The Packers at the Cowboys

Posted by: Sister Toldjah on November 29, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Green Bay PackersDallas CowboysI have no dog in this fight, but I know several ST readers and commenters who have been looking forward to this battle between the two 10-1 teams – so use this as an open thread for your comments on the game. And remember, no “unsportsmanlike conduct” allowed ;)

Gametime is 8pm (or is it 8:15?), and it will be broadcast on the NFL Network. Note: Scroll down to read update 3 for how you can listen to the game on the radio.

Update I: I figured I’d give this thread a “football stadium feel” with this song, which we’ve all heard a time or two at various sports events :D

Update II: Here’s an interesting article regarding the NFL Network and its refusal to broadcast on cable:

The NFL Network owns the rights to broadcast next Thursday night’s game. It’s a channel currently unavailable to cable customers.

“We’ve gotten quite a few phone calls today; people wanting that NFL channel, which is only available on satellite, either through Dish Network or DirecTV,” said Tessy Manzanares, with Coronado TV & Satellite.

When they tune to channel 319, Time Warner digital cable subscribers currently see a message on the screen. It’s a message to Cowboys owner, and key NFL Network supporter, Jerry Jones. Time Warner wants to carry the NFL Network as a digital channel. However, the NFL says no. The league wants access to all cable subscribers, as well as a big chunk of change.

“Business is business, but I think the NFL is big enough where it makes enough money on the fans and the sponsors that pay into it, and I think that the game should be available for all parties to watch,” said Mike Gorman, of northeast El Paso.

Time Warner argues the NFL is holding fans hostage, demanding a ransom for a channel showing just eight late-season games. Some fans argue they pay enough already.

“Subscribers pay anywhere between $70 to a $100 right now to have cable or satellite. I don’t think they should have to pay to get eight additional games. I don’t think it’s right,” said Gorman.

The battle over giving customers what they want versus paying extra for what they used to get for free. In the end, for many, this dispute is all about the bottom line.

Yep. As always, follow da money …

Update III: ST reader and GB fan steveegg says that the game will be broadcast on radio via Westwood One. Go here, click on “NFL Thursday Night Football” and then your state to find out what station you can tune into in your city to listen to the game.

Update IV: The sports radio stations in my area aren’t broadcasting it. Here’s a station that is. Here’s the direct link to listen.

Update V: NFL has live feed of the game on its website (via Hot Air.com commenters). As you can imagine, the feed is a bit slow because there are probably a lot of people accessing it.

  1. The only unsportsmanlike conduct I want to perform is on the NFL Network and the cable companies for not getting their cow burgers together so that the games would be on cable. >:p

  2. steveegg says:

Oh, nelly. I don’t know if I’ll be able to remember which live/open thread I’m in :">

Your final from the NFC Championship Round I -
    Green Bay 28
    Dallas 27

Round II to be in the Frozen Tundra.

  3. William – yeah, what up with that? I looked all over the place to try and find out what (if any) other networks the game would be on, and couldn’t find anything.

steve – LOL … you’re like the Engergizer bunny, friend ;)

  4. steveegg says:

    Good song choice.

I’m ready for some football, and hoping the NFLN passes the HD feed down the line to the three local affiliates lucky enough to carry the game (WISN/Milwaukee here).

  5. steveegg says:

The game will be on the Westwood One radio network (no idea which station that is in Charlotte).

Things will be a bit “wild” in TheWisconsinSportsBar open thread (language warning; we’ve already popped off a few bombs in the HaloScan comments, which is where the gang does the liveblog thing).

  6. steve, just added an article to my post that talks about the network’s refusal to broadcast on cable. It stinks x(

  7. steveegg says:

Just found two possibilities for Westwood One in Charlotte (dunno which one it will be) – WFNZ-AM (610) or WFNA-AM (1660).

The NFL and TimeWarner/Comcast are both fighting over the bottom dollar. The NFLN accepted lesser billing on DirecTV/Dish (the equivalent of digital cable) and certain small cable networks (including a sports tier in at least one case).

  8. Thanks – just looked up the info a few mins ago. I’ll try FNZ.

  9. steveegg says:

Good news for the 22nd; NFLN is sending the HD feed down the line to the local affiliates. Whether the locals send that out is another question (mine is).

  10. steveegg says:

Class – moment of silence for Sean Taylor.

  11. steve, let your readers know they can access the game on Internet radio here if they can’t view it on TV.

  12. steveegg says:

    Will do.

    Almost six, instead it’s 3.

  13. steveegg says:

    That’s 3-0 Packers.

  14. steveegg says:

Despite zebras being in Jones’ back pocket, the Packers held the Boys to a field goal.

    Tied at 3.

  15. Leslie says:

3-3 as I post, listening to the Westwood 1 broadcast on WFAN New York.

Time Warner is my cable system. I don’t blame them for not carrying this NFL network. This time the league went too far.

There was no demand for games on Thursday night. The league just got lucky that this game just happened to be the “game of the week.” In addition, apparently the tv writers’ strike has caused the tv networks to start running their holiday-season repeats before the calendar only has one page left on it: CSI is a repeat tonight. I don’t know about Hot Medical Babes–I never watch that.

