Via ABC 11:

The driver of an SUV that plowed into a group of pedestrians at UNC-Chapel Hill on Friday told police it was retribution for the treatment of Muslims around the world, according to ABC News.

It happened around noon Friday in front of Lenoir Hall on the campus, in a common area known as the Pit. Paramedics took six people to UNC Hospitals. Five had been released by Friday evening and the sixth was not expected to be admitted.

Officials say none of the people were seriously injured. Three refused treatment at the scene.

Chapel Hill police say they arrested the suspect, Mohammed Reva Taheriazar, 23, of Chapel Hill, shortly after the incident. Several witnesses were able to give police the rented Jeep Cherokee’s license plate number. Police said they would charge Taheriazar, a psychology major who graduated from UNC last semester, with several counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Link to terrorism?

Sources say Taheriazar told police he was seeking retribution for the treatment of Muslims around the world, according to ABC News justice correspondent Pierre Thomas. Taheriazar apparently told police he tried to rent the biggest SUV he could find to use in the attack.

Could this have been the catalyst?

  2. This mentality is just not good. If idiots like this guy continue to do assnine things, good muslims in this country are going to get hurt, due to blind lashing out. For a psych major you would think he would understand the laws of cause and effect alittle better. - Lorica

  5. Publishing these cartoons, at this point in time, is provocative and mean-spirited. It is un-Christian and anti-religious. The man in the SUV used viloence to make his point and his actions should be condemned and punished. This is no longer a free speech issue, not after the Rights reaction to the teacher in Colorado. The Right is quickly morphing into “all war, all the time”. Peace

  7. But Steve you are a religious anarchist. So what does it matter to you if it is un-christian or anti-religious?? It seems to me that anarchy is directly opposed to religion anyway. Anarchy = Chaos, Religion = Order is suppose to be the way it works. Not saying that it is true in every case. Steve you really should stop enabling these sort of people with the way you think and present yourself. - Lorica

  10. steve obfuscates again by saying, “Again, lets speak about violent Christians and the Armaggedonists.”

stevie-wonder without having anything to add, without having anything more to debate or shed light on this, decides to play the shift the blame game and move the topic from what happened to what he wants to talk about.

Here is something that you should try to understand, PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

Try giving more than simplistic one-liners and add to the discussion. If you cannot do that, then really you are wasting everyones time.

  12. I might agree, but I do so hate letting people get away with moronic ramblings, even when you can see how outlandish and rediculous they are…

Something draws me to correct them.

I guess I feel the same way about kids in schools. Just cause your frustrated by them, you don’t quit trying to educate them, you don’t pass them up the next grade hoping somewhere they will finally get an education from someone. I don’t give those that fail to understand or refuse to understand a passing grade.

  14. In a “perfect” world, this Islamic terrorist, which is what this former student is, would be removed from the US criminal justice system, and treated like the Islamic terrorist he is. That means, ship his sorry butt down to Guantanamo, interrogate and try him there. Or better yet, treat him as the Geneva Convention allows with respect to non-uniformed combatants, and summarily execute him. If we are to win this war, we need to get serious, and start realizing that people who engage in terrorist acts are just that, soldiers of our enemy who are not operating under the laws of armed conflict and not wearing a uniform. This is not a problem that should EVER make its way into the US court system, the problem should be solved in accordance with the Geneva Conventions the same way we applied them during WWII.

But what will happen is that he’ll get routed through the courts, and get a free lawyer, and eventually probably be found not guilty by reason of insanity, and wind up walking in a few years after he’s supposedly “cured.” Which does nothing to discourage anyone else thinking of similar actions. Now, if they put his head on a pike in the middle of the pit, that would be more appropriate. Peace thru superior firepower.

  15. Could it be possible that the Rightwing Christians are incorrect in their worldview? Peace

    Comment by steve @ 3/5/2006 - 12:23 pm

  16. I am trying to figure how “right-wing Christians” got into this. This was donr by a Muslim at the University of North Carolina. UNC is a STATE university, not a religious institution. Confusion at UNC being in a town called Chapel Hill? I think that the person used the word “obfuscation” was right. There are not millions of Christians calling for world-wide jihad and for blood to flow freely. There are a handful of kooks calling themselves “Christian” who are routinely denounced by most other Christians. Unlike the the vast number of Muslims who refuse to denounce the actions of the jihadists.

  17. That is a very good point Sev. In WWII the French Partisans were executed on the spot usually for such actions. They were considered spies of a known enemy, and that is how we need to start looking at the allies of AQ that do stupid things like this. - Lorica

  18. jRob, bush invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. He is currently threatening to invade Iran and Syria. Could any of that be the reason that the Arabs are in the streets all upset? Then some fool insults all of the Moslems with crude cartoons. Looks very much like we’re trying to pick a fight. Peace

  20. You did not answer my question, how did right wing Christians come into this? This was an attempted murder over cartoons…period. The paper that ran the one in question was the newspaper of the University of North Carolina. Not Asbury College, not Wake Forest hell it was not even Bob Jones University. It was, once more, a STATE university. S-T-A-T-E.
There is no justification for for this act or any of the violent acts committed by these thugs.
Now if these people want to “bring the war to our soil” they damn well better not get upset when they get treated as foreign combatants on US soil. Translation:it will be open season on them.

  24. No the the jackass (donkey) is being replaced by the chicken for the democrat symbol.

What slogans can we think of for them?

Bird of a feather flock together?

Unlike Kennedys car, we are water proof and can float?

The only eggs we lay are in our nests?

Chickens of the world UNITE, together we will be peckers for a better world!

The early bird gets the worm?

Vote for us! We can lay eggs, the staple of a good morning breakfast. We will scratch up atxes and on top of that, we are really good peckers!
