LA City Council votes to ban most official travel, future contracts, to AZ
Far left (coast) lunacy strikes again:
The Los Angeles City Council, protesting Arizona’s tough crackdown on illegal immigration, voted Wednesday to ban most city travel to Arizona and future contracts with companies in that state.
Council members argued that a new Arizona law, which will make it a state crime to lack immigration papers and requires police to determine whether people they stop are in the country illegally, would lead to racial profiling and discrimination. The law takes effect July 23.
During a morning-long debate on the resolution, council members compared Arizona’s action to those of Nazi Germany and the beginning of the Holocaust, as well as the internment and deportation of Japanese Americans during World War II.
“Los Angeles is the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard,” said Councilman Ed Reyes, one of the resolution’s sponsors. “As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be … deported, no questions asked. That is not American.”
It’s also a flat out lie. Shame on him, and any other prominent politico/pundit – or “hunger striker” (update on that here) – who demagogues the issue with outrageous falsehoods like that one, which only serve to further inflame the already over-inflamed who believe that this is all about “race.”
As to how Arizona should response to this nonsense? Gateway Pundit has a suggestion:
Maybe the LA council members forgot who supplies the city with electricity. 44% to 50% of the city’s electricity comes from neighboring states including Arizona. The Hoover Dam in Arizona has been providing electricity for Los Angeles since 1936. Los Angeles receives about 6% of its electricity from hydropower, most coming from Hoover Dam in Arizona. Another estimate says approximately 10-12 percent of the city’s electricity comes from hydroelectric power plants, with Hoover Dam, located along the Colorado River in Arizona, making up the bulk of this supply.
Los Angeles Department of Power and Water (LADWP) currently generates 50 percent of its electricity from coal power plants (another estimate says 44%) located in Nevada, Arizona and Utah making it one of the dirtiest publicly owned utilities in the country.
Arizona needs to show those idiots who the boss is.
Turn out their lights.
It’s not going to happen, of course, but it sure is tempting, all things considered.
And as if what the LA City Council did wasn’t enough, check this out:
Parents in Illinois are outraged over a move by a local high school to scrap its girls basketball team’s trip to Arizona over the Grand Canyon State’s new immigration law.
The Highland Park High School varsity basketball team has been selling cookies for months to raise money for a tournament in Arizona..
Now, after winning their first conference title in 26 years, the girls are being denied the opportunity to play in the tournament over safety concerns and because the trip “would not be aligned” with the school’s “beliefs and values,” Assistant Superintendent Suzan Hebson told the Chicago Tribune.
Hebson said Arizona is off-limits, at least until it’s more clear how the state’s new law, which makes it a crime to be in the country illegally, will be enforced.
“We would want to ensure that all of our students had the opportunity to be included and be safe and be able to enjoy the experience,” Hebson told the Tribune about the tournament. “We wouldn’t necessarily be able to guarantee that.”
Parents said there was no vote or consultation regarding the decision, which they called confusing, especially since they say no players on the team are illegal immigrants.
“Safety concerns” my a**. This was all about political correctness, nothing more, at the expense of the girls basketball team.
Left Coast Pundit watched Fox and Friends this morning where student reps from the basketball team were interviewed. Here’s a brief recap:
Kalie Greenberg the ‘unofficial’ basketball team spokesman for Illinois Highland Park High School varsity basketball Giants and a fellow teammate showed up on Fox and Friends to discuss the situation. Kalie Greenberg made a great point that students from her school had visited communist China and the administrators didn’t have a problem with that.
Another pathetic example of the leftwing’s demagoguery and lies gone wild. We should support our high school athletes, not use them as pawns for political agendas.
Amen. And we should also support states who act in the best interest of legal residents by making sure both their lives and the public resources available to them are protected against abuse by illegal immigrants, especially those involved in drug trafficking and the kidnapping/smuggling of both legals and illegals alike.
The Arizona tourism industry is taking a big hit. A vast majority of Americans (raaacists!) support either various aspects of the Arizona immigration law, or all of it. Learn more on how you can help the state here.
