BBC: Call to ‘shut down’ [Google] Street View

This is interesting. On the one hand, I can sympathize with the complainers: it is a little unnerving to think “Google may be watching.” On the other, there’s no expectation of privacy for activities that take place in a public place — at least in the US.

On the third hand ( ), as a writer, this kind of situation has always interested me as a set up for the plot of a crime drama.

But Anthony, some activities caught on Google Street View don’t occur in “public places” – there have been instances where Street View has been able to zoom to windows on people’s homes, and in some cases in their backyards where children’s swingsets were clearly visible – clearly private property.
