#Trayvon: @NBCNews blames “error in production process” for doctored Zimmerman 911 call

Posted by: ST on April 3, 2012 at 5:58 pm

Via WaPo’s Erik Wemple:

NBC has completed its investigation into the mishandling of the police dispatcher’s conversation with George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin case. And the process ends with a finding of error, plus an apology. Here is the statement just issued by the network:

During our investigation it became evident that there was an error made in the production process that we deeply regret. We will be taking the necessary steps to prevent this from happening in the future and apologize to our viewers.

That apology addresses the “Today” show’s failure to abridge accurately the conversation between Zimmerman and the dispatcher in this high-profile case. This is how the program portrayed a segment of that conversation:

Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.

And here is how it actually went down:

Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.

Dispatcher: OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?

Zimmerman: He looks black.

“Error made in the production process”? What a flimsy, lame excuse.  And completely unbelievable.  Heads should roll over this.  Not only that, but NBC should also be apologizing to George Zimmerman and his family for the doctored tape, which I would bet money was deliberately doctored before airing.  Hey, they’ve pulled racially sensationalistic crap like this before.

As I’ve said before, when all is said and done and assuming Zimmerman isn’t put in jail for the rest of his life over killing Trayvon Martin, both he and his family should sue the mainstream media for the outright falsehoods they’ve reported and the unsubstantiated speculation some members of the press corps have shamelessly tried to pass off as “fact.”  The dereliction of duty by “straight news reporters” on this case is simply staggering, and it is paramount that they be held to account.

Since editing is part of the production process I’d say yes, editing out part of the conversation to make it appear that Zimmerman was a racist profiling an innocent boy is an “error in the production process”. It’s also a malicious lie that shows intent to assassinate the man’s character.

    2. Sefton says:

      What they really meant…

During our “investigation” it became evident that the best excuse we could muster was that there was an error made in the production process, and then give it the stock tag “that we deeply regret”. We will be taking the necessary steps to keep pretending that this won’t happen in the future and, when it does, toss out another faux apology to our viewers if and when we’re caught.

    3. Lorica says:

LOL The best excuse is they will do anything … or USE anything to get public sympathy for Obama. What a bunch of lowlife pukes. I just hope that Zimmerman doesn’t settle out of court after it is all said and done. – Lorica

    4. Great White Rat says:

The MSM’s entire performance in the Martin-Zimmerman case has been “flimsy and lame.” In their haste to help the leftists gin up another round of racial animosity, they’ve pushed a weak case and the narrative is now unraveling rapidly. This is just the first instance of the MSM pulling back and trying desperately to regain credibility. There will be more.

I’m waiting for the first MSM outlet to backtrack from using the term “white hispanic” to describe Zimmerman. That was the first sign that they were all in on the plan to make this a racial issue.

Best description of the way the case has been treated so far was from a commenter on the WSJ’s opinion page today: “Brown Democrat shoots Black Democrat, White Republicans blamed.”

    5. mitch says:

Excuse me for just a moment here, but, “investigations,” are generally carried out by civil law enforcement or Federal authorities. Since when does a news organization like NBC, carry out an, “investigation?” Is this what this nation has become? A crime has been committed and NBC investigates the crime? Please.

    6. SpideyTerry says:

I don’t think it’s so much an error in production process. It was too stupid for that – generations of in-breeding stupid.

    7. Just Curious 2 says:

This was no low level oversight. This was an intentional act of lies through omitting information that puts an entirely different light on what the 911 call was. It is a blatant act to fire up the the left to get them to the polls.

    8. Drew the Infidel says:

NBC’s has offered up an excuse instead of a reason because they got caught trying to be part of the story instead of simply reporting it which was their job in the first place. I know from personal experince, as do others who read this, that if I had handled any job I ever worked in such a fashion I would have been handed a sandwich and a road map quickly.

    9. Jay Stevens says:

This is an amorphous “error” – and apology. So there will be no way to hold anyone at NBC legally liable.

These are “weasel words”, but I think – unfortunately – NBC is off the hook.

