Happy Valentine’s Day, Obama: Some Dems “seek permission” to distance themselves from admin

The LA Times reports (via Rob Port):

As President Obama’s approval ratings sag and the mood of voters sours, some Democratic congressional candidates are distancing themselves from the White House, with the back-channel blessing of party officials.

The candidates are positioning themselves as independent voices no less frustrated with the Obama administration than people back home.

Rep. Dennis Cardoza, a Democrat who represents a California Central Valley district burdened by high unemployment and home foreclosures, said in an interview: “The Obama administration has failed miserably in trying to solve the problem.”

Rep. Jim Costa, a Democrat who also represents California’s Central Valley, blames Interior Secretary Ken Salazar for not doing enough to alleviate a drought that has hobbled farmers. Costa said his phone calls to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel have gone unreturned.

“They’re not listening carefully enough to the people I represent,” Costa said.

Asked whether he wants the president to campaign for him, Costa said: “I’m more popular in my district than the president.”

Far from discouraging an independent stance, the White House political operation and the Democratic congressional leadership are tacitly putting out word that the strategy may be a useful one, according to party campaign operatives.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), who leads the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said in an interview: “Our candidates need to reflect the values and priorities of their districts. And that means on some issues they’ll support the Obama administration’s position, and on some issues they’ll oppose it.”

Er, um, correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the fact that some of these Dems have felt like they needed to get blessings from Dem party officials and the WH on the issue of showing “independence” a strong indicator that they are not, in fact, “independent”? :-?

Just askin’ …

Reminds me of the mousy guy who tells his friend “I’m the boss at home,” and then turns to his wife: “If that’s OK with you, dear.” ;)

As a reader from California who knows the Central Valley well (trust me folks, that is some of the richest farmland in the world, and the Democrats are turning it into a dustbowl), all a Republican running against Costa or Cardoza has to do is ask his listeners, “Who turned off the water?” The votes will follow.

Yeah, they’re as independent as any patient will be trying to get the doctor of his or her choice three years into ObamaCare, or trying to get an insurance policy that fits them the day that abortion becomes law.

    Independent, my patootie!

  3. Hawkins says:

I assume they are independent up until the moment the polls close on election day.

perhaps a few make an appearance at a Tea Party to keep appearances

Costa said: “I’m more popular in my district than the president.”
Didn’t General Custer say something similar just before he yelled; “Charge!!”
I do believe the outcome in November 2010 will end up the same.

Drought? Don’t they mean man-made aquatic disaster? Isn’t this the area that is willing to destroy farms for the sake of some stupid shad? Boy, the press can be creative when they want to be. Reap what you sow California.

Dennis Cardoza is my blue dog Congressman. He originally endorsed Hillary Clinton but in May 2008 he announced he was switching his endorsement to Obama.

Hillary won his district in the primary by double digits. Last summer Cardoza was slobbing Obama’s knob on health care but he was too cowardly to host a town hall.

Biden speaking in public, Obama’s latest poll ratings and Dems running away from this administration all make me smile. If nothing else they are all good for a laugh.=))
