A little trip down memory lane (some links via Liestoppers):
3/27/06: Duke community members speak out against reported incident, University’s response (emphasis added):
Durham, NC (CSTV U-WIRE) — More than 250 protesters attended two demonstrations Saturday night and Sunday morning in front of the residence where three members of the men’s lacrosse team allegedly raped a local woman.
Organizers at the candlelight vigil and the “wake-up call” at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd., said the demonstrations were acts of support for the black exotic dancer, who was allegedly raped, sodomized and strangled by three white members of the team.
Both protests-which attracted Duke faculty, students and employees, as well as concerned citizens and neighbors-moved to 1103 Urban St., a second house rented by members of the lacrosse team.
Residents never emerged from either of the houses during Saturday’s or Sunday’s demonstration.
“The students need to realize they live in a community, and people are going to talk back if they do something, or potentially do something, that is disrespectful to women,” said Faulkner Fox, a visiting instructor in the English department and one of the organizers of the candlelight vigil.
Vigil participants lined the sidewalks, holding signs that read “Real men don’t protect rapists,” chanting “shame” in front of one of the lacrosse team’s houses and singing, “This Little Light of Mine.”
During the vigil, the Buchanan Boulevard house was seemingly empty, with lights off and shades drawn.
Participants then moved to the Urban Street residence. Several said that within minutes of their arrival, lights were shut off. They added that they saw figures move behind the drawn blinds.
Some of the vigil participants said the only adequate response to the alleged assault was to expel every student at the party. Others called for Duke to start the eviction process for the three lacrosse captains that live at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.
Freshman Jamie Bell said at the vigil she was appalled by the alleged actions. “This is an example of how some in the Duke community do not respect Durham,” she said. “They think they are above the law.”
At Sunday morning’s demonstration, protesters pounded pots and pans in front of the lacrosse team’s residences, as well as Provost Peter Lange’s house on Markham Avenue.

Protesters, who ranged in age from infants to the elderly, banged on trash bins, water jugs and empty beer cans. One protester used a sled and a half-full champagne bottle.
“There is a sense that Duke students need to be protected from Durham, but rapes are happening off East Campus at the hands of Duke students,” said Manju Rajendran, an organizer of the event. “We are here to break the silence around sexual assault and violence.”
Signs read “You can’t rape and run” and “It’s Sunday morning, time to confess.” The protesters left the signs on the front steps of the Buchanan Boulevard residence.
The crowd yelled, “Where are their parents?” and called for the lacrosse team’s head coach Mike Pressler to be fired. Some wanted the University to force the group to testify.
The protesters then moved to Lange’s residence. After about 10 minutes of loud demonstration, the provost came outside wearing a Duke hat and T-shirt.
Here is part one of the “Potbangers” protest. Part two is here.

Where are the apologies, “Potbangers”?? Group of 88?
Apologies? Them?? Come on, ST…be serious. These are liberals you’re talking about. These are people who are transparently self-righteous, totally persuaded they’re far smarter than the rest of us simple folk, and only tenuously connected to reality. If the facts show them to be wrong, in their minds that could only mean the whole truth isn’t known yet. Admitting they’re wrong – on anything – simply isn’t in their programming.
Liberals are like Wile E. Coyote. They’re convinced they’re super-geniuses, even while every one of their ideas, plans, and causes blows up in their faces.
Great White Rat is right on the money. NOBODY has made an effort to apologize for this injustice to these young men and they aren’t going to. Being
LIBERAL means never having to say you’re sorry even though sane rational people know your stand is irrational. !!!!!
Our friends on the left have at least had the good sense to shut up for once; good sense since apologies were never forthcoming!
The problem for the left is that they wanted the accusations to be true; it would prove how wicked we evil white men (especially with money) really are.
But think about what that means: to have wanted the accusations to be true, they had to also have wanted Crystal Mangum to have been brutally raped. I’m guessing that they never realized that, liberals not exactly being famous for thinking things through, but for their wishes (can we accept their continual bleating, including after we found out about the DNA evidence, as evidence of wishes?) to have been borne out, they had to have wanted Miss Mangum to have been an actual rape victim.
Nobody on the left really cared for “the accuser” in the first place. She was a single mother, whose choice to be a single mother meant that she was living in poverty; it doesn’t fit the liberated feminist ideal for a woman to choose to be a single mother in poverty, because they see only the Murphy Brown ideal — forgetting that Murphy Brown was a fictional character.
Crystal Mangum demonstrates the falsity of the liberal, feminist ideal. She was sexually liberated, which so many of our liberal female blogesses celebrate, and not tied down to any man, but it meant that she was rearing a child without a father and in squalor. She was a heroine when she was forced to support herself as a stripper; it became a bit seedier when everybody figured out that she was a prostitute.¹
The feminism espoused by our friends on the left yields such results. Oh, not in every case, certainly, and they always have the secular sacrament of abortion to tidy up any unfortunate ‘problems’ that may crop up, on their way to being Liberated Career Women.
But for every Liberated Career Woman, making partner in a prestigious law firm, or CEO of a major company, for every smartly dressed successful in business woman out there, how many Crystal Mangums are there out there, women working at Seven/Eleven for $7.00 an hour, women working in laundromats and grocery stores, in video rental stores, in shopping malls or in [horrors!] WalMart? How many, like Miss Mangum, wound up resorting to selling the only thing they really had, themselves?
The feminism of Pandagon is founded on illusion. The women in that mindset can be anything they wish, powerful, unmarried if they choose, live well with or without a man, and with or without children, while forgetting that the world their ideological forebears created was one in which one person’s income was no longer sufficient, in many cases, to support a family, or even onesself.
The proud, successful career woman of the Pandagonistae did not get where she is alone, of course. She has built on what her ideological predecessors created. But the world that was created was a world in which women were simply expected to work outside the home — and that changed the dynamics of the labor supply to the extent that it now usually takes two adult earners to support a family. The feminist ideal of the Pandagonistae is of the top ten percent — and that’s a woman standing on the backs of her sisters who make far less.
Why should such successful feminists, already standing on the backs of those less fortunate, who are less fortunate due to the very things they advocate, care if it required than Miss Mangum actually have been raped to achieve simply another political objective?

¹ – To my knowledge, it has never been publicly acknowledged that Miss Mangum is a prostitute. But the DNA tests indicated the presence of “genetic material” in her body and on her clothes from five different men, none of whom were on the Duke lacrosse team. Most people are able to add 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1, in a period of time shorter than bathing or changing her underwear, and draw their own conclusions.
Too often liberals never stop to consider the downsides of their policies and philosophies. They only see the Utopian ideal, what they wish was true, and ignore the cruel meat hook realities of the world at large.
Spot on, Sev and Dana. Being a liberal means never being accountable for your actions – or their consequences.
