Via Newsday:
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton slammed private-school voucher proposals yesterday, predicting that vouchers would eventually lead to the creation of taxpayer-financed white supremacist academies – or even a government-funded “School of the Jihad.”
[...]
“First family that comes and says ‘I want to send my daughter to St. Peter’s Roman Catholic School’ and you say ‘Great, wonderful school, here’s your voucher,’” Clinton said. “Next parent that comes and says, ‘I want to send my child to the school of the Church of the White Supremacist …’ The parent says, ‘The way that I read Genesis, Cain was marked, therefore I believe in white supremacy. … You gave it to a Catholic parent, you gave it to a Jewish parent, under the Constitution, you can’t discriminate against me.’”
As an adoring, if somewhat puzzled, audience of Bronx activists looked on, Clinton added, “So what if the next parent comes and says, ‘I want to send my child to the School of the Jihad? … I won’t stand for it.”
Sigh.

steve, you need glasses. The corruption is manifest in the Democrat party. A party that relies on vote fraud as if it were a sacred rite reserved to them only.
Greedy? Look at Bill, Hillary, Kerry, the Kennedys, and John Edwards as the poster children of greed and partying on greed.
Baklava,
Thanks for the insult.
No..the question was to foster dialog. It was intentionally left wide open in effort to gather wide opinion. And considering the points made by several posters I feel it was very successful in that endeavor.
Pam, PCD and Sanity made excellent points of what has gone wrong with some unions that they are familiar with. But I don’t think it’s fair or even an intelligent idea to generalize every union. The UAW made their bed and so did many others. So does that mean that collective bargaining is wrong?
We are all well aware of examples of greed and corruption and indifference towards members of some unions. But we have greed, corruption and indifference in the White House, Congress, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party and nobody here is crying about that except to single out their own political opposition and not be critical of their own affiliations.
But I have to tell you that for every good union there is a bad one. And in all fairness the worst unions are the generally the largest unions.
When is the last time you heard any news about the Pipefitters, the Tapers, EWU, H&REU, or the LBWU? Any news good or bad?
So either some of us are misinformed or some or are prejudice. Prejudice is not usually an isolated concept limited to one sect or organization. For many it’s a way of life. I myself am guilty of prejudice but I try hard not to rationalize those feeling but instead to work through them and make changes to better my thinking.
As far as Unions go. I myself have shut down my own shop because I could not agree with the Unions demands. I did not scab. I shut down and went to Greece leaving them to picket in the dirty Newark, NJ winter streets. They never picketed and 3 days later they wanted back in. Now the Union works with me not against me. But the large publicly owned shops they do bully and sometimes I get real pissed about that but I count my blessings. I have excellent workers, super-low turnover, and darn good benefits for them because of the Union. I would never on my own be able to afford the level of insurance coverage that the union provides them with. So I have mixed feeling on Unions.
Once again Steve blesses us with his words of wisdom. Steve wrote:
People in power maintain that power because most people are so stupid that they vote against their own best interests.
I am sorry Steve you are talking about liberal Democrats in that statement the reason I can say that is because liberals avoid facts and see things that are just not there. Example; Cheney was drunk while he was hunting all the moon bats know it’s true but there are no facts to back them up! Law enforcement interviewed Cheney and other hunters that were with him and even the man that was accidentally shot spoke up. But none of those facts matter Cheney is covering everything up.
Hey Steve those streaks across the sky are really vapor trails from the heat put out by jet engines.
Steve define greedy? Never mind here is the definition of greedy: “Excessively desirous of acquiring or possessing, especially wishing to possess more than what one needs or deserves.”

Steve you probably have more than you need or deserve according to someone else’s opinion.
Here are two excellent schools right in the heartland of America. School vouchers won’t really help any student get in these schools only excellence in academics or/and financial means will get a student enrolled.
Last night I spoke with a friend who I went to grad school with. She’s an educator and a psychologist at the Lab school. And she laid out an interesting case for the voucher program.
She said the the majority of money spent by public education is spent on administration and that whether the state gives vouchers or not it will not reduce the administration cost of public education. So the voucher will only be for the actual cost of educating the student minus the administration cost. So the teacher at public school will still make the same money but the classroom will be smaller. It’s a win situation for public school teachers. It’s not as much of a win for the parents because unless they want to send their child to a low budget private school they will have to cough up a hunk of cash every year. And private schools don’t care if you are indigent, unemployed..ect. They want their money and will think it nothing to unenroll a student who cannot pay.
