Congress screws around with border fence

Yeah, like who didn’t see this one coming a mile away? Via the Washington Times:

Congress last night passed a giant new spending bill that undermines current plans for a U.S.-Mexico border fence, allowing the Homeland Security Department to build a single-tier barrier rather than the two-tier version that has worked in California.

The spending bill, written by Democrats and passed 253-154 with mostly their votes, surrenders to President Bush’s budget demands, meeting his spending limit with a $515 billion bill to fund most of the federal government and setting up votes to pay for the Iraq war. But Democrats reached his goal in part by slashing his defense and foreign-aid priorities to pay for added domestic spending.

The concessions promise to end a months-long budget standoff before Congress adjourns for the year and takes a Christmas break scheduled to start by Friday. In a rare two-step maneuver, the House first voted 253-154 to approve the bill to fund most of the civilian Cabinet agencies, and then voted 206-201 to add about $30 billion for Afghanistan war-spending to the measure.

But the measures did not pass before House Republicans blasted the changes to the border fence.

“The fact that this was buried in a bloated, 3,500-page omnibus speaks volumes about the Democrats’ unserious approach on border security and illegal immigration,” said House Minority Leader John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican. “Gutting the Secure Fence Act will make our borders less secure, but it’s consistent with the pattern of behavior we’ve seen all year from this majority.”

The Captain said this spending bill represents a payback of sorts from Democrats to Republicans:

This mostly came from the Democrats, although Kay Bailey Hutchison also contributed. She responded to landowners in Texas who resent the installation of the fence as an intrusion on their land. Her spokesperson also insinuated that Hutchison knows better than Duncan Hunter as to what will secure a Texas border, even though Hunter has shown how effective the double-barrier fence has been in San Diego.

Mostly, though, robbing the border fence allows the Democrats to pay back the White House for playing hardball on the budget. They resented his scolding over the budget-busting proposal the Democrats prepared earlier this month, and House Appropriations chair David Obey threatened to defund the administration’s priorities — as well as all of the earmarks. When Republican leadership mostly called his bluff (mostly) on the latter, Obey instead went after the fence.

It may make Democrats feel better, but they just handed the Republicans a very large bat for the 2008 Congressional elections. Polls have repeatedly shown that the electorate overwhelmingly wants the southern border secured. By deliberately undermining that process, the Democrats put a number of the seats they won in 2006 in primarily center-right districts at further risk. People were frustrated enough when all the 109th could do on immigration was pass that fence bill — and they’re not likely to respond well when the 110th’s only action is to reverse course.

Ahhhh Yes isn’t it good that the Dems continue to “care about the security” of this country. Seems to me with enemies like these, why would Bin Laden need friends. He has all the co-conspirators he needs to achieve his goals.

This is exactly why when last summer’s immigration reform bill came forward I petitioned against it. Who can trust these people when they knowingly will weaken the security of the United States, in an attempt to be spiteful toward the opposition party. This is serious, and these guys want to play party games. God I pray that the Dem electorate wakes up and realizes it is time to get rid of these children. – Lorica

Lorica, remember the list of American enemies that Sev posted ( These traitors and saboteurs keep painting bulls eyes on their chests believing they will not be shot, as America is taught to roll over and play dead, thanks in no small part to the lamestream media and undiversities across our great land.

    Their time draws nigh.

Amen Forest Hunter. I believe that the only way Hillary is going to win in 2008 is if she steals the election. I also fear that the theft will be so blatant that those who want to be deceived will cover it up for her. Then I think all get out is going to break loose. I have been wrong in the past and most likely my fears are ungrounded, but this scenerio still bothers me. – Lorica

I have G, what a bunch of hopeless loons, wanting so desperately to be raped by their own willful ignorance.

That border fence should have been built by now, but no, the Congress is still playing games with it, and has now cut the funding for it. It is 100% clear that Congress wants the southern border to remain wide open. It is equally clear that we need to clean house in Congress and get rid of these traitors who put the interests of foreigners ahead of those of the US. This has got to stop NOW! Get that fence built NOW!!

Hmmmm….Have we checked who is building this wall…Its very possible its being done with illegal labor…Just like Mitts lawn work…..Bring the troops home and put them on the border that will make it secure…..I do believe we need to secure our borders….The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882….aimed at keeping Chinese out of the country….The British Passenger Act aimed at keeping the Irish out of the country….The Gentleman’s Agreement of 1907 aimed at the Japanese…The Immigration restriction league who Henry Cabot Lodge was a member helped introduce the Immigration Act of 1917 pointed at limiting the people of southern and eastern Europe the Italians, Russians, Poles, Hungarian, Greeks, and Asians (Although Mexicans were exempt because the Southwest needed the labor force Hmmmmm)…..This immigration question didn’t just pop up it has been around for a long time as to who we should let in and there has always been a resistance against what are considered people who would dilute the strength of this country….but history has proven that just hasn’t happened…There are 12 million plus people in this country that have been here for a long time…we need to figure out a way to make them legal…the slap in the face of those who have waited for years is that we were so lax and let the illegal immigration from Mexico happen in the first place…..

There are 12 million plus people in this country that have been here for a long time…we need to figure out a way to make them legal

Oh, OK…so if enough people commit a crime, you want to figure out a way to legalize it? If we have a couple of million murderers, or rapists, or illegal Clinton fund-raisers, then we tear those pages out of the legal code and set them all free, right? What drivel…

What we need to do is secure the border first, and don’t try telling me it can’t be done. Where the wall has actually been built, it’s working.

Then we systematically begin finding the illegals and sending them home, starting with the ones who commit crimes beyond the illegal entry, and then any others who identify themselves. And I don’t care how it’s done…I’d be willing to have ICE officers on call at hospitals for when illegals show up for free health care, and take them in right then and there.

Your suggestion would only make matters worse. It would be proof positive that crime pays here, and only fools immigrate to America legally.

Your last statement is spot on, however…letting this happen at all was the first mistake. The best service we can do to legal immigrants is to clamp down on the illegals, not reward them further.
