Pundits, politicos, and bloggers are all buzzing about the French presidential election on Sunday which saw Nicolas Sarkozy, the conservative Frenchman, handily defeat his Socialist opponent SΓΒ©golΓΒ¨ne Royal. Sarko will be handed the reigns of power in about a week. Still up in the air: Whether or not Sarko will have a conservative government alongside him to help him in his plans to reform France. Those elections will be held in early June.
By 5 pm French time, the turn out was 75%.
I wrote back in November 2005 that a “French connection” friend of mine told me to keep my eye on French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy – that Sarko was the ‘man to watch’ whenever the French elections rolled around. Looks like my source was right on, because Sarko is the favorite to win this Sunday’s election in France.
The Times Online reports today the desperate measures that France’s Socialist candidate for president SΓΒ©golΓΒ¨ne Royal is pulling out all the stops in order to defeat the conservative Nicolas Sarkozy. The type of demonization taking place is something Democrats here who have done similarly would be proud of (emphasis added):
