A JV baseball coach has been cought trying to stir up Latino students against the proposed illegal immigration bill. Via the Houston Chronicle (emphasis added):
Rudy Rios was stripped of his duties as junior varsity baseball coach at Chavez High School last week after using a district copying machine to make a flier encouraging Latino students to attend a rally protesting restrictions on illegal immigration.
Rios, who still retains his duties as an English-as-a-second-language teacher, was copying and distributing a flier that read: “We gots 2 stay together and protest against the new law that wants 2 be passed against all immigrants. We gots 2 show the U.S. that they aint (expletive) with out us (sic),” according to district officials.
“Mr. Rios used taxpayer-funded school equipment to copy and distribute to children an offensive statement,” said Houston Independent School District spokesman Terry Abbott. “The principal exercised his authority to remove Mr. Rios as junior varsity baseball coach, and it certainly was an appropriate decision.”
What I’m curious about is why this guy didn’t get suspended altogether. For obvious reasons, of course (trying to stir up trouble amongst students that could lead to major problems) but also as an ESL teacher, shouldn’t he – like – KNOW and write English as it’s supposed to be written, rather than how he did above?
I know – I’m nitpicking ![]()

This guy is an ESL teacher?
Gads….
He’s just a doppy baseball coach. Peace
Chavez High School? Is that Caesar or Hugo?
Hmm… it would seem that the US “gots 2″ be better off “with out” people like this guy.
Do we really “gots 2″ let idiots like that teach children in the (expletive) US?
I’m guessing if it were a white teacher passing out flyers expressing the opposing viewpoint, he wouldn’t have been allowed to retain his teaching duties.
Just to let everyone know the true facts of the story. Rudy Rios did not ‘make’ the flyer, nor did (I) distribute them, encouraged students to walk out of school, nor did I have any input into what was said in the flyer. A young student, who I don’t even know came to me and asked me to make 30 copies of the flyer in question. As a teacher, my job is not to encourage, persuade, or urge any of the students to think one way or another. My job is to inform them of the pros and cons of each action that they might pursue. Once they make their minds up, it is my job to support them! I supported the students who walked out as well as the students who did not. Let’s always get both sides of the story before we judge others. I am sure that that is what anyone of you would want, as I do.
