The moderator for Thursday night’s Palin-Biden debate: Fair and balanced?

Posted by: ST on September 30, 2008 at 10:46 pm

No way, no how, not Gwen Ifill.

Thursday AM Update – 10:22 AM: Here’s a good suggestion, via a reader of NRO’s Campaign Spot blog:

Campaign Spot reader Bill offers a good idea:

Maybe Governor Palin could compliment Ms Ifill on her book.

Palin (to Ifill): I understand you’ve been writing a book about black political progress, including Senator Obama’s campaign. I’d just like to take a moment to congratulate you on your literary endeavor and wish you great success. Having written many speeches, political and others, I find that it’s very rewarding to translate your personal, original thoughts to text — don’t you agree, Senator Biden?

    1. *sigh*

They really should disclose Ifill’s coverage of Obama before the debate. Even if she isn’t consciously biased, she’s too close to the subject and has a vestd interest in him doing well.

      Un-effing believable.:-?

    3. Lorica says:

Ohhh goody perhaps we will be privy to such interesting questions as “Barry what type of under garment do you prefer, tighty whities or boxers with little paislies on them???” – Lorica :-&

Gwen Ifill has more than money in this thing. She wants BO to win more than she cares about her career or the way she appears to the public. They’ve thrown journalism out the window this year. We have a press that Stalin would be proud of.

I expect the debate to become Sarah v. Gwen from the first question. And if Biden talks about FDR on tv in 1929, Ifill will agree with him. I fully expect truth to be turned on its head.

It was never about fairness, not from the outset. It’s about surviving the bias.

Who would we trade her for? They are ALL in the tank for Obama. All of them.

This is going to be bad.

    5. HondaV65 says:

It’s not the questions she’s going to ask.

It’s the fact that she will give the questions, and the order of the questions .. To Joe Biden. He will then be able to “craft” sound bite answers that make him look awesomely smart. He will also be able to structure and control the tempo of the debate and craft a 90-minute ad for Obama … free of charge … aired during prime time.

You think this is paranoid? The woman stands to earn MILLIONS off an Obama win. This book is set to release on inauguration day – it’s not going to make much money unless Obama is the one being inaugurated. Do you trust her? Would you trust your best friend around a million dollars? Come on! This is disgusting.

    6. Leslie says:

The McCain campaign was, or at least should have been, aware of Ms. Ifill’s background and vetoed her as a moderator, assuming they thought that background was problematic.

    7. Mwalimu Daudi says:

Yet another unforced error by the McCain campaign. Looking for an unbiased moderator from PBS is like looking for a non-racist in the KKK or NAACP. Talk about a fool’s errand!

Too bad (from their own point of view) that the MSM did not propose that Howard Dean, Gloria Steinem and Michael Moore be a trio of moderators for this debate. Would the McCain campaign have agreed, or would they have insisted on Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews and Hugo Chavez instead?

One bad week for McCain has now turned into an even worse second one. One dreads next week, although the McCain campaign will be hard-pressed to top the idiocy of the last two. Maybe a 57-state landslide for the Messiah is not out of the question after all.

    8. Howard says:

The nation already is skeptical about the fairness and objectivity of the mainstream media regarding election coverage … so, why in the world is Gwen Ifill the debate moderator, when she is writing a book about Obama … especially since her book sales would increase if Obama/Biden win? The moderator in a debate … especially one of this importance and magnitude … should be seen as completely fair, objective and above reproach. This is a terrible choice, and could easily have been remedied by choosing from hundreds of other more objective potential moderators. I can imagine the outcry if Michelle Malkin, or Ann Coulter was chosen as the moderator for the first Vice Presidential debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden. FURTHERMORE … Everyone knows that Roland Martin is in the tank for Obama … and regarding his call for Palin to either ‘put up, or shut up’ … for millions of Americans, we still feel that Obama never adequately explained why he chose to spend TWENTY YEARS, yes TWENTY YEARS, in Jeremiah Wright’s anti-American, racist, black liberation church, which gave a life time achievement award to Louis Farrakhan, and Obama only quit the church due to public outrage and personal ambition.
