Tuesday open thread – and a little sports chitchat

The controversy continues to grow over that mysterious substance Detroit Tigers pitcher Kenny Rogers had on his pitching hand in game 2 of the World Series Sunday night. Sports Illustrated has more photos of Rogers’ pitching hand from that night, as well as photos of it from game 3 of the ACLS on October 13 as well as a July 20th game against the White Sox. Rogers maintains that what he wiped off of his hand Sunday night was dirt.

Do you think it was dirt? Cardinals coach Tony La Russa doesn’t think so.

Game 3 of the 1-1 series will be played tonight in St. Louis.

ST reader Mwalimu Daudi’s Dallas Cowboys lost last night to the New York Giants 36-22. Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said of the game:

“I’m ashamed to put a team out there playing like that,” Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said. “They out-everything-ed us. It was a very poor performance.”

He’ll be saying the same thing this coming Sunday, after the Cats whip up on T.O. and co. at Panthers stadium in Charlotte. We love cowboys here, but not the The Cowboys. <):) (and that’s my very lame attempt at trash talking!)

I’m involved in another NBA Fantasy League this year – my fourth one in a row – and our draft was last night. Here were my picks (not in order of when they were picked):

S. Nash (Pho – PG)
J. Smith (Atl – SG,SF)
M. Peterson (Tor – SG,SF)
PF T. Duncan (SA – PF,C)
B. Miller (Sac – C)
E. Okafor (Cha – PF,C)
C. Butler (Was – SF)
L. Ridnour (Sea – PG)
N. Krstic (NJ – PF,C)
R. Alston (Hou – PG)

I think I have a decent team, especially considering I didn’t really start researching until the last couple of days :D My main accomplishment, I think, was snagging Tim Duncan, who is good in two slots (center and power forward). I drafted 6th, and was shocked I was able to get him.

The Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes are off to a rocky start, with a 3-4-2 record. Ah well :( No matter what happens this season, though, ‘Canes fans will always savor this moment.

Man, Libertarian candidate Thomas Rankin is thanking his lucky stars he was afflicted by MS and is wheelchair-bound, otherwise, Rep. Barbara Cubin (R) would’ve kicked his ass. Or, that’s essentially what Cubin told Rankin after yesterday’s debate.

I don’t know if threatening disabled candidates for Congress with physical harm is “Wyoming values”. Such boorish cowardice isn’t really acceptable behavior anywhere in this world, as Rankin notes:

“The best response Barbara Cubin could give would be a resignation” he said. “Nothing less than that would satisfy me.

“She is not the type of person Wyoming residents want representing them” he said.

I certainly hope the folks on the page are outraged that a Member of Congress would threaten a man with MS.

      ST,

You think the Canes are having trouble?? Try imagining what us Flyer fans are going through. They’re playing like an expansion team. :(

Even my fantasy hockey team is in last place. You’d think as the league commissioner I’d figure out a way to rig the game or something… :)

    4. Great White Rat says:

Meanwhile the NYT is speculating on who will chair an important House committee if the Dems take over the House:

Two candidates whom Ms. Pelosi is said to be considering for Intelligence Committee chairman are Representatives Alcee L. Hastings of Florida and Silvestre Reyes of Texas, both of whom currently serve on the panel.

The selection of Mr. Hastings, who is black, would help Ms. Pelosi shore up support from the powerful Congressional Black Caucus. But he has a checkered past, having been impeached and removed from a federal judgeship in 1989 on a bribery charge. Some Democrats fear that installing him in so sensitive a position would only invite Republican charges of weak Democratic leadership on national security matters.

Let me get this straight…Hastings was guilty of accepting bribes, and removed from office (by a vote of 413-3, as I recall, so this was as bipartisan a vote as you can get). And with this track record, Pelosi is thinking of putting him in charge of security oversight? It’s a good thing he didn’t commit armed robbery, or she’d be pushing him for a cabinet position.

And as for inviting charges that the Dems are weak on national security – with a handful of exceptions, that’s already been established.

I’m a kindred spirit to most on this board:) I also love sports discussions and write a weekly sports column for a local newspaper. As for your NBA fantasy team, Duncan and Nash are as proven as you’re going to get, although Nash’s age is a slight worry. Smith, Peterson and Okafor could be big stars for you, especially if EO can stay healthy. The rest would make a good NBA roster in RL, not just fantasy. Good luck:).

