Would you let someone’s political affiliation stop you from dating them?

Got into a discussion with some friends about that this weekend. One of them, a staunch conservative, couldn’t believe that I actually thought that marrying a liberal would be cool. LOL. I explained that it didn’t really matter to me what side of the aisle the person was on, just as long as he worshipped me.

*GRIN* 😆

So, would you or would you not? Please explain why.

It would absolutely stop me. I argue with too many liberals now. I certainly would not want that conflict when I got home. It is a matter of a peaceful home is a “Home Sweet, Home”. I love a good discussion, but as we see in the replies of so many liberals here, that is a thing that just doesn’t seem to happen much. Not that it can’t or won’t after all love does cover a multitude of sins, so to speak.

As far as “worshipping” you, well I just don’t see how that would be a problem. *WOOT *WOOT Suck-up alert going off 😆

I’m a believer in the “princess treatment”. I give long footrubs and like to hug.

However, I’m not sure how many men (if conservatives) would be able to treat a woman (who is liberal) as a princess. Therefore, the reverse – I’m not sure how many men (if liberals) would be able to treat a woman (who is conservative) as a princess.

So… what I’m saying is I’m not sure a liberal man would be able to worship you.

This is only my “feeling” after being in a relationship with a liberal woman once in 1995 AND having a liberal woman who WAS interested in me find out I was conservative and start questioning my morality and whatnot to me and others.

My experience is that both women I lost respect for very quickly because they let disagreements turn into questions and attacks on my character. For example: In the 1995 example the woman (Caroline) was asking me how I could support a party who was going to cut Medicare 270 Billion. Honest to God! This relationship lasted 2 weeks and it was towards the end of the 5 month long lie that the media did. I quickly determined that it wouldn’t work because I was trying to soft speak it and say, “the facts that I see is that it isn’t a cut but an increase of 7% per year for 7 years – more than 49% compounded”. I tried to soft speak everything including the attacks on Reagan that she did accusing him of being negligent on AIDS. I said “there is evidence that in 1986 Reagan spent lots of money on AIDS research and it coincided with America’s awareness of the issue.”

For every one of over 20 issues she raised she called into question my honesty on the facts that I was raising. These were facts I learned after listening to Rush and reading American Spectator and National Review (I had subscriptions). She called into question the honesty of these magazines and Rush and couldn’t believe that I a smart computer person would be so duped.

These are the reasons why I said above that I don’t think a liberal could treat a conservative as a princess. While they may not think you are evil, they may call into qustion your intelligence, morality, and honesty.

While as a conservative, I know a liberal has “good intentions”, I couldn’t treat a liberal as a princess for extended periods if I was under attack or having to explain myself.

My wife was a (gasp!) Democrat when I met and married her. Although I accepted it and never would tell her how to vote, she slowly came around to being a Republican….although to be fair, I’m not sure how committed she was to the Dems or how committed she is to the Republican Party, either.

She’s not one to stay current on the news and things like that, but she manages to make up her own mind and ask questions, too.

BTW, Full disclosure here…

My best friend is a woman. She is independant. I never know what she thinks on any issue until she tells me. There was only 2 arguments that we’ve had in the last 3 years.

The first one was when she thought all of the firemen were stupid for going into the twin towers that wasn’t it obvious that the building were going to fall. I said it wasn’t obvious and that the steel columns that held up the building weren’t thought by everyone that they’d melt like they did. While Jet fuel burns hotter than the 1500 degrees needed, it’d also take time for that amount of steel to get up to temperature. I just felt that the remarks were harsh to the brave men/women who went to save people and their spouses.

The second one was when she thought that you couldn’t have a grocery store or construction company in Sacramento, CA without the employees being unionized. I let her know that it wasn’t against the law to own and operate a construction company or grocery store in Sacramento without being unionized. She was adamant because she has a friend of over 25 years who is in the construction field. But I gave examples of companies that were grocery stores and construction companies that are in business in town.

Anyways.. there will always be disagreements but neither of us think of the other as not well intentioned or stupid. We both think that the other is intelligent and has good values.

It’s not a daily or weekly disagreement on the facts…

My husband and I agree on pretty much everything when it comes to politics, but we disagree about EVERYTHING when it comes to religion. He’s a devote Catholic and I’m a recovering Catholic and now atheist. We are raising our kids in the church and there has been some pretty intense negotiations on some subjects, but we have been able to come of agreement.

So, my point is that I think you can have a marital relationship w/someone who has different beliefs. You just have to be prepared to work things out.

