Your thoughts on O’Donnell beating Castle in Delaware

It’s turn the tables morning at the ST blog. Instead of yours truly giving her opinion on the story about the Tea Party/Palin-backed Christine O’Donnell defeating “establishment” Republican Rep. Mike Castle in the Delaware Senate primary (for the seat formerly held by Joe Biden), I’m asking for yours.

A few questions:

1) Are you happy about the upset?
2) Do you think O’Donnell has a chance of winning in November?
3) Assuming she doesn’t win, do you think there will be much of a difference between her Democrat opponent (Chris Coons) and Castle?

1- Yes, no more RINOs even if it means we lose to DimLibs. If we can’t do it all at once, we will do it election by election.

2- Always a chance. If the PubParty does not help her, that is something else we will fix after Nov2 and us little people will have to chip in $.

I think O’Donnell’s win is SUPER! The Republican establishment are acting like spoiled brats after not getting their way. I would say that they would rather lose the general election than back her. Stupid, stupid move on their part. They need to put their big boy pants on and get over it. Monetary backing or not, I think the lady has a chance and I salute her win.

I honestly don’t know what her chances are. I can say that if the RNC keeps whining about not supporting her and losing a chance at controlling the Senate that she absolutely will lose. The Republicans need to come together NOW or it will be too late. While the dems are busy putting people like Rangel back in power, we’re voting in fresh, young perspective who haven’t been corrupted by their lifetime in politics. You tell me which is better.

I think people who think there would be no difference between Castle and Coons—if they exist—are living in another world. The analytical mistake is to see “bad” as an arbitrary line beyond which there’s no gradations, just an undifferentiated miasma of “bad.” But that’s silly. Barney Franks, for example, is objectively worse than Mike Castle. Castle had a 52% lifetime average ACU rating, and that is dismal, but it is stellar compared to what Coons will get. Castle may have voted against us some of the time, but Coons will vote against us virtually all of the time.

This is not a state that we are going to lose no matter who we nominate; in that situation, sure, we have nothing to lose, so nominate Goldwater, make a statement. And this is not a state where we are going to win no matter who we nominate, so we do not have the freedom of picking whatever candidate strikes us as best. We could have won Delaware, but we threw it away for no reason.

This is a state that voted 62% for Obama. Delaware voted for Kerry, Gore, and Clinton both times. The last time a Republican other than Mike Castle won a statewide election there was Bill Roth—who would not pass tea party scrutiny—in 1994, and I don’t know when the last time one won a first statewide election (as opposed to reelection, with all the advantages of incumbency). The last Republican elected governor of Delaware was Castle—in 1984. So the idea that this a red state in waiting, ready to flip if we would just nominate a real conservative—who are we kidding?

Bingo, NC Cop. If a Congressman or Senator has been around as long as Castle, it’s time to leave. Problem is the Dem’s are least likely to vote the Rangels, Pelosis and Reids out like we have, so we need as strong of candidates as possible to defeat them in the general elections.

I’m very happy about the win; however, I’m very much saddened by the reaction of many prominent republicans–it shows that the GOP still doesn’t get it. Unfortunately, there is still very much a private club attitude in Washington which needs to be taken down.

I very much agree with the things people like Mark Levin and Glenn Beck were saying, that it’s better to vote for O’Donnell and remain true to your principles than to vote for Castle, just because he’s a “sure thing.” I try to point out to friends, what if it were Christine O’Donnell vs. Arlen Spector?

As for her chances in November, I think a lot of people are going to be surprised. Turnouts for just the primaries have been amazing for Republicans. I think once November arrives, the Republican turnouts for the elections will be just as amazing. And if the GOP finally pulls that stick out of its butt, so much the better with the added support.

Would he be better than Coons? Of course. Winning on some conservative points is better than winning on none. However, we’re getting to the point where “good enough” is not good enough. We need someone with a strong conservative mindset, especially when it comes to taxes and the economy, or we will continue the slide towards economic collapse.

I think it’s fantastic! The established, entrenched GOP’ers are really acting like little “brats”. Like Nikki Haley in South Carolina, Christine over came alot of BS, a lot of it from within the GOP and the Conservative wings.