So to take a states education budget and devide that by the number of students does not give you the amount each schooll voucher will be. The voucher will represent what is left over per student after administration cost. This is not even to mention that private education does not have that much capicity for traunches of newly enrolled students. So it will become even more competitive. This is actually a good thing for private schools. Because competition will ultimately bring about tuition increases. The more competition the greater the tuition.
As far as the hate based educators go. Perhaps it the price we pay for what in the end will a benefit for a small number of students who have the academic capacity and the means to attend private schools. But any welfare funding from the state will only be a drop in the bucket.
So you get what you pay for.

- For every story of benefitial actions on the part of Unions, you can find the exact opposite. I watched a company of 6800 people shut its doors, and put all of us on the street over a ten cent raise dispute, out of a workers package of benefits that would have amounted to 12K a year. Turned out later that the Union President was in a fight to keep his job with another Union head, and for purely self-serving reasons wouldn’t back down. The “other” problem with Unions, aside from eventually losing its reason for existing, is they are run by people with little or no controls and rules. As long as they maintain that original purpose, they are an invaluable means for workers rights, and an effective negotiating instrument. As soon as thats no longer in play they become as destroyers of everything they touch.
- Bang
GBA – Let Me tell you about a situation I had the displeasure to be envolved in a bout 6 months ago, concerning my son, who’s attending high school here in CA. During the summer he took PE to offset the normal year requirements so he could concentrate on additional studies. At one point some of the kids were so out of control I was obliged to visit the campus, and in front of all the teachers amd monitors call the perps out. I just stood in front of everyone and asked if any in the class thought they were tough enough to step up and I’d introduce them to a few of my detective friends in the SD police dept. Needless to say I got no takers.
- I also told the teachers that they needed to get it under control or the next thing they’d be doing is explaining it all to a judge in court.
- My kid is very big for his age. Thats not the problem. If he ever actually lost his temper he could really do some daamage. I was angry because he was there to learn, not deal with a bunch of out of control classmates.
- Fast forward to 6 months ago. He rides a bus home every day, I drive him to school. Some of the kids, two in particular, were acting up on the bus and messing with him. I talked to his teachers and put up with it for 3 weeks, and when nothing changed I finally went and talked to the Principle.
- After listening to the situation he suddenly lost his temper and “escorted” me off the campus. Before I left I toild him if he thought that parents were just going to accept the situation and walk away, he was in the wrong business.
- A week later the school called me in and apologised and told me they had terminated the Principle in question. They were obviously afraid I would litigate. The two instigators were suspended.
- This is just the tip of the iceburg. We had one school whose classes were so out of control the parents had the school shut down for a week by the police until the district could go in and re-man the operation and get things under control.
- Everything but education. Its unbelievably bad in some instances. As for the unions, they only care to make sure the teachers are covered. The kids are just fodder for the whole fight.
- Bang
Bang,
That’s terrible. No parent should ever have get litigious in order for educators to do their jobs. But this is not Utopia either.
I went to Torrey Pines Elementary School for Kindergarten. And transfered to Calvary Christian in first grade and I have to tell you that all schools have bullies public or private.
It’s been a long time since I lived in California but I am aware of just how bad some public school systems have become. Gangs, drugs, and worse have infiltrated many public schools. So after talking with a friend last night I see no really strong argument for not allowing vouchers. The good seems to outweigh the potential for evil. But evil will now have rights. And unless parents are willing to step up and assume the resposibility of educating their own children nothing will fundementally change. In you’re particular case you got involved, that’s good. I hope you kept that up and have not become complacent. Teachers help educate our kids, the rest is the responsibility of the parents. In your case the teachers were either powerless or were not doing their part.
So I totally see where a parent has a right and a duty to educate their children in a safe milieu. But a voucher from the state will only get you part way there with regard to tuition. Parents need to take a real hard look at how they spend their money. I would never be willing to trade my childs future for a new car or an overpriced home. I would get a beater, live in a shack and eat ramen noodles morning, noon and night just so I could give my children a fighting chance at the American dream.
That being said is the problem really the teachers union or is the problem bad teachers? Perhaps a bit of both. But I have met too many crappy parents too.
