Returning to her camp near Baghdad, Sgt. 1st Class Juanita Wilson’s last supply run turned out very differently than the other missions in her seven-month tour in Iraq.
“We got everything we needed and [were] on our way back … about an hour from our camp … that’s when something happened to our vehicle,” recounted Wilson, a full-time member of the Army Reserve whose unit deployed to Iraq in March of 2004.
That ’something’ was an improvised explosive device (IED) that wounded her and several members of her convoy in August of 2004. The explosion cost Wilson her left hand and some of her arm.

Wilson was a unit supply specialist with the 411th Engineer Battalion, an Army Reserve unit from Hilo, Hawaii. The unit had been building roads and infrastructure such as schools around Iraq since its deployment.
While recuperating at Walter Reed, one option Wilson would not consider was leaving the Army, despite the long road to recovery that lay ahead of her.
“From Day One, my decision was, ‘I’m not getting out,’” Wilson said, adding that she still has things she wants to accomplish in the military. “My support channel has been there for me and I’d like to give that back to the soldiers of the future.”
Wilson underwent a year of both occupational and physical therapy before a medical review board cleared her for further service. She explained that an individual isn’t even considered to appear before the board until at least a year of therapy.
“They want to see if you’re really ready to return, which is a good thing,” Wilson said. “It’s really great at Walter Reed. They don’t want you to leave there with the idea that ‘nobody helped me or asked me what I wanted to do.’”
Wilson, originally from Clarksdale, Miss., now lives in Maryland and works at Walter Reed. The 32-year-old volunteers as a peer visitor for other soldiers in situations similar to hers.

Now, nearly two years after the IED attack in Iraq and after therapy, numerous operations and a new prosthetic hand, Wilson made good on her decision to stay in the Army. She and 37 others re-enlisted in a ceremony held on the steps of the U.S. Capitol on April 6. Wilson wasn’t the only veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom who re-enlisted, nor was she the only wounded soldier among them.
Wilson understands the circumstances that have drawn media attention to her, but doesn’t consider herself to be that special.
“I hope to represent every soldier in the Army Reserve — and my daughter — in a positive way. If you put your feet in Iraq or Afghanistan, your service is just as meaningful and just as appreciated,” Wilson said.
Here’s to you, Sgt. 1st Class Wilson, and thank you for your continuing service to our country and to your fellow military members.

Isn’t she a class act?! This story really hit home with me and she is such a perfect example of the outstanding men and women we have serving our country.
Thank you Sgt. 1st Class Wilson!!!!
Heroes (and heroines) come in all varieties.
- These are the sort of heart-warming stories you’ll never see in the Chicken left-wing press. The Left thinks Character, and love of home, family, country and flag, are dirty words.
- In my book, one Ms Wilson is worth a room full of Dean’s, Reids, sKerry’s, Hellerys, and Polosis.
- Everyone who fights for their country should be honored with a memorial in Washington, and all of the anti-American Liberals that have worked so hard to undermine our President, and supprt our enemies should be given their own “Wall of shame” there also for everyone to see.
- Bang

Thanks Bang I was looking for the right words and you said it all I would just add Honor and “Good Moral” Character.

But you should bow your head in shame for even mentioning those bed wetting booger eating sniveling liberal pieces of feces in the same sentence as Sgt. 1st Class Juanita Wilson.
That evil Fox News again. Bunch of warmongerers. They are with the capitalists and Zionists. There’s no truth to anything they write.
/end daily Steve dosage
Well said Bang
- Along the lines of “Just another day in the Feckless world of the Liberal lemmings”, I just watched Dem and Republican spokes people on FOX, answering the question: “What do you think America should do about the Iran problem.”?
- Four times the moderator asked the Dem lady the same thing, and four times her answer was “The American people do not trust the Bush administration and polls show blah blah blah”, while the Republican stated over and over that we need to take action if the UN security concile fails to act.
- She finally broke down and said: “We need to stand firm and speak with a single voice becauser its such a serious problem, but the American people don’t trust Bush etc etc etc….”
- Its should be crystal clear to everyone in America by now that the Democrats/Liberals have no clue as to what should be done concerning any of the most important issues we face. They don’t even believe we’re in a WOT. They’re pre-occupied with welfare give-aways, uncontrolled abortion on demand, and subverting everything the Bush administration is trying to do to protect and safeguard America. All obstrution, all the time. They are trying to sell America from an empty cart. No plan, no message, no direction.
- The American mainstream is not going to change horses in midstream for one that may get them killed or drowned crossing the rapids of world danger. Thats a stupid idea, but when you have no ideas of your own it seems thats the best the left can come up with. A losing approach which will gain them yet another defeat at the ballot box.
- I would have liked to ask the Dembulb lady “When do you plan on halting this stupid partisan attack on Bush and begin “speaking with one firm voice”? the Democrats/Liberals don’t give a damn about anything or anyone but getting back in power, even to the point of openly supporting our sworn ememies, so I wouldn’t hold my beath thinking they’re going to get any character any time soon.

GOD bless her! She’s a Hero!
Thank you for this story of a remarkable lady. Have a very Happy Easter.
Sgt. 1st Class Juanita Wilson,
I just wanted to say thank you for so graciously risking your life and limb (literally) serving our country and protecting both the grateful and the less-than-grateful citizens of this unmatched nation of freedom of ours. I felt honored to read about how in the account of your injury, your concern was not for yourself or your own serious injuries, but for your fellow soldiers. This truly exemplifies the spirit of our military and the grateful citizens that our military serves. I’m not a military person, but I salute you readily for the service you have already rendered and for any future service you elect to render to our nation. Thank you again Sgt. 1st Class Juanita Wilson.
