South Carolina GOP Primary – Open Thread

Posted by: ST on January 21, 2012 at 9:46 am

Hey y’all,

I’m not going to be around much if at all today. Someone has a birthday to celebrate this weekend. ;)

As you know, the South Carolina primary is today. The weather here in Charlotte stinks right now – rainy and chilly, and it’s not that much different in SC. In fact, I read earlier this morning that parts of SC are under a tornado watch. No telling how the weather will affect turnout – I seem to recall in 2008 the weather was snowy there but don’t remember how much it impacted turnout.

In any event, please use this open thread to discuss your thoughts on today’s GOP primary, or anything else you may have on your mind.

Later, taters. :-)

I may be a dumb Yankee, but aren’t elections supposed to be held on Tuesdays?:-?

  2. I voted for Romney today and the turnout was very light early. Turnout in Charleston is also light and Romney will need the more moderate votes from that area to balance Newt’s surge. Newt saw a big surge from his debate performance but people need to understand that he won’t get those opportunities against obama.

Newt will eventually do what Newt does which is go off the rails. For the sake of Republicans, let’s hope he does this before he is the nominee.

    Results tonight should be interesting.

It is being held on Tuesday, Tom. It’s just that calendars in SC are hard for the people to read and understand, and “21″ looks so much like “24,” and it’s so easy to mistake “Saturday” for “Tuesday,” and…well, you get the idea.

And before I get flamed by Carolinians, I really did spend a wonderful year of my life in SC. The best anecdote I have is when I walked up to a middle-aged gentleman and asked him what time it was. He looked to the sky and said in a real drawl, “Sho looks lauk ran taday.”

  4. Carlos says:

Yahoo!, for whatever that is worth, is calling it for Newt already.

  5. Drew says:

Damn, ST. I’ve got 7 inches of snow and you are complaining? I was in your fine city last week. 50-60 degrees. Heaven.

    Call me disgruntled Chicago boy.

    :((

  6. Tex says:

Looks like CNN’s plan to torpedo Newt backfired. I’ll bet they’re wondering what could have possibly gone wrong.

Hopefully they will continue to try and sink the Republican candidate two or three days before the Presidential election in November – that ought to ensure a Republican win.

  7. Carlos says:

Democraps aren’t bulldogs, Tex, they’re pit bulls that’ll rip at anything they perceive as a threat until it’s mangled, lifeless, and useless.

All in the name of harmony and tolerance, understand, but still mindless attack machines that can only spew the hate their was founded upon.

And I get the feeling more and more of the rube voting public is beginning to see a glimmer of the truth there.

  8. Drew the Infidel says:

Keep in mind a different candidate has won each of the three primaries so far; Santorum in IA, Romney in NH, and now Gingrich in SC. FL will be interesting because Romney has already “laid in”, or bought in advance, $3.5 million in advertising there.

BTW, Tex, the date for national elections is dictated as the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November by the Constitution. Primaries are set by the GOP itself.

  9. Tom TB says:

I’m not too concerned about the end game. Both of my siblings who voted 0bama (don’t blame ME; they didn’t consult me first!!) are now under employed, and they see the error of their ways.

  10. Rickvid in Seattle says:

“Debate” moderator to Gingrich: Mr. Gingrich, tell us when you plan to cheat on your wife.

“Debate” moderator to Romney: Mr. Romney, tell us where you will put the baptismal bath to baptise dead people in the White House.

“Debate” moderator to Obama: Mr.President, tell us again how wonderful you are!

The part I don’t like about this whole process so far is that the republicans are attacking each other to the death instead of obama. When the smoke clears and only one republican is left standing obama is going to have a lot of ammo to use. The candidates need to speak to the rape of America that is happening daily in Washington, District of Criminals.

Speaking of weather, we get all the national networks via satellite. We were watching NBC in Los Angeles one day not long ago and the anchors were complaining about the bitter cold. The outside temperature was 67 degrees. Our temperature was -3. Good for a belly laugh and shows how soft them libs really be.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR!!!! HUGS :)
