The Politico reports on the possibility of a summer entry into the Republican race for the presidential nomination.
C’mon, Fred. Either you want to run or you don’t. Shouldn’t he know by now?
The Nashville City Paper reports that certain folks are crawling out of the woodwork to try and find some dirt on Thompsona - already. I had a hard time getting that link to load, but Daily Pundit has some snippets from the article.
Related: Captain Ed blogs on the NYT’s write-up on Fred Thompson and notes that it’s mostly fair, with one exception: the discussion of Fred’s personal life.

Goodness Dear. Alittle patience for the man.
This is a pretty big decision. - Lorica

I read the NYT piece, and I agree: it was fair, but there was no need for the cheestastic stuff about Fred’s personal life.
Personally, I’d love to see Brother Fred get into the race. He’d certainly liven things up.

I hope he runs; he seems like an excellent choice.

He is the best head of the D.A’s office Law and Order has ever had, I love him on that show.
Does anyone know what his stand on ILLEGALS is?
I know he’d be tuff on terror but as I stated on the other bog on the rally my guy has GOT TO PUT A STOP TO THIS CONSTANT NON-STOP FLOW OF ILLEGALS INTO THE U.S.

Immigration. From his Paul Harvey editorial (linked at my blog)
I think its time for a little plain talk to the leaders of Mexico. Something like:
Hey guys, you’re our friends and neighbors and we love you but it’s time you had a little dose of reality. A sovereign nation loses that status if it cannot secure its own borders and we are going to do whatever is necessary to do so, although our policies won’t be as harsh as yours are along your southern border. And criticizing the U.S. for alternately doing too much and too little to stop your illegal activities is not going to set too well with Americans of good will who are trying to figure a way out of the mess that your and our open borders policy has already created.
My friends, it’s also time for a little introspection. Since we all agree that improving Mexico’s economy will help with the illegal-immigration problem, you might want to consider your own left-of -center policies. For example, nationalized industries are not known for enhancing economic growth. Just a thought. But here’s something even more to the point that you might want to think about: What does it say about the leadership of a country when that country’s economy and politics are dependent upon the exportation of its own citizens?
From his interview with Chris Wallace on Fox:
We woke up one day after years of neglect and apparently discovered that we have somewhere between 12 million and 20 million illegal aliens in this country. So it became an impossible situation to deal with. I mean, there’s really no good solution. So what do you do? You have to start over. Well, I’m concerned about the next 12 million or 20 million. So that’s why enforcement, and enforcement at the border, has to be primary.
I think most people feel disillusioned after 1986 when we had this deal offered to them before, and now we’re insisting that, you know, we solve the security problem first, and then we’ll talk about what to do with regard to other things – certainly no amnesty or nothing blanket like that.
Good enough for you?
