Chavez DENIED

A rare bit of good news from Venezuela:

CARACAS, Venezuela – Humbled by his first electoral defeat ever, President Hugo Chavez said Monday he may have been too ambitious in asking voters to let him stand indefinitely for re-election and endorse a huge leap to a socialist state.

“I understand and accept that the proposal I made was quite profound and intense,” he said after voters narrowly rejected the sweeping constitutional reforms by 51 percent to 49 percent.

Opposition activists were ecstatic as the results were announced shortly after midnight — with 88 percent of the vote counted, the trend was declared irreversible by elections council chief Tibisay Lucena.

Some shed tears. Others began chanting: “And now he’s going away!”

Without the overhaul, Chavez will be barred from running again in 2012.

Foes of the reform effort — including Roman Catholic leaders, media freedom groups, human rights groups and prominent business leaders — said it would have granted Chavez unchecked power and imperiled basic rights.

Alberto de la Cruz at the Babulu blog provides a cautionary reminder:

Let us celebrate tonight, for tomorrow the dictator will already have begun brewing up a new plan to maintain his stranglehold on power.

Yep, but in the meantime, I think this post says it all.

Can I ask a question here?? Why is it whenever a leftist tries to “reform” things to their advantage it is always “profound and intense” or some other garbage?? Why can’t these guys just do things within the confines of the agreed upon rules??

Also, I would like to finish the above quote.
“Now that I cannot install myself as permanent dictator. With the help of my friends in Hollywood, I will force the people to see the light. I will be declaring a state of emergency as George Bush is about to invade us. I will throw out Our Constitution, and raise myself as a military dictator. It is all George Bush’s fault.” Overheard elsewhere Hillary telling someone about how George Bush has destoyed another constitutional government and alienated another ally. – Lorica

Chavez has until 2012 to try and get this thing passed again. Hopefully, he’ll change his ways somewhat and not screw up his country. I don’t know if that’s possible unless the opposition against him continues to be strong, which is brave on thier part as he controls alot of things in that country.

I admit to being very surprised at this outcome. It certainly bucks the trend. Not often we get to see an incompetant dictator…. ;))

Me too Tango, perhaps he should’ve hired that elections crew that got dictator Gregoire installed in WA state. Her margin was even closer than 51-49 but she had the added advantage of 3,000 bogus voter registrants to get herself lodged.

    Wonder how many Chavez had/has…..

OT, btw the link above is a quote from the chief moron that speaks to her level of hypocrisy -case in point- the refusal to eliminate stupid hippies blocking public access in an attempt to sabotage the efforts on the WOT.
