Brownback To Call It Quits?

(I’m filling in for ST the next few days. You can read more of my work at my blog, Liberty Pundit.)

Oh, please-please-please-please-PUH-LEASE let this be true:

Republican Sam Brownback will drop out of the 2008 presidential campaign on Friday, people close to the Kansas senator said Thursday.

Trouble raising money was a main reason for his decision, said one person close to Brownback, who requested anonymity because the candidate had not yet announced his plans.

Brownback, a lesser-known conservative contender, is expected announce his withdrawal in Topeka, Kan.

The senator is widely expected to seek the Kansas governor’s office in 2010, when his term β€” his second β€” expires. He had promised in his first Senate campaign to serve no more than two terms.

Personally, I don’t care if he runs for city dog catcher, I just want him out of the race. As the article notes, his support of a path to citizenship, i.e., amnesty, cost him dearly in my home state of Iowa (which, as the article also notes, is struggling under the crushing weight of the illegal immigrant flood).

I like his views on other social issues, don’t get me wrong, but his stance on illegal immigration was the deal-breaker for me. Until he opened his mouth on that issue, I was leaning towards him slightly.
