I wanted to blog a bit this morning about the President’s reversal in position on Sen. John McCain’s call for a law banning ‘torture’ to foreign suspects in the war on terror but John Hawkins’ post on the subject pretty much sums up my feelings on this switch in position by the President. John writes:
I don’t really think anything I write would do the following photos (from a pro-Tookie Williams vigil on Dec. 12) justice. Methinks they speak for themselves.
This will make him even more unpopular with the usual suspects but then again it’s not about doing what’s popular – it’s about doing the right thing, which I think the Governor did.
Looks like it’s in Arnie’s hands now, as the California Supreme court refused to grant a stay of execution late yesterday to the quadruple murderer. Four courts have upheld his convictions, including the notoriously oddball 9th Circuit. If the Governor doesn’t grant Tookie clemency, Tookie will be executed early Tuesday.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad supporter and former University of South Florida computer science professor Sami Al-Arian was acquitted today on eight terror-related charges. The jury deadlocked on some other charges, but it remains to be seen whether or not they will be retried.