But we know how this is going to end–precisely the way the MLB network – cable agreement did: the league will give Time Warner et al. a piece of the action. The cable companies will put the NFL network on. All subscribers, whether they’re football fans or not, will have their rates hiked. Oh, and cable will get the Sunday football on demand package, which is now sold only to the satellite company.

  16. Hey Les! Good to see you posting tonight. So who are you rooting for?

  17. steveegg says:

Dallas with another field goal (a long one this time) to take a 6-3 lead.

  18. Thanks for the updates, steve – I have my portable heater on, making it hard for me to hear the game (don’t want to turn it up too loud or I’ll disturb the neighbors).

  19. steveegg says:

    That one hurt.

  20. The Panthers will have a game on the NFL network, too, and, unless you live in the Charlotte area, you won’t be able to see it.

One of the articles I read talked about the bar owners being big winners, but, they get charged a lot for the right to show the games, so quite a few won’t actually carry it.

  21. steveegg says:

And that pick turned into 7.

    13-3 Boys.

    <expletive deleted>

  22. William: Fortunately for out of town Panthers fans, they won’t miss much by not seeing that game :-<

steve: Cheer up … the night is still young!

  23. steveegg says:

Ryan Grant takes the rock for a long run.

13-10 Pack, 1 second left in the first (and I had already declared the 1st Q over at the Hot Air open thread, one of 4 I’m doing tonight).

  24. steveegg says:

We either got unlucky or very lucky; an onside attempt brushed up against a Packer, which helped them recover the kick.

They rekicked, the return went to midfield, but it got called back.

  25. Another Dallas TD …

(Now viewing the game on NFL.com’s live feed)

  26. What’s TO doing? Got him in Fantasy.

  27. steveegg says:

It’s going to be a long game.

20-10 Dallas as another tight end toasts the Pack. Unfortunately for those with fantasy teams, it wasn’t Witten.

  28. Dunno about ya’ll, but the commentary I’m listening to on the live feed is ahead of the video by about 10 seconds.

  29. steveegg says:

Bad Brett’s back. Two straight passes that should’ve been picked, and a third one’s picked.

    <string of expletives deleted>

    Time to drown my sorrows.

  30. Consider yourself lucky that he’s just having one bad night. The Panthers have bad nights every week ;)

  31. steveegg says:

We’ll be lucky if he has a bad day in 10 days; he was holding his throwing wrist on the way off the field after that last pick.

If he’s done, so are the Packers; they’d be lucky to beat Detroit at home in December.

  32. William, TO just scored a TD.

  33. Finally, the commentary and the video are in sync!

  34. steveegg says:

    I’m history.

  35. 6 catches, 140 yards, 1 TD for TO, William,

  36. Ok, ya’ll – I’m calling it an early night. G’nite!

  37. Pack only down by 10 going in to half time. Still time.

  38. steveegg says:

Make that 27-24 Packers thanks to a gift from the Dallas coaching staff. I would’ve kicked the long field goal instead of going for it on the 4th-and-short-2 the Boys had.

The scary thing for the Bears, Vikings and Lions is that it’s Rodgers that’s leading the charge.

  39. Proof says:

Thanks for the links! I wasn’t able to find the game locally!

  40. steveegg says:

After 3 (I just needed to cool off)

    Cowboys 27
    Packers 24

I’ll likely need to take a walk again shorly, as it’s 1st and goal Boys.

  41. steveegg says:

Thank you, Juggles Owens. That was just the way we drew up that defense.

    Still 27-24 Dallas.

  42. steveegg says:

Zebras strike again for another 7 Boys points.

  43. steveegg says:

Zebras cost the Pack a first down. Instead, a long field goal makes it 34-27 Boys.

  44. steveegg says:

    Game’s iced. 37-27 Boys with 1:03 left.

  45. steveegg says:

    And that’s your game.

  46. Dana says:

The NFL Network is available in tiny Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, in high def, on Blue Ridhe Cable.

  47. PCD says:

I watched the game on my dish. Having been raised in Green Bay and worked at Lambeau, I didn’t leave the couch to blog.

The bad news for the rest of the league is that Aaron Rodgers can play!

Watch for Farve to start at Oakland, but I now expect Rodgers to get much more playing time.

For you ‘boys fans, what do you have for a #2 QB?

  48. steveegg says:

That’s the one good thing to out of the game; we found out Rodgers isn’t the china doll we feared after his relief appearance last season.

  49. Leslie says:

I didn’t have a dog in the hunt, ST. I have always liked Favre, though, and I’m sorry he got hurt. I think Romo is terrific, too.

If Wade Phillips isn’t coach of the year, there’s no justice. He’s made Romo better than Parcells was able to, and he has T.O. playing football.

After I logged off last night, I just turned off my space heater (it finally got cold here!) snuggled into bed, and turned out the lights . . . and imagined the football field. (I’ve done this with baseball many times, but this is the first time I’ve done it with football in a looooong time.)

It was not all that hard to do. Especially since Westwood 1 (they’re a CBS affiliate) hired CBS’s Dick Enberg to do play by play. He had a few “oh my” moments, of course.
