Not sure if I’ll be watching the lie/blame-athon tonight (may crack open Game Change), but wanted to start an open thread for those of you who will be watching and who also wanted to comment. The speech starts at 9 PM ET (in actuality, it’ll probably start bout 15 minutes later, because the President has a habit of being late).
Politico’s Glenn Thrush has a preview of sorts of what to expect for the POTUS’ first SOTU speech (via Tom Maguire).
As always, you can catch the speech on C-SPAN in the event you can’t get to a TV.
Wanna have some fun tonight? Play the SOTU drinking game:
Lots of readers keep asking when we’ll come up with our version. I’m not sure there’s room to be too original here. His usual phrases are familiar enough: “Let me be clear,” “make no mistake,” “this will not be easy” etc. There’s nothing wrong with that sort of thing. One different way to go is conceptual or thematic. Every time Obama suggests there’s a consensus among experts about a proposal when there isn’t, drink. Every time he claims to be aligned with the populist backlash he created, drink. Every time he suggests that History with a capital H demands that we do whatever it is he’s talking about, drink. Every time he says that he’s being “pragmatic” or “bipartisan” when he’s actually being wildly ideological or partisan, drink. And so on.
My own preference is to drink every time he says something that will obviously cost me money. If that seems like an invitation to alcohol poisoning, you could narrow it down slightly by drinking only when something will cost you money and make the economy worse at the same time.
Ed Morrissey has a good suggestion as well:
How about this: every time Obama talks about taking a courageous stand in demanding something both stupid and unpopular be done (like ObamaCare), drain your glass and refill.
TOTUS, fired up and ready for tonight, has some final thoughts:
Big Guy calling for repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” meaning, “Don’t ask me questions, and don’t expect answers.”
And:
Big Guy will announce a “new foundation for prosperity” built on top of the ruins he made of our old prosperity.
Sounds about right.
A couple of more things: Senator-elect Scott Brown, who hopes to be sworn in on/by Feb. 11, will not be at tonight’s SOTU. And Rep. Joe “You Lie!” Wilson says a lot of people are asking to sit by him tonight – presumably for all the media attention he’ll get.
Update 1 – 7:14 PM: LOL … here’s a site devoted to SOTU drinking games ![]()
Drudge just posted excerpts from the speech.
Newly sworn-in Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) will give the response to Obama’s SOTU (excerpts here). Joe Wilson will be giving the GOP’s live Facebook response approximately 30 minutes after the SOTU.
Update 2 – 8:55 PM: Chicks on the Right have created a handy SOTU bingo card for you to have on hand tonight
(via Susan)
And yes – I’ve decided to watch the speech. You can follow my commentary on the speech via my Twitter page.

Well, I know the Republicans are going to have a Response, but they should also have an Introductory Message (before the SOTU).
Introductory Message: “Good evening fellow Americans…get ready for the usual b.s. from the king of same.”
Response Message: “Good evening fellow Americans…were we right or what?”
This man is such a lying puke
Did this man just say that elections should not be financed from overseas money?? How much money did you take from George Soros Sir!!
Whoops – just went over my Tweet limit. Looks like my Tweet liveblogging is over for tonight
Whhoops – it’s letting me tweet again
I watched the whole thing without getting sick once!
He made an astounding suggestion: build more nuclear plants! Problem with that is that he will tighten environmental regulations to the point the plants won’t be built before 2110, if then. Gotta protect all the little fishies and flowers, ya know, the people be damned.
Other than that, about 1/2 of his speech could have been taken from a Republican speech, so you know he was just blowin’ smoke there. The rest of it was mostly about himself, so ya know there was absolutely no substance to it at all.
But the guy can read awfully well. It’s easy to see why those with only vestigial brains voted for this walking piece of pig poop. Typical arrogancia, and of course blamed all his woes on GWB.
BTW, he also promised everything would be open and above board from now on, especially legislative negotiations.
Look for the most obscure functioning of guvmint evah!
It was all about him, trying to woo people back to the love, campaigning is such hard work, and you just don’t see how I do it all for you, I love you…. almost Evita like
They are illusions
They are not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me
It sure as shit wasn’t about the STATE OF THE UNION. It was pleading.
I am still stunned by O’s direct attack on the SCOTUS. Alito’s “response” was the only thing that saved my TV from certain death. All the partisan rhetoric, fabrications and disjointed ramblings were just silly and easily dismissed. But SCOTUS? While they sat in front of him? Words fail me.
It was my true intention to watch the SOTU, but just couldn’t tear myself away from Ghost Whisperer on ION. However, I did manage to watch snippets of his acting ability and noticed that he was talking down to the Republicans once again, blaming them for everything. Besides that, the spiders, frogs and intestinal toxicity that was coming out of his mouth was a stench filled atrocity which was soiling the delicate flora of my psyche. After awhile he sounds like Charlie Brown’s Teacher… WA WA WAAAAAAA WA WA. Very distracting.
The one expression that really makes me puke is when our Dear Leader Comrade Barry makes reference to “Act Boldly And Swiftly”
The Ghost Whisperer sounds like something I need to check out. Gremlins sound like such a better choice….
