Chris Christie to GOP: “Put up or shut up”

Posted by: ST on September 29, 2010 at 5:54 pm

As usual, the bold and unapologetic Governor of New Jersey hits the nail on the head (via Memeorandum):

“It’s put up or shut up time for the Republican party once we get the opportunity to govern again,” New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told reporters outside a GOP retreat on Wednesday in Washington. “If the voters do give us that opportunity in November on the federal level, it’s time for us to deliver. And it won’t be easy.”

Christie pulled off an upset victory last year over unpopular Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine. Since his election, he has drawn national attention for pushing budget cuts through a Democratic state legislature. He’s received enough praise that Christie’s name is now mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2012.

The enthusiastic reception Christie received at a House GOP Conference on Capitol Hill Wednesday won’t discourage that perception. After huddling with Republicans before they return to their home districts to campaign, Christie stayed for meetings with Republican officials. He said he advised Republicans running for office to “be yourselves.”

“People want to be treated like adults in America,” he told CNN. “They don’t want to be pandered to anymore. They know we’re in really hard times and they know there’s going to be sacrifices that are going to be necessary and we’ve got to tell them that.”

Isn’t that the truth? Gov. Christie knows that voter skepticism & cynicism isn’t the problem – he knows the real problems are the politicians who don’t take to heart the concerns of their respective constituencies. On the other hand, you’ve got Team O’Biden out there lecturing diehards to “quit whining” and telling them how it would be “irresponsible” for disgruntled Dems to stay home on Election Day. Why? Because, well, the economy’s “turned a corner” (‘just trust us’ – uh huh).

The contrasts in leadership couldn’t be more stark. One continuously displays strong character and courage, has sound judgment, and sugarcoats nothing. The other? Well, his disdain for both the truth and voters pretty much speaks for itself.

Can you imagine a presidential debate between the two? I don’t see Christie running for President in 2012, but if he did – and won the GOP nomination – the debates between him and Obama would be for the ages as the American people witnessed first hand what the difference is between empty rhetoric and sobering reality. It would indeed be a sight to behold.

  1. I sure hope they “put up” as Christie says – otherwise it’ll be the death knell of the GOP. If there was ever an opportunity to bring real hope and change, it’s now.

I can’t recall the context, but I once heard: “Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great. Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them.”

Obama’s beatification in 2008 was the know nothing, do nothing slackers’ time. NOW is the time for real Americans and patriots to stand up and not back down. Gov. Christie sets an example for people of principle to follow.

    NOW is the time!!!

    Revelation 6:8 (King James Version)

And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

I certainly hope the GOP does not squander this opportunity, but given the country club GOP wing’s inability to do anything but dither over which putter to use on the 12th hole, I give ‘em two years until they do something so stupid to lose the voter’s faith yet another time. There was no spine and no purpose to the GOP in the 2002-2006 era other than re-election and popularity. They acted in a fiscally irresponsible manner and the voters took notice. If the GOP manages to gain at least the house, I do hope they thoroughly deal with the Democrat corruption and force final, real reform. To see Nancy Pelosi perp-walked away from the speaker’s chair would be the most delightful outcome.

  4. Christie DID hit the nail on the head. He will be the first person to tell all of us that we very soon have to make a choice to either hold elected officials accountable or let them get away with wasting time and not addressing our nation’s problems. We can either:

    A) Continue to let politicians lie to us and have the Second Great Depression b/c we failed to elect leaders who are capable of making the hard choices about our mounting debt through excessive spending and unfunded entitlements – which will eventually cause China, Japan, and everyone else stops buying our debt b/c they realize we can’t pay them back or

    B) We elect people who guts and a long term vision who are willing to fall on their political sword because they know what is best for this country. Namely, we have some serious trimming to do whether the public really wants it or not; including: budget slashing, de-entitlements, higher taxes, and leaner, more efficient government. And that is just economic policy…

Letting the Bush tax cuts expire may be unfortunate during a down-turn

On the other hand, Gov. Christie reminds me a lot of President Obama.

Both men put out a fair amount of rhetoric about how their respective parties are what is best for America and what the American people want.

After 40 years of following politics I have yet to see where Republicans or Democrats have done much of anything that benefits America much less benefits the American people.

Slogans like, Contract with America, Hope and Change, Pledge to America or Guard the Change, those slogans simply give voters a warm fuzzy feeling that the American people are going to get something from the politicians.

But like the old saying goes, ‘truth is not what is true but rather truth is what is believed to be true’.

I Love Chris Christie….wake up teachers…..we are paying some our heath insurance, there isnt any reason why you cant. There is no free ride for you. If you know like it…get out of the job and allow a teacher that was to work have your job.

  7. Carlos says:

It’ll be easy for the Repubs to act responsibly between now and 2013, when everything they do will be subject to the death party’s veto, but what happens after, when a Republican is elected prez?

That’s when it’ll be important not to have a jackass lite like Bush in the WH, and when it’ll be important to have conservatives who don’t get drunk with new-found power, like they did after GW was elected. It cost them the WH, and it has quite possibly cost us our country.

  8. Kate says:

So true Carlos…the proof of the pudding is in the eating (my old English teacher used that a lot).

Republicans who want to retake control of Congress or even the WH need to realize that there are going to be hard choices to make. Both parties did nothing while government programs spent our money like it was water. Both parties are fully aware of the future insolvency of SS and Medicare programs if nothing is done. (I think that’s why they want Obamacare…then they will just ignore Medicare problems)

They will have to begin to treat the voters as if they had real brains in their heads for a change. Town Hall meetings are going to get very interesting as people begin to challenge the status quo of politics. Of course, we will also see how they carefully select attendees at those kinds of functions in order to dodge the hard questions.

    My advise to prospective campaigners:

    Rule # 1 – Don’t lie to us!
Rule # 2 – Deal with facts, not emotions.

    That’s about all we ask.

  9. CR says:

Governor Chris Christie is being lauded as a conservative–too bad he is not! Chris Christie’s partial fiscal conservatism does not make him a conservative. I say partial in part because he is not going far enough in cutting the fat and he is using sixty five billion dollars of the states “cap and trade” scheme [Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative] to balance the budget. Chris Christie said of 2011, “Next year, we plan on getting back to RGGI.” Carbon is not a poison–its a scam–”cap and trade” is Soviet style communism! Chris Christie is no conservative–no true conservative would be a supporter of “cap and trade”–if he were a conservative he would be doing away with the state’s “cap and trade” scheme to steal tax dollars away from the NJ state residents. Chris Christie also supports the progressives [communists] Mike Castle and Meg Whitman. Chris Christie is also like the above two communists he supports, no true supporter of the second amendment–Chris Christie is a progressive communist.

  10. Jo says:

I have not studied Christie’s stands and policies enough to know, CR and maybe you are right. But I sure like the way he is taking on the teacher’s unions. When will this country realize it is the over-bloated pensions, golden parachutes and cushy insurance of the unions and government employees that are breaking this nation? When will someone come along who cuts these people down to size and cleans up the public, government-run ‘education’ (indoctrination) machine???

  11. MarkJ says:

Proposed Chris Christie for Prez Campaign slogans in 2012:

“Chris Christie: The One New Jerseyan Who Terrifies Tony Soprano.”

“Christie For President…You Got a Problem With That?”

“Vote For Christie, Or He Will Crush You Into Little Tiny Pieces.”

    “Christie For President, Fuhgeddabowdit.”
