Tone-deaf Prez to give jobs plan speech at NC co. shipping jobs overseas

So reports the Daily Caller:

President Barack Obama will present his “jobs plan” on Wednesday at a company which is shipping jobs overseas.

Obama is scheduled to present his “jobs plan” in Apex, N.C., on Wednesday at the headquarters of WestStar Precision.

WestStar is a high-end, specialty manufacturer that just opened a new facility in San Jose, Costa Rica — creating many new jobs there, but not in the United States.

“Our main office and manufacturing facility near Research Triangle Park in the Raleigh/Durham area has approximately 11,000 sq. ft. of office space, production area and warehouse,” the company says on its website. “This facility has more than doubled in size from inception. Equipment includes precision CNC Machining centers, water jet cutter and CAD-CAM design stations.”

On the same page, WestStar Precision describes its new location, which is almost as big, in Costa Rica: “Our new office and manufacturing facility in San Jose, Costa Rica, also has approximately 10,000 sq. ft. with similar equipment as the main office. This facility is designed for high volume production to support our international and domestic clients.”

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not hatin’ on a company that is doing what it thinks it needs to do (‘The company began hiring in Costa Rica, the News & Observer reported in 2004, to “take advantage of low labor costs.”‘). Just wondering which planet our celebrity President currently resides on for thinking that presenting his “jobs plan” for American workers there will persuade doubters. Then again, maybe it wasn’t meant to:

The owner of the company, Ervin Portman, is a local Democrat on the Wake County, N.C. Board of Commissioners. He donated $1,000 to Obama’s 2008 campaign. Portman and his wife together donated several thousand more to other Democratic candidates and the state Democratic party.

And then there’s this, via The Weekly Standard’s Michael Warren:

According to the White House press office, WestStar is a company “that will benefit from the bipartisan proposals in the American Jobs Act.”

How’s that work again? Scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours? We’re heard this song before. It’s a problem for both parties, and a charge that is currently plaguing GOP presidential candidate/TX Gov. Rick Perry. Christopher Horner argues here that Perry’s crony capitalism problem is not on par with President Obama’s, but I think the distinction – even if believable – is moot. The American people, with the exception of “gimme mine” Big Labor supporters, despise these types of political paybacks, no matter how “well-intentioned” (cough) they might have been ….

Hmm… Big Democratic donor, gets an Obama speech… Anyone check to see if they got any Stimulus money. Not that I would expect another Solyndra… ;)

  2. Bill G says:

Jobs “created” by Bam-Bam’s programs seem to cost about $250,000 each. Any way I can sign up to get the quarter-mil directly?

  3. Tex says:

Looks like Obama is still clueless about how our economy works.

  4. Carlos says:

Awww, come on, folks. The jobs in Costa Rica are simply a means for the locals to get enough money to come here illegally, where they won’t have to work to get our government’s largess, and will be able to vote for whatever communist comes along.

Just consider those jobs as early payment for Obhammud’s re-election.

  5. Tex says:

His jobs bill that he wants Congress to pass is designed to create jobs for union members pretty much exclusively if you look at the types of jobs he claims it will create. He’s just trying to placate the unions for his reelection bid next year. Nothing serious here about getting ALL Americans back to work.

  6. imtellinya says:

Phineas, it was an excellent question you asked on whether Westar received stimulus funds. The answer is yes – and they brag about it on their own website:

“Simple Savings is a program available to customers to upgrade heating and cooling systems, add insulation, implement air-tightening measures, or make other approved energy efficiency improvements to their home or small commercial property and repay the cost on their Westar Energy bill. Simple Savings is made possible with federal stimulus funds through the Kansas Energy Office.”

The O begins to resemble Mussolini more each day. This is sheer Corporatism.

  7. Carlos says:

In his ethereal mind reality has no place. If he recognized that by putting ALL Americans back to work he would put union members back to work in record numbers, he would have a better handle on the situation.

His reality, though, is to keep non-union people on the public dole and put union members back to work. That makes them dependent upon the government, and potential Democrap voters.

He has it exactly opposite of what it needs to be to curry favor from the unions.

I’m sorry I made a dumb mistake and want to retract my statement above – I confused Westar Energy, a company that did receive federal bailout money, with Westar Precision, a company which says it has received neither SBA loans or bailout money. I thought they were affiliated but they are not.