Bang you are right about the Government Indoctrination Centers also wrongly referred to as Public Schools. I do not use the Government Indoctrination Center lightly when I have heard parents in several states complain about the first day of school (mostly grade schools) the teacher will have all the students put all their new school supplies in a box and then she will redistribute the supplies. Telling the kids that it is unfair that some students have more than others so she makes sure everyone has the same amount. From those according to their ability to those according to their need no private property rights the group mentality socialism. Then we have Zero Tolerance which is nothing more than Zero Though for the staff at these centers. The schools are the same here in GA I am sure the schools are the same just the names of the states change. One of the reasons the schools have lost control goes back several decades when parents started suing the school districts for disciplining their child. There was nothing wrong with when a disruptive brat was hauled up to the principal’s office and given a whack on the butt or several and it was witnessed by another person. With the loss of discipline and these huge mega schools and not to mention 80 to 90% of the staff are liberals some more liberal than others and the unions that protect bad teachers (No incentive to be better) what should we expect? Then you have these schools more worried about self-esteem and diversity that teaching reading, writing, math and science.
- Well guys and gals, for my own part I don’t know that vouchers are any sort of panacea. I’m just sure of one thing. As time goes on the situation in the public school system continues to grow worse and worse.
- I have been very active in the process of my sons education, having raised him on my own since he was five. Early on it became obvious that you need to be dilegent, or the results will be anyones guess. The thing that bothers me the most is, although he is an honors student having managed to stay on course through all the “battles” over the years, how much better might he have been able to do with a decent reasonable learning atmosphere. I augment his studies here at home, but our situation is unusual since I happen to be a practising consulting engineer. The quality of a childs education should not be dependent on the circumstances of his or her parents. Thats just wrong and totally unfair. Our children depend on us, and we are letting them down miserably.
- Its a total puzzelment, and damning testimony to our national per-occupations in what we put as high priorities. I always just have to wonder what we are thinking as a people when our childrens future, the future leaders of our country, are not put first and educated in the best possible system we can devise. I don’t expect Utopia, being a very pragmatic indivisual, but some things simply make no sense, and this is one of them.
- Its a national disgrace for the best country in the world in so many other ways.
- Bang
GBA says, “and eat ramen noodles morning, noon and night just so I could give my children a fighting chance at the American dream.”
Something wrong with Ramen noodles?
I eat them, wife eats them…heck we even eat Mac and Cheese.
*grins*
Just given you a hard time GBA.
Sanity,
Yeah, but some brands are better then others. But you just can’t beat the bang for your buck.
Most of the problems in schools are caused by crappy parents. Most of the worlds problems are caused by crappy parents. Most crappy parents are the result of crappier parents. And this crappy world is a product of a very crappy history. A crappy history caused by crappy, crappy leadership. The time has come to $hitcan all leadership and allow “we the people” to run things. It can’t get much crappier, can it? Peace
Steve…. if your parents didn’t have children chances are you won’t either….
- Bang
Wow, steve seems to really have a scatological obsession!
“if your parents didn’t have children chances are you won’t either….”
BBH just put the BANG on steve.
Need to wear boots more often when steve speaks….
It gets DEEP!
Sanity,
Steve has a some serious tenacity. He gets womped but he keeps coming back. Sometimes he even gets a good one in. Hats off to that guy.
You may not dig his point of view but he is relentless! Sometimes to his own detriment and to the point of absurdity. But always relentless.
“if your parents didn’t have children chances are you won’t either….”
Let’s See…

Pr(Hp) = probability of parents having children = 1
Pr(1-Hp) = probability of parents not having children = 0
(By Law of Total Probabilities: If events a and b are mutually exlusive and collectively exaustive, then Pr(a) + Pr(b) = 1)

Pr(Hc)= Probability of having children in generation (t+1) = .8 (estimate)
Pr(Nc) Probability of not having children in generation (t+1) = .2
(once again, by law of total probabilities)
Pr(Hc|Hp) = probability of having children given parents had children.
Pr(Hc|1-Hp) = probability of having children given parents didn’t have children.
So by Bayes’ Theorem:
Pr(Hc|1-Hc) = [Pr(1-Hc|Hc)*Pr(Hc)]/[Pr(1-Hc)] = [(0)
.8)]/(0) = 0

What’d ya know? The math proves it! Steve was right! That’s it! I never again want to hear any of you liberal bashers attack steve’s intellect! He’s a smart cookie…I tell you!