I am “really” dissapointed in the reactions last night from Dana Perino and Karl Rove on Hannity. The only Ads the dems need to run between now and November is of our “own” people, crucifying her.

And to think the NRSCC is now saying that they aren’t going to put “ANY” money into the State is just unbeliveable and real petty on their part. Will they “EVER” get the message? I’m starting to doubt it. They just don’t get it.

These jerks are trying to invoke Bill Buckley: “most conservative, best electable”. What about Ronaldus Magamus: “Never speak ill of another Republican”.

Never let it be said that they can’t “completely blow” a election. One that they should walk away with. Idiots!

GW was portrayed as a “conservative” by the MSM, but (other than war policy) was difficult to picture as anything but a socialist-lite.

And, with the help of a jackass Congress, look where he got us.

So my question to Simon is, are you so sure that electing Castle would have been so much better? It seems to me that would be just more of the same ol’ same ol’.

As far as the RNC goes, once they get their heads out of the jackasses’ posteriors and start listening to the people they supposedly represent by proxy, then maybe we, the people, will start thinking about supporting them again. They may not think they need our money, but it’s for darn sure they need our votes.

Just to address point 3, there is quite a difference between Coons and Castle. Coons is a self-described “Marxist with a beard,” though he’s since lost the beard. Castle by any measure is a bog-standard Northeastern moderate-liberal Republican, and his ACU rating reflects it: he voted against ObamaCare and for Cap-and-Tax. (That last was a deal-killer for me, however.)

Okay, point 1, too : I’d have been disappointed with either outcome, for each candidate stank, but for different reasons. (Castle on his voting record, O’Donnell for some serious character questions) Is the Delaware Republican Party trying to tell us that there was no one in their state –no one?– who was a better candidate than these two?

Ah well, I have my own close Senate race to worry about. Down with Boxer!

I’m very happy O’Donnell won her race. Being from New York I voted for Carl Paladino over weak kneed Lazio the Rockerfeller Republican who couldn’t come close to running against Hillary back in 2000. He was down in the polls last week and was said not to have a chance against Lazio. Now to beat Andrew Coumo who was Bill Clinton’s HUD secretary and was part of the SubPrime mortgage debacle. Of course the Lame Stream Media says Coumo is the next Governor. Let’s pray he isn’t.

I agree with you that O’Donnell is a “flawed” candidate. But this isn’t recent history. Why was she supported previously by the Delaware GOP?

The party has tolerated much worse politicans for years now. Spector, Chaffee, Collins, Snowe, Grahman the list goes on and on. Spector should have been voted out last cycle, but wasn’t. Dubya went into the State and saved his bacon, when he should have endorsed Spector’s opponent.

The “Old Guard GOP” had better jump on board with this movement, or they are going to be left standing at the station with empty bags in hand. They are proving day in and day out, that there is NOT much of a differnce between them and the dems.

Conservatives are TIRED of compromising their valuses with these jerks and getting sold out.

Mrs O’Donnell’s campaign positions are fine, but the problem is the candidate herself: to put it bluntly, she’s dishonest and she’s an idiot. Mike Castle might have been a moderate Republican, which means we didn’t get his vote on some occasions, but we did get it a decent amount of the time, while Chris Coons will be a 100% lockstep/ goosestep Democrat.

With Mike Castle, Delawareans would probably have put a Republican in the Senate; with Mrs O’Donnell, not a chance.

And the most important vote any Senator has is the vote on how to organize the chamber for the up coming session. Delaware Republicans just increased the odds that the Democrats will hold the Senate.

Just pondering some of the other aspects of this win and others by lesser knowns…
Recalling a moment when Child In Chief Obama was asked about the multiple rallies of Tea Parties in cities around the country about a year ago – the White House response was that he hadn’t even heard about it. Then not too long after that he goes out of his way to denigrate them at one of his perpetual campaign speeches with the mocking comment “you’ve got all these folks out there waving these teabags around” . . .
I wonder if he knows about the Tea Party folks now and if he’s still laughing about them?

