Duke U. student alleges Sunday rape

Keep your eye out on this story:

DURHAM – Durham police are investigating allegations that a Duke University student was raped at an off-campus party on Gattis Street around 3 a.m. Sunday.

More than 50 people attended a party over the weekend on Gattis Street, a duplex where several male Duke students live, according to Durham police. Neighbors told the (Raleigh) News & Observer Sunday afternoon that a large number of cars were parked along the street, and loud music blared from the rowdy party.

An 18-year-old woman said she was raped in a bathroom of the residence around 3 a.m., according to a Durham police news release.

Police had not charged anyone late Sunday in connection with the allegations but released a description of a suspect: a black male, in his late teens or early 20s, about 6-feet-1-inch tall and wearing a black do-rag, a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans, according to the news release.

In story after story about this alleged incident, I couldn’t find the race of the woman making the allegations or the race of the alleged rapist until I ran across the link above, which lists Jessica Rocha from the Raleigh News and Observer as the writer. However, at the R N&O website’s link, here’s the description:

Police had not charged anyone but released a description of a suspect. The man is described as being in his late teens or early 20s, about 6-foot-1 and wearing a black do-rag, a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans, according to a police news release.

I don’t know if the race of the alleged attacker is being left out on purpose, or if it’s because there is some conflicting information on it. The incident report doesn’t note the race of the alleged attacker or the woman making the allegations. The woman who has alleged that this happened is a Duke student, but it’s unclear if the accused is, even though the article notes that “several Duke students” live at the house where the alleged incident supposedly took place.

If this case involves a black suspect and a white alleged victim, it will be very noteworthy to study how the MSM covers this, as opposed to how they have the Duke lacrosse case.
