t care.

  5. GWR, few could have written your comment any better and to the point —- well done!

Some one needs to ask Kerry if he believes Auswitch was also a re-education camp. Re-writing history seems to be the norm for many of these baffoons who think they can say anything and it is accepted as gospel.

It was also interesting that the question was posed by a democrat (on the democrat line) and the lady was expressing sincere concern for the fate of the Iraqi people.

  6. I don’t think it is just about Viet Nam. I am 55 and I remember John Kerry back in the day. I remember him debating O’Neil on Dick Cavett {I think it was Cavett} years ago. He said then that a few people might die in retribution if we left Viet Nam, but most would be fine, in fact most would be better off. So I think this is about Kerry and his personal history as much as it is about Iraq. He can not admit he was wrong.

  7. Be glad that the following scenario did not take place: Kerry meeting with Jews from German “reeducation camps” and saying that while there might be a few bruised feelings Europe will be better off under the leadership of that Austrian corporal.

Perhaps I should loan him my copy of this book.

Nah - Kerry will probably think that it is a neocon plot and refuse to open it.

  8. Thanks for the compliment, Rovin. :)

Your point is also very well taken. For the leftists, there are no outrages that cannot be excused - as long as they are committed by America’s enemies. That’s why Kerry could never admit that ‘re-education camps’ are concentration camps - it would mean putting the communists in the same league as the Nazis.