    10. Ralph Gizzip says:

Any time I think about NBC News all that comes to mind is an exploding Chevy truck. The only thing they’re sorry for is getting caught.

    11. SAM says:

NBC: “We rgret…that we got caught.”

Beyond that, has anyone else noticed that the overall story seems to be losing steam? I feel bad for the parents, but the outrageously outraged race hustlers seem to have taken this fiasco as far as they can take it.

    12. Kate says:

This is all to cover up for an impending civil lawsuit that will probably be brought against them in court and their liability for the death threats and emotional turmoil and fear that we placed the whole Zimmerman family under for this “error”.

We would all like to edit something to make it fit our ideas, but that’s not the way the news is supposed to work, NBC!

I’d like to make one of those calls that they make on Dateline to bait child molestors….but, instead make it a racially charged situation of sorts and see who shows up with their cameras first.

    13. Libertarian Advocate says:

Whenever Al “Tawana” Sharpton takes on a cause its the kiss of death for the endeavor. Gotta wonder when – if ever – the “community” will catch on that he is not what he paints himself to be.

    14. bob jones says:

The only regret all of these race hustlers who make a living being divisive have is that this didn’t happen later in the year so they could ride it right into Novemeber. Nothing to worry about though, I’m sure they are already on to exploiting their next crisis.

    15. Drew the Infidel says:

@bob jones–Agreed. This case is not recent news; the shooting happened a month and a half ago, not last week.

    16. Carlos says:

First, the only error, in NBC’s opinion, was one of reception, not production. It was we (well, some people anyway, probably both of their viewers) who saw the thing and heard what they produced, then had the gall to compare it to reality! NBCCBSABCCNNMSNBCETCETCETC “news” has nothing to do with reality, only ratings and stoking the fires of division and hatred.

Second, NBC got caught with their pants down. And ya know what? There wasn’t anything the pants were covering up, ’cause they have nothing to cover up – they are as transparently anti-American and anti-truth as Dear Leader. If they were real, and had ‘nads at all, they would be embarrassed. They aren’t, they don’t, and they weren’t.

And last, SpideyTerry (#6) is spot-on: Too much in-breeding!

    17. John Bibb says:

The American Pravda Media just made an innocent mistake. The 5216th. in a row.
Hey–it could happen to anyone! No liberal bias here.
      John Bibb

    18. Dana says:

The error made in the production process was that they got caught.

    19. Carlos says:

Actually, if they’d only waited a few more weeks nobody would have cared to check it out, and by trial time (I’m sure Zimmerman will be tried – elected officials will be too afraid the the race-baiters, including the president, not to) the lie would have been reported often enough that it would have become the truth.

    20. Bobbie Jone says:

What a malicious thing to do., it is so obvious. You should be fired.

    21. Mitch says:

The only time the mainstream media apologizes for anything is when they get caught. Well, what about all the times they don’t get caught? They are the mainstream media after all and ninety per cent of America watches them for their nightly news. Socialism 101. Control the news they read. Control the education of their children. Control the economy in such a way that they become dependent on the government for their needs.

    22. Mitch says:

What do we do here each evening, really? We spend our time these evenings talking about the failure of a great idea. Freedom. Is Obama the reason for that failure? I don’t really think so. In a really strong America, Obama would have been rejected. He never would have been elected in the first place and we wouldn’t be dealing with him now. This once great country is weak right now. Weakened by those who would have us become a Socialist country. And those who would go along with the idea, because they are too busy with their lives to realize that their country is being slowly taken over by Communists.

I comment sometimes here in the evenings because I don’t watch television. But I’m just like you. I have concerns about where this country is headed. I’m scared, actually. I’m looking for a way out of this nightmare and I don’t see one. Am I different from you? Do you not see the threat to our once great country? I don’t think any of the comments I have made here on this site have ever been responded to. Actually, that is a mystery to me. There is no conversation on this site between members. People post. Other people post. There is no conversation. Weird.

    23. Mitch says:

Let me ask you this. At least this requires an answer. What would you do to to combat this Federal Government led by a Madman that is out of of control? What would you do? What is your best solution?