Already have, and I ensure domestic tranquility by treating her like a princess Our discussions tend to be rather civil, provided I stay on my toes and point out her ad hominem attacks, her strawmen, her red herrings, and other fallacies, *and* I have to keep the discussion on topic. I’ve gotten really good at saying, “You’re straying off topic, dear.”

(Using that tactic also makes sure I win most of them. Heh.)

BTW, I don’t think she deliberately uses logical fallacies in her arguments; she didn’t know they were invalid arguments way back when. I’ve noticed they’re getting fewer and fewer, especially since I let myself get *very* angry at her ad hominem arguments.

It’s fine in theory, but political attitudes often are connected to basic personality traits. I’m afraid that many of today’s “liberals” (a) are people who are very concerned with doing what is expected of them by the “cool kids” and (b) look at things through a purely emotional (as opposed to a rational) lens.

So, a liberal may well turn out to be a status obsessive who will want you to govern all aspects of your life according to what somebody thinks is “in”…and may also be difficult to have a rational conversation with–not just about politics, but about anything.

Not always true, of course, but the younger the liberal, the higher the odds he will fit this profile.

I once dumped a girl because, while we were driving and the original version of “Layla” came on, she wondered aloud why they remade thesong, because what she thought was the orignial (the slow, acoustic one that was popular on MTV at the time) was so much better. I damn near tossed her out on the freeway for that one. Ok, there was more to the disolution of the relationship than that, but it really was the final straw. One might say I have standards…

So, yes. Must Be Conservative isn’t on the agenda, but Must Not Be Liberal is.

Goes without saying, I don’t date many other teachers…

I think it would depend upon how strongly held their misguided views were. In my experience, most people who are on the left just allow themselves to be led around by the outdated (formerly know as “mainstream”) media…and do little if any thinking for themselves. 😆

Enjoyed reading the responses posted here … it looks like with a couple of exceptions, most of you wouldn’t (or do not) have a problem with dating/marrying someone who disagrees with you about politics.

Something I thought about last night that I wish I’d have thought to add to my post: even when you are on the same political page, does it matter if that person doesn’t show near the interest in politics that you do? I’ve often thought that it would be wonderful to meet someone who not only shared similar political views with me but who also shared my passion for politics in general. But OTOH, having just one political news junkie in the house may be the way to go – that would mean that there would be at least one of us would be sane (and I don’t mean me! LOL)

A: No. Not at all. While I’d like to find someone as interested in home improvement as I so that we can work on projects together, politics is an individual reading and involvement type of thing. Though I do like discussions about politics. I once discussed politics for 9 hours straight with an African American friend of mine. He told me later that he changed to Republican and attributed that to our discussion.

Disclaimer: It’s not about Republican good – Democrat bad, It’s about how you mostly align yourself. If you listen to 95% of Democrats they do refer to government as the solution and provider for groups such as women and african americans as opposed to individual rights and responsibilities.

Sane? I balance out the politics with hard work and friends. Spending all day Saturday and Sunday sweating doing yard work and tiling and woodwork and whatnot is therapuetic. Just need a woman to do that with and then give an hour foot massage!

I’m well past the dating stage having been married for over 33 years, but there’s no way I’d date someone of the opposite political affiliation. Unless she was beautiful…and intellectually challenging….and a delight to be with…oh, who am I kidding? Politics has nothing to do with love. (See Mary Maitlan and James Carville for proof. You can’t get much more extreme than that.)

of course they should worship you. That’s a given.

but really the issue isnt a huge one as long as the two people can agree to respect each others views, regardless of which arena they disagreee in.

I have seen bigger fights over the toliet paper rolls and toothpaste tubes then politics.

mutual respect will counter all manner of ideological diversity.

And without mutual respect even people of the same politcal stripe will be at odds about something.

Having some experience with this, I actually think it’s easier (and likely more common) for a conservative to consider dating a liberal than for a liberal to consider dating a conservative.

Personally, I’ve found liberals to be much more closed minded when it comes to accepting the ideology of others. People can dispute that if they like, but that’s my own experience talking.

But, aside from all that, I suppose the “princess treatment” would work, too. LOL

– The problems I find in trying to date Liberals, as has already been mentioned by others, is the extreme emotional feelings they tend to bring to their pov’s, and intolorance of differing idea’s, an unwillingness to even discuss or listen to your positions. – On a personal note, a gal I know absolutely hates politics. She’ll let me babble about my latest haggle with the donkeys for just so long and then she demands to be shown proper “princess” attention for her patience. Sometimes a two way conversation on the issues would be nice, but theres nothing wrong with a “girly girl” who dosen’t care for politics. Man doesn’t thrive on elections alone, so to speak. But in a serious relationship, including marraige, there are so many important issues that need to be worked out in harmony together, being too polarized on your political views would just add another log to the potential difficulties/disagreements/hard feelings side of the ledger.

