Young, healthy, uninsured crowd on #Obamacare so far: Not interested

ObamaCare

Just say no … to Obamacare.

Fox News reports that the uninsureds the administration desperately needs in order to try and make the so-called “Affordable Care Act” er, um affordable so far remain mostly uninterested in signing up for coverage:

Preliminary figures suggest the Obama administration is falling far short of its goal of signing up the young, healthy and uninsured for ObamaCare.

It’s a problem that could undermine the rollout of the law even more than the glitch-ridden website.

Experts say the health care program needs 40 percent of all enrollees to be between 18 and 34 years old — a prized demographic known in the industry as the “young invincibles.” They are considered young, healthy and relatively cheap to care for and are necessary to subsidize older and more expensive enrollees.

While the administration isn’t releasing numbers, of the six states that are keeping score, only 28 percent fit into the young and healthy demographic.

Fox News spoke with some Los Angeles residents in that age group, who said for them, buying health insurance just doesn’t make economic sense.

“A lot of people can’t afford it the way it is these days,” one young man said.

“I think a lot of young men my age nowadays probably don’t really look into it,” said another.

Though the government plans to start fining people who don’t sign up for coverage by March 31, 2014, experts say the numbers simply don’t add up for many young people.

Faced with expenses for rent, a car payment, auto insurance, food, and clothing, many would rather spend any leftover cash on travel, entertainment and even beer than drop $100 to $200 a month on something they don’t think they’ll need.

Outside a Starbucks in Santa Monica, a 20-something observed, “six or seven of my friends are uninsured right now.” A friend added, “I hate the fact that I’m going to have to pay the fine, but I’ll pay the fine.”

That’s because statistics show, the average uninsured male between the ages of 21 and 35 will see a physician as seldom as six times during that 14-year period, according to Carl Schramm, a former insurance company executive who now teaches economic policy at Syracuse University.

For those who are insured, the New York health care consultant company Milliman says men 19-34 years old will see a doctor 1.8 times a year compared with women, who will on average see a doctor 3.6 times. The two data points suggest many young people may not see health insurance as necessary.

And they aren’t the only ones.

It’s kind of a Catch 22 for Team Obama – they need young and healthy adults to sign up in order to balance out the “older” adults on Obamacare who have health issues that oftentimes get more expensive with age. Yet at the same time, they are counting on millions of people to opt to pay the fine rather than sign up …. in order to help “pay” for Obamacare.

You really can’t make this up. It’s like this law was doomed to fail from the start. Or something. Perhaps deliberately so

So now, instead of looking realistically at the situation and scrapping the disaster, our elected brainiacs will instead move to increase the fees paid by the dumb saps still working and who can afford it, and probably start nicking (non-union) businesses as an additional subsidy for their incredibly poorly thought-out “plan.”

Some people say this is all due to the Law of Unintended Consequences. Not true! It was very well thought out – to fail, and “force” the Democraps to pass a single-payer system.

I say, scrap the Democraps. That would include Democraps like Boehner, McCain and Lindsay.

    Well, duh.

The young people may not have fully developed brains, politically – after all, they did vote for Obama by a wide margin – but when it comes to spending their own money, they’re not stupid. They know what they need, and don’t want to pay big bucks for something they don’t need just because Big Brother says so. Haven’t they been taught that other people are supposed to pay those bills, not them?

Then there’s the incredibly stupid logic behind the Obamacare concepts. It’s established that they need gazillions of young people to ante up big bucks to pay for the older and less healthy people in order for the system to ‘work’. With that principle in mind, did it make sense to also stipulate that young folks could stay on their parents’ insurance plans until they turn 26? Seems to me that reduced the pool of available patsies to fork over the high premiums.

There are only two ways to look at this: (1) the administration and the congressional designers of Obamacare are so weapons-grade stupid that they didn’t know people would avoid paying high prices for something they don’t need, or (2) the administration knew this would fail, and are counting on the resulting chaos as a way to stick us with a single player plan, and that was their goal all along.

Me, I go with option 2. Obama even said, as far back as the 2008 campaign, that single payer was the ultimate goal.

  3. Given the very nature of a certain immaturity and the characteristics of youth, it is no wonder they are not stampeding to sign up. Between being forced to live at home while searching for a decent job in this Soviet economy of Obhammud’s creation, where will they find the wherewithal to do so?

What!? Young, healthy people MUST sign up — even if it isn’t in their best interests. The One requires it.

How can we make this happen?
We could lie to them. Oh, yeah, we’ve lied so much already: they won’t believe us.
I know! Let’s force them. We’ll change the rules (again) so that it will be in their best interest. Sign up for Obamacare, or we send them to ten years in the People’s Re-Education camp.

Serves them right, the little racists.