As far as the win itself by O’Donnell, more power to her. I’m sure the GOP strategists are working mainly from that and don’t see how she can win, but as has been stated by many, the PEOPLE are voicing who they want.
This is a resurgence that both the Republican and Democrat establishments need to start understanding. We may not win them all this go ’round, but the worm is turning and the message is clear. Get on board or get the hell out of the way.

I have no problem with what she’s said, and the liberal attempt to make positions that look like Catholic orthodoxy on sexual morality sound retrograde has been particularly obnoxious. She’d make a swell candidate in another state. The problem is that she’s running as a deep red candidate in a true blue state. It won’t work, and every cent spent helping her lose is a cent that can’t be spent helping other candidates win. Just because I like her doesn’t change electoral reality.

No, some of the people are voicing who they want: the tea party and its lay affiliates (so to speak). The problem is, the tea party is a subset of Republicans, who in turn a subset of the broader electorate. And it’s the broader electorate that is “the people” for purposes of elections. We now have a true conservative candidate with zero crossover appeal in a state where only 38% of the electorate are registered Republicans (“293,000 Democrats are registered in Delaware, compared with about 183,000 Republicans“). How do you suppose that this will work out for us?

Over 100 years ago, George Washington Plunkett, the man who understood the distinction between “Honest Graft” and ethical conduct, also pointed out there is no difference between Democrats and Republicans, except on election day. Both parties worked together to create the problems we have today, and individuals in both parties have been rewarded financially and, until now, with job security. All funding originates in the House of Representatives and passing major legislation requires the use of ‘earmarks’ unrelated to the purpose of the legislation to ‘buy’ the votes of those who honestly disagree with the law.
The Declaration of Independence recognized “… mankind are more disposed to suffer while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.”
It has become painfully clear that our elected representatives are no longer listening to those who placed them in office. Legislators freely admit they do not read legislation before voting. They offer an explanation – the bills are in legalese that needs a battery of attorneys to decipher. They tell us they have to pass a law in order to see how it will work. They pass laws to control the conduct of others but exempt themselves.
I believe the ‘Tea Party Movement” is not about an individual primary or election; it is about consent of the governed. The elites in Washington, both parties, have made it clear they do not respect the values of God fearing, gun-toting, ordinary citizens. The GOP may have thought that they could co-opt the tea party movement to maintain RINOs and their comfortable status quo. They may be in for a bigger surprise than the Democrats come election day.
If the status quo continues unchallenged, and our representatives act as if we can spend our way out of our problems it will make no difference if Democrats or RINOS are elected in November. Congress has told us to pass legislation to see what happens. I think we should cast our votes for those who believe in consent of the governed and see what happens. It can’t be any worse that the 111th congress.

Hube, one of my regular visitors, and the site host of the Colossus of Rhodey, a conservative Delaware site, said on my site:

I will not be voting for O’D in the general. Nor will I vote for Coons, of course. I will be leaving the Senate section blank on my ballot.

Hube is a good, conservative Republican, and if Mrs O’Donnell can’t get his vote due to her personal issues, she’s way behind the curve in the general election.

Most certainly. As flawed as O’Donnell is, the DIABA (Democrat-In-All-But-Affiliation) Castle was not worth their dying on that hill.

That also assumes Castle would have won. Effectively, there would have been no difference, except maybe if Castle would have represented seat #51 (which, IMHO, was a bridge too far this time around). In that case, the only positive effect would be to block a couple minor Senate Dem bills because McConnell has no gumballs and because Castle would be only one of several DIABAs willing to vote for virtually anything Reid or his successor thinks of.

In the House, Mike Castle voted for crap-and-trade, and he voted for the TARP bank bailout bill. But he voted against the Porkulus Plan and ObaminableCare. We can count on Mr Castle maybe 60% of the time. We could count on Mrs O’Donnell almost 100% of the time, but she will not win, period. Perssonally I would rather not win the senate but know that our priorities are straight. If we look at a long term veiw for 2012 then I have no doubt that Obama would benifit by our winning the senate and then getting busy compromising all our princibles due to these Rino’s. In the end nothing will get done and he will be able to use this against us. If we stay with the truth of our princibles we will presevere.