My fantasy football team won, I’m 4-3 now.

      The Giants won!! WOO HOO!!!!!!

The Rangers are off to a so so start, we’ll see how they pan out.

I think the Canes will be alright. They just have to get a few details ironed out!

I am really pulling for the Tigers to win, but anyone who thinks that Rogers had “dirt” on his hand, is just kidding themselves. I was very disappointed by that whole episode. It’s over though, so let’s go on to game three!!

    7. NC Cop says:

Oh and as a side note, S.T.

The Panthers are going down when the Giants come to town!! :d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d

      That’s a little trash talk……just a little.

    8. forest hunter says:

GWR: Don’t forget, it is the NYT. Truth be damned as long as mullets have a happy wrapper……..if it’s true that she’s considering Hasting as a legitimate candidate, one might wonder what meds she’s on or off. But no wonder why the dhimmicrats leadership on national security matters is non-existent, unless we’re speaking about enemies of America.

    9. Mwalimu Daudi says:

ST reader Mwalimu Daudi’s Dallas Cowboys lost last night to the New York Giants 36-22.

Rest assured, we are gearing up our lawyers for a recount. We just want to make sure all points in last night’s game were actually, and that a touchdown or two was not overlooked in the rush to judgement.

After all, the game was played in Dallas which is in Texas. Texas is a southern state nowhere near Pennsylvania, whose capital is Harrisburg. And “Harrisburg” sounds like Kathleen Harris who stole the 2000 election.

A coincidence? I think not! More likely a Halliburton conspiracy.

    10. Leslie says:

To put it mildly, Hastings would be a ridiculous choice for chairman. I would suspect there are enough moderate Democrats who would balk at him, so I don’t think it’s gonna happen . . . If you have Duncan and Nash on your fantasy team, you are on your way . . . Kenny Rogers pitched better after he washed his hands than before, so what’s the fuss about? . . . It is the Giants’ assigned role in the NFL to lose to the Panthers on demand.

    11. NC Cop says:

Damn you, Mwalimu, you’ve figured it out!!! But there’s more, you don’t understand. Just walk away…..you hear me? Just walk away……..

Celebs Who Claim They’re Green but Guzzle Gas

      Stupidest response:

      George Clooney

On the ground: George favors a Tango, an electric car that gets a whopping 135 miles to the charge.
In the air: Los Angeles/Tokyo, 5500 miles in a private jet.

Gas guzzled: 7,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Electric shocker: Even with his super-saver Tango, he’ll have to drive over 57 oceans — Pacific Oceans to break even.

So George says: Clooney’s rep, publicist Stan Rosenfield, tells TMZ, “You clearly have no understanding of certain people’s need for private transport,” and points out that Clooney often has “no control” over his travel schedule.

Yeah, George has noooo control over how he gets anywhere. He has no say at all, we tell him when and what to do….

      If you believe that…..

Maybe it’s just me, but I really can’t stand the guy. He just seems so…pompous.

      Other things in the news……..

      Los Alamos Security Breach Probed
Feds Are Investigating Apparent Breach Of Classified Info At Nation’s Top Nuclear Lab

A drug raid on a the home of a scientist at the Los Alamos nuclear weapons laboratory in New Mexico turned up what appeared to be classified documents taken from the facility, the FBI said.

      ….

Even though Los Alamos is under new management, Danielle Brian, executive director of the watchdog group Project on Government Oversight, said the lab has not done much to clean up its act.

“Los Alamos has always seemed to be rewarded for its screw-ups” Brian said. “We’re waiting with bated breath to see if anything has changed.”

The idea that police found classified documents at a home where a drug sting was being conducted is disturbing, she said.

“The problem is when you actually have those materials that are supposed to be protected inside the lab and you find them outside the lab in the hands of criminals that should worry everybody” Brian said.

Take your pick, celebrity hypocrites (do as I say not as I do) or nulcear secrets being found out of secure areas in the hands of criminals….

Doesn’t say, and probably never will, but I would be interested in knowing what classified documents were found in that house.

    13. LOL NC – the Cats are gonna make mincemeat out of Eli ;)