– As mentioned earlier, getting along together in all the ups and downs of a relationship isn’t always easy, and mutual respect and at least a basic agreement on your “worldview” and values will certaily help smooth out the bumps in the road. After all you can only make love 22 hours a day….. the rest of the time you have to actually communicate….

I just had a recent experience over this very subject recently. Met a woman liked her. She found out I was a conservative, and she put the Kibosh on the relationship. Isn’t open to any form of dating and will only enter into polite conversation with me now. Heck I was thinking this was the one, guess not. All because I am a conservative. She won’t even think about dating me, I was thinking it was possible that we could make a go of it, but nooooo. – Lorica

No doubt the liberal is “well intentioned” but they can’t recognize that conservaties are also “well intentioned” but have different ideas as solutions for problems. We think our ideas create less suffering, more equality, are based in facts and history.

As long as liberals tend to have the mental disease think that conservatives are “evil”, relationships between conservatives and liberals will tend to be that way. If things changed so that they didn’t view US that way I’d consider dating a liberal.

BTW Lorica, I’m on eharmony and was asked by a match what my politics are. I said centrist even though in her profile it said very liberal. She came back with “we are not a good match” Me thinks liberals need to surround themselves ith agreers these days. Too much alternative media going on out there.

What exactly is it that women gained from the “sexual revolution”? They had sex before, during, and after the 60’s. What is it that I gained? Is abortion what I am to take away from the sexual revolution? You think that is what it was all about? How about equal pay for equal work. How about admittance into colleges that shunned women…to me those were gains. Abortion was a step backward. We asked to be treated equally, yet we asked for exceptions to the rules!

it is a common fallacy that a womans right to abortion is the lynch pin fo the whole civil rights movement for women.

There was so much more gained that focusing on the most contraversal aspect as your litmus is short sighted.

regardless the SD abortion ban will not be the shot heard round the world that ends abortion, assuming it actually passes constitutional muster, which I dont think it will

Here’s another side of the equation. I recently dated a woman who is as devoutly anti-democrat as I am and the political discussions became sterile. Sure, we high-fived each other in our devastating take-downs and knowledge of the issues, but when all was said and done, it seemed rather an empty effort. I prefer having reasoned discussions where an alternative view can be considered. But I don’t think that is possible with todays liberals. So I have become comfortable in my aloneness.

I know what people like to say, that opposites attract, but for the most part you do have to have much in common otherwise you will always be at odds with each other.

Having some differences will make for a better learning experience for both partners, but if those differences are extremes, especially in politics and how strongly you feel about it, then I highly doubt it will work.

Take for example, do you think there is any kind of chance for two people who believe very strongly on ther views and positions on Abortion, but….

One is Pro-Abortion…
The Other is Anti-Abortion…

Because of the of thier views, positions on those views, and how much tey believe in those views, I highly doubt they would even talk to each other, let alone date.

I guess it boils down to how strongly both people believe in thier position and views in politics. If they are very strong beliefs, I do not think it would work at all.

Let’s do abortion. The concept behind abortion is reproductive rights, not sex. The principal was that a women should have the right to control her own body. And what she chose to do with her body was no one else’s business. If she chose an abortion that was her choice and she had the right to privacy in that choice. Now comes the Catholic Church to say that all abortion is murder. A silly position because nobody except fanatics believe that life begins at conception and is viable immediately. Leave it to the Intelligent Design, mental midgets to push that non-science. The Church always uses emotion rather than intellect. This issue has become tedious. Peace

Karl, I totally agree. When did women’s rights boil down to abortion. Also, it is time to stop using Roe improperly. It was intended only to allow abortions up to the 1st 2 trimesters. Not after that. It was not the intent of the SCOTUS to allow them after that time and it should not be allowed now. Also, this is a state’s rights issue. It should be put to a vote whether a state wants abortion or not. And for all the Libs out there that don’t agree, just look at all the tourism that would create for the Liberal states out there. – Lorica

Steve I believe that you are describing liberals not “The Church” if you try to have a serious debate with a liberal they change directions and are totally illogical they use feelings instead of logic. Having a serious debate on political issues with a liberal is like describing supply chain management to a five-year-old.