Again, should the voters have used this percentage and win probability to vote against their own principles? Winning and losing aren’t the only things in life. You have to be accountable to what you believe, your values and principles – regardless of the outcome.

O’Donnell closed a 20 point gap in about 2 weeks. Overnight she got a expected bump [9-10 points]. The NRSCC must have had their collective “brains” beat in over night, with their announcement that they weren’t going to support her. They couldn’t get in front of the microphones fast enough.

Voters are sick and tired of holding their noses and pulling a lever for some RINO [even in a RINO land]. Let Christine’s opponent stand up [like the rest of the dems aren’t] and pronounce his support for HC, Crap and Tax, DADT, The Dream Act. I’ll love to see it, with the attitudes of today’s voters.

The only incumbents that are actually winning primaries are “running away” from their own President and have voted against him.

We couldn’t win the “Kennedy” seat either. There was no way possible that a Conservative Republican was going to win in NJ. Yet both of these certainties didn’t take place. Listening to O’Donnell she seems as bright as any Dem holding office currently.

My thing with Castle is, even if he won the seat, I would pay money if he would stay a Rep for as long as Jumpin’ Jim Jeffords. Especially if the Reps, with the help of God, were able to eek out a majority somehow. You know, that Dingy would be bribing Castle with any committee seat he could want if he would switch his party. That’s just politics in Washington DC. For some, Dems, it’s all about the power.

Nay say what you want, but the party bosses should be sweating bullets hoping to keep their jobs after this election season ends and the campaigns for 2012 start to fire up. These people have played this go along to get along quite long enough, it is time we took back 1st this party and then the rest of the Gov. – Lorica

As an outsider looking in, the thing about the O’Donnell upset that strikes me most is the apparent disconnect between the GOP establishment and their voters. I mean, SOMEBODY must have voted for her or she wouldn’t have won, right? All this hoopla now about how the Republicans have just lost this seat come November, smacks of the same arrogance used by the Obamacare people who shoved that down our collective throats.

So, the GOP is telling us they know what’s best for us. Who cares what we think!

It would behoove the Democrats and Republicans both to wake up and realize that the “little people” are starting to get mad, and begin putting up candidates who resonate with our voices.

Lorica, the Massachusetts election isn’t an apt comparison. If we had nominated a vulnerable firebrand like O’Donnell in MA, we’d have lost that one, too. We didn’t; we nominated a very presentable moderate who fit the mood of the electorate.

What’s more, MA happened in extraordinary circumstances that we can’t reproduce in Delaware. The Dem candidate was exceedingly weak in every possible way, and while it wasn’t exactly a single-issue election, there was a widespread belief that the election was a referendum on stopping Obamacare, an issue on which a majority of Massachusetts voters—not just Republicans—supported us. By contrast, while George scoffs at C&T, DADT, DREAM, etc., he confuses “the attitudes of today’s [conservative] voters” with the attitudes of the electorate as a whole. Democrats, who outnumber us three to two in Delaware, are perfectly happy with those Democratic proposals—as you would expect. If Coons defends them, he may make the tea party madder, but he’s not going to help us. These aren’t issues that will lead to aisle-crossing in the way that benefited Brown in MA.

No way to know if she will win in November because this has been and is going to be a very strange election year.

Castle supported cap-n-trade and was a co-sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act meant to shut down free political speech. Any marginal good he might do is negated by that. At least with Coons, you know that you’re getting a hand-me-down Marxist for an abbreviated Senate term.

Let me assure you there is no confusion on my part as to the “attitudes” of today’s “conservatives”. None. I’ve been a part of that movement for more than 40 years. I could have continued with the list of issues that voters are yanked off at. Tarp, Union Bailouts, Auto Industry, Stimulus ….. do I really need to go on?

I have never seen the “conservative attitudes” more fixated and focus, here in the land of “schmucky, the hilderbeast, and cuomo’s. But it’s NOT only the “conservatives or the republicans}. The “loons” of the demoCRAP party have lost the entire “middle” of this Country. They don’t come more “lib” than here, ‘cept san fran [piglosi territory].

