Friday/Weekend open thread

Hey ya’ll. Sorry I’ve been AWOL this afternoon. I’ve been busy sharpening my debating skills at a political forum I post at. In fact, I’d like to invite any of you who are fans of political message boards to visit it as well. It’s called The Bully Pulpit. It’s not like a DU or any goofy place like that. Some pretty serious debates happen there, but that’s not to say that some people over there can’t get goofy sometimes. In fact, that happens frequently The moderators at the forum are fair and let the conversation flow but don’t tolerate personal attacks coming from either side (public figures are fair game – members are not), nor trolling, nor spamming.

It seems to me that since Barry Oh! won the election that there are more liberals posting at the forum now than ever before, so we could use some more solid conservatives on our side to fight the good fight. If you happen to decide to visit and start commenting there, shoot me an email so I’ll know! First time commenters are put on moderated status there for a few days so the mods can determine whether or not the person is legit or just there to cause trouble.

(Update – 7:51 PM: I meant to note what my screen name was on the board there. It’s “Zeewoman” in case you want to check out what I’m writing … to make sure I’m being a good girl, of course ).

Ok – time for a little rock and roll to start the weekend off a good note.

Here’s something you probably won’t see leading the news on your local MSM outlet: Early voting begins in Iraqi provincial elections

Here’s a woman who voted only hours after giving birth: “It’s my duty to vote for a better Iraq”.

And an army Sergeant: “We have come here to vote as a kind of defiance to the terrorists”.

This time, the Sunnis are buying into the voting. It’s another sign that Iraq has a good chance of becoming a multi-sectarian, or even a secular, democracy. For the sake of people like that new mother and the sergeant, I pray it does.

Again, they’re proudly waving their purple fingers. Who would have thought six years ago that by 2008 Iraq’s elections would be more honest than ours? At least until ACORN opens a chapter in Baghdad…

Oh yes….and thank you, president Bush, without whom none of this great Hope ™ and Change ™ would have been possible.

You have probably read that Mayor Bloomers-in-a-knot, at the behest of his city’s chief health eedjut, wants to cut our intake of salt to a maximum of 1500 milligrams. The benefits the two claim are amazing!

Especially since actual, you know, science shows that is probably the minimum daily requirement –

“The lowest sodium intakes — the 1500 mg/day that the New York health department says everyone should be eating — were associated with an 80% higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared with those consuming the highest salt diets. The lowest salt intakes were also associated with a 24% higher risk of all-cause mortality.”

Teqjack, along the same lines, here in Massachusetts, Gov. Patrick wants to start charging a 5% sales tax on Alcohol (even though there is already an 8% sins tax), Soda, and fruit juices that contain less than 50% real juice, and food items that the State deems has too much sugar.

Oooh…lookee here. Another Obama appointee who skipped out on paying taxes: Tax issues emerge in Daschle nomination

Former Sen. Tom Daschle, picked by President Barack Obama to lead his health reform efforts, recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest

He makes Geithner look honest. The new Treasury Secretary only cheated the government out of $34,000 in taxes.

Here’s what I want to know: since Joe Biden has told us that paying high taxes is patriotic, can we now label these deadbeats as unpatriotic? The next time they whimper about us questioning their patriotism, how about if we haul out their 1040s?

On the other hand, maybe they were both listening to Harry Reid back when he claimed paying taxes in America is “voluntary”.

Here’s one more item regarding the Iraqi elections, which were much more peaceful and successful than one might have expected.

President Obama has praised the elections as an important step forward for the country. Here’s part of the report:

Mr Obama praised the technical assistance by the United Nations and other organisations to Iraq’s electoral commission, which he said “performed professionally under difficult circumstances.”

Anyone want to guess who he did not praise? If you guessed the U.S. military, go to the head of the class.

Yeah, according to the Dalai Bama, it’s the UN that’s responsible for the fact that Iraq can now hold elections more honest and fair than we have in, say, Chicago. The courage and sacrifice of the American soldiers had nothing to do with it, it appears.

I’m nauseated by such disrespect for our troops, but it’s not unexpected from the first president in more than half a century to spurn the inaugural ball featuring our Medal of Honor winners. Even Bill Clinton, who openly loathed the military, had the good grace to show respect to those heroes.