(Just joshin’ Steve. I really do enjoy reading your posts!)
Sorry, I went a little overboard with the face dealies. :
One more thing…GBA, you rock!
(Imagine that, someone in here ACTUALLY promoting the concept personal responsibility and accountability rather than blaming and attacking others for society’s ills.)
Watch this…here comes the onslaught.
Aids is relentless too, GBA……
You’re a funny guy, CB! You oughta take that act on the road!
Forest Hunter,
You wrote “Aids is relentless too”
What is that supposed to mean?
Where are you going with this statement?
Do you have AIDS and are trying to raise awareness?
I think his point is that just being relentless isn’t always a good thing. Relentlessly ignorant can be as deadly as a disease.
CB Howell,
I appreciate the compliment.
I have my moments.
But that being said I need to tell you that I have probably said as many stupid things as I have smart things here and Sister Toldjah can vouch for me on this one.
But thanks for the shout out. I appreciate it.
Severian,
Nice extrapolation on FH’s behalf. That sounds pretty reasonable. And in Steves’ case he does corner himself often. But he has chutzpah. I admire his tenacity even though at times I just can’t agree with him because he is so radical in his thoughts.
I thought my remark was obvious and less said was better. Severian explained it perfectly.
steve’s obdurate position on the same old Bash Bush meme, perhaps you view as tenacious. IMO, there are better words to describe people who match his frozen stance.
Forest Hunter,
Yes but in all honesty the reciprocal stance is just as ignorant.
I find it amazing when liberals start talking about how they promote personal responsiblity and accountability. It is just laughable. These are the people who have overseen the greatest wealth redistribution plan in human history. Some personal responsiblity. These the guys that have an open door on our jails, some accountability. Let’s set Tookie Free why don’t we. I am certain that abortion on demand is about responsbility and accountability. /Laugh GBA’s point is not about welfare, it is about protecting the status quo. It is not in the best interest of anyones children to continue under the present education system. I go back to my original point. If you home school you should not have to pay a tax to an education system that you receive no benefit from. If you pay for private education why should you pay for taxes going to schools you don’t use. Now private schooling or home schooling would not be so popular if the present education system we had was held to some “accountability”, which it hasn’t been until lately. It is absurdity to believe that this is about some new form of Republican Welfare. I understand that you all on the left think you have the market cornered on the issue of welfare, but you are blinded by your own desire to do good works. – Lorica
Ohhh GBA I do not stand corrected with my original statement about your judging others. I guess it was the statement about ditch diggers that bothered me most. You see in this country we need Heavy Equipment operators, and skilled labor to make those machines, and keep them running. We need forward thinking individuals, not people who believe that the reality they live in is as good as it will get. You Sir are stuck in a rut.
Lorica,
“it is about protecting the status quo”
Oh so you like latin. I got one for you.
Nullum Prandium Gratum!
If you studied in latin class you would know what this means. It’s a concept as old as the Romans.
It means ” NO FREE LUNCH! ”
So stop kidding yourself. If you don’t like welfare then don’t take welfare money. It’s that simple.
We have no shortage of heavy equipment operators either. Nor a shortage of mechanics. We do have a shortage of factory jobs having sent those jobs to China.
And if you home school you still have to test every year. So you need to pay anyway. We all have to pay. That’s called reality… that’s life. Get over yourself. Even parents who send their kids to private school have to pay.
If they start handing out welfare vouchers I will be the first in line to get some of that free money. I have already put away for my sons entire college education and he’s only 2 years old. So it would be nothing but gravy for me.
Lorica,
BTW
“The world needs ditchdiggers too”
That’s a line from CaddyShack.
Judge Smails says it to Danny Noonan when Danny is on his jock about getting a scholarship but he does not have the grades to earn one.
Get a sense of humor pal.
I have a sense of humor and I understand reality. Reality is that the current education system in this country is in very bad shape. Now you can continue going along with the status quo like your every post has reiterated or you can start using some of your intellect to come up with creative ideas to initiate some change. I am not asking for a “free lunch”, what I want is “Payment upon Services Rendered”. It is a concept as old as Adam. If anyone is getting a free lunch it is the present education system. It needs some competition. How do you think we have as many great colleges and universities that this country enjoys?? They competed for quality students and the money that brings those students to, Northwestern or MIT to name a couple. Yes I understand that what I am saying is never going to happen, but something needs to change. What is it going to take to shake up the administrations of these school districts to make them realize that education in this country is not in as good of shape as it was 50 years ago??
