The Panthers at the Cardinals – and other sports news (UPDATE: PANTHERS WIN 25-10)

Game time isn’t until 4:05 ET, but I’m getting ready to head out for a bit and am not sure I’ll be back in time to start a thread prior to kickoff. Plus, I wanted to give ya’ll a thread to talk about how your favorite teams are doing today, too.

You’ve probably already heard the news about Panthers QB Jake Delhomme opting to have surgery on his injured right elbow, which means he’s out for the season. 2nd string QB David Carr suffered a back injury in last Sunday’s game, and didn’t practice Wednesday, but did return to practice Friday. He is listed as “probable” for today. The Cats last week signed 43 year-old Vinny Testaverde, which has resulted in quite a bit of ribbing from the local and national sports media alike. Interestingly enough, St. Louis also placed a call to Testaverde, but as NFL.com reported in the preview link, he didn’t want to move that far away from New York.

So today in St. Louis, it’s going to be a battle of the backup QBs between these 3-2 teams.

In other sports news, how about that Indians/BoSox game last night? I was worried after game 1 that this wouldn’t be much of a series, but last night proved me wrong.

In NASCAR news, Jeff Gordon is closer to winning his 5th Nextel Cup, as he took the checkered flag at last night’s BOA 500 race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Audrey Hudson reports that, contrary to Democrat Homeland Security Chair Bennie Thompson’s request that House staffers (on a “fact-finding mission) should to be immunized against “communicable diseases” before attending the race, fans filled the speedway this weekend, apparently not sharing Thompson’s silly viewpoint.

No disease outbreaks were reported.

Update: Testaverde started, and his years and wisdom at the QB position paid off, as he helped the Panthers go to 4-2 with a 25-10 victory over the Cards.

And in the battle of unbeaten teams, the Patriots are leading the Cowboys 38-27 with about 4 minutes left.