Here “we” are outnumbered by 5 to 1. Try living under that “doctrine”.

We are on the “verge” of losing our Country and many people have “finally” woke up. Hopefully it’s not too late. And the GOP just “may not be up to the task”.

The only way to guarantee that Deleware voters (all voters, not just “conservative” voters) do not elect a Republican Senator is to not offer them one. Castle is not, and never was, a Republican, but a big-government career politician in bed with George Soros.

I’ve heard/read here and elsewhere that O’Donnell had baggage, that she’s dishonest, and that so-and-so doesn’t like her so that should mean something, but I haven’t seen any real particulars beyond the claim that she once went through a bankruptcy. Well, that just means she has more real-world business experience than the O!Bummer.

My position is that I’d rather lose with a winner, than win with a loser.

I would have held my nose and voted for Castle. Not so much because he stands an excellent chance of winning in November (though that too) but because he at least seems a stable person.

O’Donnell, on the other hand, is a nut. She has some major character and ethics problems:

I might not agree with them, and you might not like them, but they constitute a large fraction of the electorate. In Delaware, registered Democrats constitute a majority of the electorate. If you think those folks are ready to vote for a tea party candidate, you’re in a poor position to accuse anyone of being in denial.

At the “very least” he has lost the “middle” that put him in office. They are should be “ripe” to be harvested. I have friends who voted for this dope, that are life long dems and Union members. They can’t wait to pull a lever against him, piglosi, weed and the entire crew.

Not question their creditials as “conservatives”? I’ve had many disputes with the positions that Krystal and Barnes have taken in their Magazine and as talking heads.

The “Nuts and Sluts” tactic was “vicious” in South Carolina against Nikki Haley. Everyone had all sorts of evidence, that she was a whore and more. Neither (no less obviously) will the lefties who aren’t pissed. Lastly, let’s consider the moderate dems and independents who are upset (because Obama is exactly like we told them he would be, and yet are suffering buyer’s remorse). Even assuming that they are a statistically significant proportion of the Delaware electorate—which is tenuous given that 412,616 ballots were cast in 2008, less than the combined voter registrations of the Dems and GOP, viz. 476,000—it’s more of a leap from being frustrated to Obama to voting for a tea party candidate than you seem to allow. By definition, these are not voters with coherent, definite political philosophies, which allows them a much freer hand in tactical voting compared to liberals (who will vote lockstep for Obama in 2012 no matter how much he disappoints them) or conservatives.

Bite Me Jr. refused to enter the race and face Castle, he was the heir apparent to the seat. A unknown came in and beat Castle that, Jr didn’t have the “guts” to face.
Christine had NO money throughout the entire primary season. At the end the Tea Party threw some money at her. Since last night, she has pulled in 500,000, that she can now beat Karl Marx over the head with.
The experts haven’t been right about one damn thing so far. So why should anyone buy into their conventional thinging now?

Delaware is hardly a “brain surgery” model of politics, it only has 3 damn Counties. I fully understand it’s a “blue state”. Their polls are NO different than anywhere else in the Country for the most part.

Here is our main differences: I say the dems are demoralized and will not turn out in big numbers [no mid term election party usually does]. The blue dogs and independents are FIRMLY OUT of “camp barocks”. They either sit it out or they switch over [either way it helps O’Donnell]. The “right” are ready to break the doors down and get to the polls. The “experts” predicted a turn out of 30K last night. The actual was almost double that.

ANY WAY you want to look at it, it’s worth “throwing” money into the race on the gop’s part. Most of her money problems were resolved “last night”. All she needs now is the gop to shut up and follow Reagan’s 11th Commandment.

I have what I consider to be a big question. There is all this talk about Christine O’Donnell. What in heaven’s name do we know about the person she is running against. Why has the media neglected to cover the guy. I understand that in college he was a professed Marxist. I also understand that Senator Reid of Nevada referred to him as “his pet”.

Who is Coons? What political spectrum does he represent?
Why is O’Donnell better than Coons for Delaware and the Nation?