Ohhh and thanks for reminding me of my lack of latin. You see I went to a PUBLIC school where they didn’t teach such “nonsense” as latin. Also thanks for proving my point about what is lacking in public education. – Lorica
What if you look at this from a business point of view and aa a consumer…..
If the business (Public School System) does not meet your needs or you are having to much trouble with it, should you not have the ability to goto a competitor and give them your business?
Example:
COMCAST: Customer service is non-existent, I have to much trouble dealing with them. Once they have my dollar they could care less about me as a customer. Thier programming is not what I want.
DISH NETWORK (SATELLITE):
I decide I have had enough of the attitude and way Comcast does business so I decide to switch to another service provider that will fulfill the needs i have as a comsumer.
This is only an example of what I am talking about.
Should we not have the same ability to do the same for public schools and education?
What rights should we have as comsumers?
What would it be called if you could only get your service say from only ONE provider? All over the US, you could only have Comcast and not have anything else?
Would that be considered a monopoly?
Wouldn’t that be considered illegal?
So why do we tolerate it in our education?
Shouldn’t we as consumers have the ability to choose if we do not like the product or service (public schools)?
Perhaps the curren stagnate public schools will become better when there is finally competition. The same way with business. If you have competition, it brings out better prices of products and companies look for ways to compete against each other for customers.
I also do not think we should pay for a service we do not get.
Should I have ot pay for comcast if I do not have a TV or use a different service?
Then why should I have to pay for schools through taxes if I own a house, if I have no children or I Home School or send my children to private school?
Something does not strike me as quite right with that.
“Don’t throw out the baby with the bath water” or who wants government funded(vouchers) madrasah’s? The only way to survival is a united system of individual rights and communal responsibilities. Try religious anarchy. Peace
No thanks, I think we will stick with our system of Capitalism.
When I think of religous anarchy (an oxymoron), I think of Islam and its extremists.
Islam = religon
Extremists = anarchy
Sanity…I love the analogy of Comcast vs. Dish. Great point. The problem however, won’t be solved by competition.
The fault in your logic is that the entire thing is based on a false assumption which is that the educational bureaucracy cares if you aren’t a customer. They get paid either way.
Further, public education is something we cannot do without. Like it or not, there are poor people in this country. Whether these people are lazy leaching scum suckers or they come from long line of hard working folks who simple haven’t caught a break makes no difference. It’s not for them. It’s for thier kids. The kids didn’t pick thier parents and shouldn’t be penalized for their parents’ actions. (or lack thereof)
Either way, it is in our best interest to make sure that these kids get at least a basic education. Where do you think these kids are going to get money when they grow up if they can’t get a job to earn it? The simple answer is from you…they’ll steal it.
So we’ll just lock them up right? Well, what’s more expensive…paying for 30-50 years of incarceration or 12 years of school? That my dear, is why EVERYONE has an interest in public education.
So what’s the solution? Accountability. Simple. Where should the blame go for the current state of affairs? Us. Simple. We as a society have to demand that ALL of our public servants do thier jobs. No free passes if you a Dem or Rep, Cons. or Liberal.
I don’t care what your political preference is. If you’re an American it your duty to get involved…not just sit around on blog pages and bitch about the situation. For heavens’ sake, take a look at voter turnout..what’s the national average? It’s got to be below 35%. All of you, last november, how many of your neighbors did you persuade to go and vote? Face it, we’re in the state we are because of how we are.
Just think, if we all spent 25% of the time we spend on blogs and dedicated it to brainstorming solutions, writing letters, and making phone calls, alot would change.
But at the end of the day, that’s what most of us are inclined to do…sit and bitch.
Until that changes…nothing will.
And again, your wrong in your understanding. Peace
Excellent Post CB.
Thanks…even blind squirrels find acorns every once and a while.
BTW…Steve, who was the understanding comment directed toward? If it was me, I’d be a little curious as to what you are taklking about…specifically.
Additionally, since this thread was originally about Hillary…I just want to make it clear…the previous 8 years of her runing the white house was more than enough for me.
Plus she doesn’t smile enough. She’s just too damn mad all the time!
