San Francisco officially begins its “agenda of food justice”

Your quote of the day, my dear readers (via):

San Francisco’s board of supervisors has voted, by a veto-proof margin, to ban most of McDonald’s Happy Meals as they are now served in the restaurants.

The measure will make San Francisco the first major city in the country to forbid restaurants from offering a free toy with meals that contain more than set levels of calories, sugar and fat.

The ordinance would also require restaurants to provide fruits and vegetables with all meals for children that come with toys.

“We’re part of a movement that is moving forward an agenda of food justice,” said Supervisor Eric Mar, who sponsored the measure. “From San Francisco to New York City, the epidemic of childhood obesity in this country is making our kids sick, particularly kids from low income neighborhoods, at an alarming rate. It’s a survival issue and a day-to-day issue.”

Doug Powers puts things in perspective:

In the City by the Bay, if you want to roller skate naked down Castro Street wearing a phallic-symbol hat and snorting an eight-ball off a transgender hooker’s chest while underage kids run behind you handing out free heroin needles, condoms and coupons to the grand opening of the neighborhood’s newest bathhouse, that’s your right as a free citizen of the United States. But if you want to put a Buzz Lightyear toy in the same box with a hamburger and fries and sell it, you’re outta line, mister!

And God forbid that toy be in the shape of a military figure

Because it’s all about the “priorities” – didntcha know? 8-|

Unhappy Meal

  1. Do these people live on earth?

  2. thomas mc donnell says:

this is america the land of individual freedom. i remember when i was in college in the sixties and we were constantly told those conservatives would take away our freedom away. i see there must be a hell of a lot of conservatives in san francisco.

  3. Zippy says:

But it’s certainly ok to purchase Sarah Lee Turtle Pies for 7 bucks a pop and 3 South African pineapples (quite miniature too) @ 5 bucks a pop with food stamps (as witnessed today).

How people spend THEIR money at McDonald’s is THEIR business. How they spend foodstamps should be OUR business.

  4. Steve Hussein Skubinna says:

Any possibility that SF might ever be placed under adult supervision?

Nah, forget it. The entire state needs adult supervision.

  5. Phineas says:

I plan to have a Happy Meal this weekend, just to send a much-needed message (the single finger kind) to the San Francisco Board of Stuporvisors.

They turned the best city in the West into a garbage heap, and this is their priority. Schmucks. :-l

  6. Sefton says:

McDonalds should tell them to pound sand and go about business as usual.
If the city presses it, start closing restaurants in the San Fran area and rebuild those lost units out of state. And encourage other businesses to relocate while they’re at it.
California’s digging their own grave anyway – might as well get out now.

  7. Dave B says:

These are the idiots that voted for a deceased Democrat over a living Republican, a career politician who says or bends over to anyone that will vote for him as Governor and has bankrupted the state before over someone that could get their state back on their feet. These are the same morons that voted for another career politician that never saw a spending/taxing bill she didn’t salivate over while she overtly shows disdain on our fighting men and women on a daily basis. California and their voters have become a joke. Billions in debt, unemployment through the roof, illegals sucking the life blood from taxpaying citizens of the state while at the same time campaigning for liberal wingnuts… and they’ll look on with horror when the rest of the nation tells them to go f..k themselves when they ask for bailouts.

  8. Proud Infidel says:

San Francisco is like a giant bowl of granola. Get rid of the fruits and nuts, and all you’ll have left is FLAKES!!

  9. Jo says:

California, the granola state–full of nuts, fruits and flakes. They are obviously all smoking something out there if they re-elect Barbara “Please call me Senator” Boxer and MoonBAT Jerry Brown. But they WILL get a bailout. They will be deemed too big to fail.

  10. Patricia says:

I will never spend any money in California and especially San Francisco!!! It’s too bad such a beautiful state has been ruined!!!

There are lots of very beautiful places in the US that are governed better!!!

  11. Dina says:

I love the photo. We need to start a new campaign- Save the Happy Meal!! It is becoming an endangered species.:d

  12. MarkJ says:

    Tomorrow’s headlines…today!

“San Francisco slides into Pacific. Pacific spits it back.”

  13. Paul says:

There’s a new name for San Francisco – Babylon! Banning Happy Meals while letting everything else go is hypocritical and stupid !

  14. BUCK JOHNSON says:

I thought conservatives liked “local rule”. The locals made a rule, which makes sense to them. And for those who want to boycott S.F., if you are so close-minded and simple..well enough said.

McDonald’s, as the state of Arizona, has drawn a giant bulls-eye from the Progressive left, albit, for different reasons.

The Orwellian leftist enforcers of “Correct Speak” and “Correct Acts” have descended upon America’s freedoms with jackbooted vengeance (I understand jackboots are all the rage in parts of San Fran!).

McDoald’s has caved before and I suspect they will cave again…

  17. did you ever notice how the “protecters of our rights” are always banning things.

  18. Kate says:

My question to S. F. Why don’t you deal with the parents who BUY the so called unhealthy food products for their children?

If you don’t allow McDonald’s to sell toy ridden Happy Meals…why are you allowing the sale of other things that cause more problems for society…say alcohol. Or take it to that next step and say no unhealthy food will be sold, period. Why stop at child nutrition if you don’t think parents are making the right choices? Why target only one sector of the total economy? That’s discrimination.

  19. Marcia says:

    Hmmm. Blackmarket Happy Meals

  20. HoughPoe says:

McDonald’s should just give everyone who buys a Happy Meal a ‘voucher’ for a toy. Once you have the hamburger, drive around again through the drive through and redeem your voucher.

  21. Nazti Pelosi says:

The bigger question is what should be done when the board of supervisors requires everyone to wear their underwear on the outside for ‘health’ reasons. Comply with that too?

  22. Carlos says:

    To Buck Johnson:

It’s not about “local rule”, it’s about having the freedom to make choices ourselves, and every time the jackbooted left forces a loss of choice on us, whether at the federal, regional, state or local level, we are all the poorer.

But you wouldn’t know about that because you believe in “the greater good.”

  23. MissJean says:

It’s the local franchise owners who will cave. They have no choice in an environment like that. But the question is whether SFers will support the local McDonald’s if the adhere to the new law, or if the local owners will be closing shop.

  24. Steve Hussein Skubinna says:

Carlos, I was going to respond to “Buck,” but decided it wasn’t worth it, since he won’t be back. He’s just a drive by. Sidle up, fling his poo, and off he goes into the night, to snicker with the rest of the Kos Kids about how he showed those dumb wingnuts at ST’s.

Hurr hurr hurrr. Snort, snert, hunh hunh.

They really think they’re smarter than anyone else.

  25. Carlos says:

Yeah, I know, Steve, but sometimes I just can’t help myself, just in case some 13-year old skips by and happens to read these things.

Wishful thinking maybe, but just like most elitist plans it COULD happen. It’s just the thought that counts, right?

  26. BUCK JOHNSON says:

What I don’t understand is that SF made a a local decision based on what they like. What is worng with that? Once I was on a community organizing group that took away liquor license from locale stores who were abusing their license. Same theory. The community decided what they wanted in their community. I realize that this is a slippery slope, but let SF decide on what SF wants to do.
