OK, help needed.

I bought the lovely Mrs Pico (and the kids as well) a 42 inch plasma high-def television. We needed a new set because the old one, about twelve years old, was dying.

Now, I had told Mrs Pico that we ought not to consider a new set until after Christmas, when the prices drop, but the salesman at best Buy gave me a 30 day price guarantee, which takes care of that problem.

Now, my problem is: there is a 48″ by 36″ by 10″ wrapped box, standing upright to the 36″ height, beside the Christmas tree! The kids are surely going to be guessing what is in the box, and I need a good lie with which to distract them!

I need ideas, people, and I need them now!

If they’ve guessed, no one has said so yet. I just brought it in last night. Right now, the best story possibility I’ve got is that it’s a computer center that i have to assemble, but I don’t know if they’d buy that I got that for my wife.

I never liked Best Buy previously, because of a store in Lexington, Kentucky that was really bad, but the one I use now (in Allentown, Pennsylvania) is pretty good: I’ve had no problems at all, and we’ve bought several things there.

I won’t detail the shady marketing Best Buy pulls, but I would bet that the price goes down 32 days after you purchased your TV.

Well, like I said, I’ve never had any real problems with Best Buy.

I don’t particularly like all of the rebate campaigns, because manufacturers know that about half of rebate coupons are never returned (a practice of which I am guilty myself), but that’s on the consumer, not the retailer.

Since this is an open thread… Let me tell you that I’ve done over 3 hours of research on the subject of Post World War 2 Germany.

While I’ve found lots of links referencing the 10 year occupation (here’s one)

And lots of links talking about lots of occupations (listing over 50) in the last century and those links never mentioned how many soldiers died in each of the occupations they all only seemed to characterize the insurgencies as opposed to giving raw numbers. The characterizations of post World War 2 germany were mixed. There were articles in Life magazine and New York Times suggesting how difficult the occupation is and characterizing the occupation as a failure or will be a failure.

While I saw the many articles that talked about the insurgency of the German’s never seemed to materialize… I believe it is possible (although no article ever gave a number) that 10,000 of our soldiers died over a 10 year period due to the fact that we had 10 times as many soldiers in Germany after WW2 than Iraq. We had over a million soldiers there.

I heard the number from what I believed as a reputable source and nothing disputes what I’ve said. There are articles that talk about how many soldiers we had there and there are articles that talk about the major failings of the occupation and how difficult life was for the soldiers. There are even articles that talk about how Germany never received money for the rebuilding or “Marshall Plan” until 1949 after our Congress didn’t even get through the plan until 1947.

After looking over the list of 50 occupations in this last century by various countries, I BELIEVE EVEN stronger that your ASSERTIONS about the occupation of Iraq being such a failure or your incessant need to talk about W’s “mistakes” only show a lack of perspective on your part.

Thank you for asking. I took the challenge seriously and will at least not mention how many soldiers died in post World War 2 Germnay until I can verify what I heard was correct (even though nothing disputes it).
