Warner Todd Huston has the details:
Outrageously, a new live-action movie based on the G.I. Joe toy line might see Joe’s American soldier identity scrubbed to be replaced by membership in an “international force based in Brussels.” The news site, IGN Entertainment, a site that reports on the gaming, comics and movie industries, has the scoop on the upcoming live-action G.I. Joe movie that Paramount is launching and it is looking like the G.I. Joe that we all loved, that “real American hero” is going to be replaced with “Action Man” a member of an “international operations team.” It appears that the American soldier, a liberator and protector, isn’t a good enough role model for the execs at Paramount!
Paramount is even turning Joe’s name into an acronym adding insult to injury. Instead of just being the main character’s name, it will become G.I.J.O.E., meaning “Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity.”
[...]
Whatever the case, we have another U.S. based entertainment giant ashamed to be Americans. This is par for the course for Hollywood, sadly. It should be recalled that the last Superman movie dropped the American part of Superman’s tag line, “truth, justice, and the American way” because it had American in it, not to mention that every Iraq war movie coming out has an anti-American point of view. So, with that in mind, it is hardly surprising that G.I. Joe is doomed to be denuded of his American identity by a weak-kneed and unpatriotic Hollywood.
And let’s not forget what happened to Captain America. Not part of the entertainment industry, no, but a part of the “arts community” all the same, which obviously includes the entertainment industry.
Here’s Fox News’ report on the new “Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity.”
The Wolf at Blackfive’s blog says it best:
Hasbro representatives have said: “There are always challenges … G.I. Joe is not just a brand that represents the military, it also represents great characters,” he told AdAge.com. “We’ll weigh our options. Clearly we do a lot of work on consumer insight.”
Get a clue guys- GI Joe represents the Soldiers in kids minds; their fathers, mothers, aunts, and uncles. Brothers and sisters. This is uniquely American. You are destroying a revered brand with this crap.
Fix it.
Seconded.

Sounds like an organization to legalize pot.
Going to your link about Captain America, it says something that an openly socialist writer such as Mark Milliar would be allowed to write the legacies of Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko. Throw in Brian Michael Bendis, Warren Ellis, Ed Brubaker and James Michael Strayszinski (sp), it doesn’t look good.
Isn’t this the same sort of garbage that killed Universal with Waterworld?? Or was that Tri-Star?? American’s are the #1 movie watching public world wide. Yet these people think that slapping us in the face will net them more dollars. Is there a soul out there that doesn’t know GI Joe equals the American Soldier?? Just another movie in a growing list I will not watch. – Lorica
Fact is the Libs .. the UN .. et all have no one near the effectiveness of the American Doggie, Jarheads, Squids, Airmen, or Coasties….. so they steal them.
They live in a fantasy land. A land of the “emotional truth” where they present what they want in their fantasies as the truth.
That said …. let them have their toys, we have the troops.
The reality is that in the movie industry international revenue overtook domestic revenue a couple years ago and the gap continues to widen. Welcome to capitalism in the global market.
When they all raise their arms in the air, fist clenched, and yell, “YO Joint Operating Entity!”
…Instead of Yo Joe!
It will never be the same.
I had the original, bearded, camo gun carrying GI Joe when I was a boy.
I wonder if this is a groomed, metro sexual, sparkle wearing hair dryer carrying version?
Of the moustached blue outfited flash-light carrying UN version?
Neil I was comparing people groups not Total global sales compared to US sales.
Comparing the buying power of 5 billion people to 220 million is just not realistic. If movie producers want to take an American Icon and turn it into some global PC thing, then I as an American am just not to interested in wasting my hard earned dollars over it. – Lorica
OK….
Look at all the military bashing movies that are coming out now like redacted, ect., ect., and I for one would not be upset if the terrorists just decided the blow up all the movie studios in this country, not kill any workers mind you, but blow the crap outta the facilites that they themselves find so offensive.

I wouldn’t mind then lets see how hollyweird would react when they had no facilities left in which to make their propaganda military bashing crappy movies.
They might as well just end his (and our) misery. Just call him “PC Joseph” and his destruction is compete.
I’ve still got my Tiny Tears doll and original Barbie in that sexy black dress with the ruffle on the bottom.
Can you imagine what the taliban would think of my Barbie in that sexy dress and hourglass figure.
Get your hands off my dolls. !!!!!
